There's been a few rumors in the last week saying he may be interested in doing the 3rd Anthology film. I'm not real familiar with him so I wouldn't know what to expect but I do plan on seeing JW soon.

Well if he does well in TFA, there maybe a opening in the future.

Really, as many of you have noted, it's going to depend on the fan reaction...that'll make or break a movies future. It honestly doesn't matter at this point how great Disney thinks their movie is (they always do), it's going to depend on how "fantastic" the fan reaction is, as it will make or break Abrams credibility in making a SW movie.

If this movie blows the doors off the proverbial bank, then JJ will likely be at the top of the list. SW fans are hard to please, and we'll see how they/we respond, IMHO.

Are you on the inside, or are these published rumors?

Right. I did see this when it first came out. I figured this is more of a "possibility" vs. a rumor, but it seems like he could be in the running for 9 or the 3rd anthology film. Either way I'd be happy.

I really don't see him directing 9. Maybe the 3rd anthology, as there will probably be some stylistic differences between those and the main episodes, but I really don't see him having the chops (yet) to tackle the finale of the ST. JW was a pretty great flick, but stylistically he basically just copied a lot from Spielberg; not a bad thing, considering this was his first big budget production, but I don't think he's proven himself enough to helm something this big.

JJ returning would be my bet; he was also a Spielberg imitator for a while, but he's obviously gotten quite a bit of experience behind the camera since he began.

Right, I do agree with everything you're saying.

In the same light, Rian Johnson, as talented as he is, has only done a few films before this... and notably only one remotely similar to Star Wars genre wise (LOOPER).

He is a Breaking Bad veteran, but still, he's the same age and only a little more experience than Colin. On top of that, Colin will have two other movies done, one with Frank Marshall, Kathy Kennedy's husband, by the time he would be up for a Star Wars film. He's in the right circles to make it happen.

I'd guess he'll direct Episode X, whenever that might happen. That'll give him time to do a couple of non Star Wars projects before returning. That's if TFA's a hit with the fans, and if he's happy with whatever state the franchise is in by the time the 4th trilogy comes along. I doubt he'll do one of the Anthology films.
