It's NOT a big deal to me . . . . I don't care about the 3D, although I will see it at the theaters in 3D at least once.

I personally don't give a rat's ass about 3D films as they stand at the moment. So far, the only film I've seen in 3D that impressed me was Avatar, and I'm not entirely certain that the film was meant to be as 3D as it was - it was on a very odd TV that seemed to play everything back in 3D and slightly too fast. Either way, it was pretty cool.

But it just annoys me when the cinemas say, "hey, why not pay £3 extra (plus £1.50 for your glasses, and no, you can't just bring your own from last time) and watch the movie in 3D?" Then it turns out that there's all of about three minutes in 3D out of the entire 120 minute movie, and you end up feeling completely ripped off! I mean, come on - Disney will be spending millions on CGI for TFA anyway, so why can't they splash out and buy a 3D camera and film the whole thing in 3D? And that way they'll have (if they haven't already) a camera to film all the other movies on in full 3D. It just seems a bit odd to me.

You won't be alone, but definitely in the minority. 3D can be used to create greater immersion. More often than not though, it's a tacked on cash grab.

    DO NOT WANT.

I also feel the effect actually hurts a film, because you might get 2 or 3 scenes that work well with 3D, but the smaller, more intimate scenes wind up looking washed out. Also, for many moviegoers, the effect is still headache-inducing past an hour or so. Most importantly, keep in mind, the ST is supposed to remind everyone of what made Star Wars great. And it ain't 3D.

Film does not equal converted 3D. Converted 3D occurs when you shoot in 2D and then add 3D in post. There are both film and digital 3d cameras.

I don't know if JJ is shooting 3d native or converted, but honestly converted gets a bad rap because its generally done on the cheap as a ploy to get more money. But there have been plenty of post-converted 3d movies that have looked fantastic (see the recent post conversions on Jurassic Park or the Lion King). I would guess, if they convert this for 3D jj will take the time to go the frame by frame conversion route as opposed to the cheaper way of just tacking on 3d conversion to boost the ticket price.

I do not like wearing those silly glasses when attending a three-dimensional movie presentation. A red lens and a blue lens surely strain my hobbit eyes. If I were an elf like my friend Legolas if the Woodland Realm, this may not be the case.

Okay, so this is a thing with you... your schtick. I admire how vested you are, though the humor doesn't really come through... for me anyway, but I'm not the biggest LOTR fan. Oh right, that's why I'm on a Star Wars messageboard.
    ;)

    Love ya Frodo.

I don't get 3D films at all. I walk out of the cinema feeling like I've been beaten around the head with a brick.
I think movies benefit from being 3D as much as Orwell would benefit from Nineteen Eighty-Four: The Pop Up Book edition...

If your film lives or dies because of 3D, you might have made a videogame instead of a film.

I am sorry Willybobo, this the way I speak. I mean no disrepect but if you do not like it then ignore my posts. I enjoy reading your posts sir.
    -Frodo

I did not appreciate the verbal content in this video. I do understand the humor though. i enjoy both Star Wars and Lord of the Rings although I am in LotR. Sorry to offend anyone because of my Hobbit dialect. I get it but this is the last post here. I do not feel welcome due to my belonging to another universe. Farewell.

 That's a little melodramatic, considering my post was meant as a joke, but hey, you're entitled to your opinions. I wish you well, friend, whatever you choose to do from here on out. May the Force be with you.

Has there been any confirmation that it will be released in 3D? Hopefully not. If they want to keep the aesthetic of the OT, they should avoid it as the original films were obviously not in 3D. I am a fan of IMAX though.

No worries, Frodo. I enjoy your posts as well, but I will say, it took me a second to understand that you weren't trolling in any way. You just want to channel your love of Star Wars by way of Frodo. That's cool bud.

Hell, I have a Simpsons character avatar, yet I post about Star Wars all day. It's all good. Come on back, Frodo!

2D is the best! 3D is just bantha poodoo. When I watched Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland 3D, it was just awfull, the glasses were not big enough to cover the whole screen!

But I would watch Star Wars in 3D after I watched it in 2D that just has to be amazing.

3D is a gimmick. Always has been, always will be. It died in the 80's and it is slowly dying today.

I agree NYR_Steve. There seems to be less movies doing 3D these days. At first it was cool to see the new technology but that has faded and it really doesn't make the movie going experience any better (some could argue it makes it worse) plus it's not worth the extra money.

I think JJ going old school with film and mixing in just enough of the newer technology (ie CGI and mo-cap will make this movie the perfect blend of the old school and new school fans

The first, and to this day the most memorable 3D exp. I had was Avatar.
I like the look of those movies if they're built from ground up to accommodate
for the medium. However no movie since Avatar was able to recapture the
    same magic.

Phantom Menace 3D was a futile conversion. It didn't enhance the film in any way.
It only proved once again the great cinema is about story first, and visuals second.

I'm absolutely thrilled SW is shot on film for historical reasons. With ep. VII
success younger film makers will hopefully rediscover this wonderful medium
and we the viewers will have more choices in cinematic experience.

As a photographer and graphic designer I worked for years with digital tools but
have a background in traditional film medium as well. Both have their advantages.

Digital cameras are easier to implement and it's nice to see/output the results
on a monitor or print instantly!

Film on the other hand produces a softer, more natural looking images and all the
tiny imperfections of exposure process only add a rich quality to them.

Yes, you are the only one. 3D sucks. Shooting on film is a way of preserving the tradition of the OT and film as a medium. JJ Abrams is in an exceptional league of Directors that still use film. Shooting a film in 3D is only a way of trying to squeeze out a few more bucks. A franchise like Star Wars should never result to filming with digital 3D cameras.

3D is dead just like the radio.
