Didn't Avatar use newly designed 3D cameras built by James Cameron? IIRC, there was a 60 minutes segment that described how he innovated the industry through their design. However, I believe that he holds the patent rights to the technology, so other film makers have to pay to use his tech. I believe that this is why Avatar looked amazing, but other 3D movies lack that quality. Does anyone else know if other movies have used Cameron's technology?

I am not sure about all of this, since I am not tech savvy, so someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I actually dislike 3D pretty much across the board. Any film that has been marketed as a "3D film" seemed to concentrate on that aspect and did not shine in any other way. Any scenes in a regular movie shot in 3D added nothing for me at all. As someone above posted, its story first and visuals second - always.

I love film, and I'm delighted that JJA (or someone above him) has decided to go "old school".

Advancing digital technology was cool, but in no way, shape, or form did the use of digital cameras make the PT more enjoyable. And I personally find 3D films to be annoying in general.

I love that JJ is shooting in film and also with IMAX cameras ( I don't believe that he only shot one sequence in the whole movie with that format like that article said a couple of weeks ago)

I honestly hope TFA will have a huge, historic box office success and its 3D version to BOMB in order to steer away the industry from this useless soulless gimmick that is 3D.

Wait are they actually going to show TFA in 3D?? This is a PROBLEM. Don't even convert it to 3D. If they have showing of TFA in 3D I will be upset. A truly great movie doesn't need 3D tickets to be the highest grossing at the box office

they did awful 3d conversions of all Marvel movies. I suppose they will think it's actually a good idea.

No, as of now, there is no evidence that it will have a 3D version.

    Edit: sigh, not true: http://www.slashfilm.com/star-wars-episode-vii-will-be-released-december-18-2015/

First, JC did set up many new & ground breaking film/DV/3D technology & advanced the film industry with Avatar(2009). Avatar also became the HIGHEST grossing motion picture too. ;)
Cameron also said no 3D/digital 3D-IMAX film should be longer than 2hr, 120min. I saw Avatar in a 3D/IMAX format.
It was fantastic, :) . I was very impressed with the film & understood what Cameron meant.

I also read that in 2013, JJ Abrams said he wanted TFA to have a gritty, 1970s era western feel. He didn't want to use the new 3D or IMAX or the high tech FPM method(like Peter Jackson used in the Hobbit films).
Walt Disney pushed for IMAX & 3D so Bad Robot finally agreed but JJ wanted to return to the Star Wars(1977) feel.

I would see the IMAX 3D version of TFA but I wouldn't expect a 2D/standard format to be a big problem.
Id of done digital video from the beginning. Film as a medium isn't that great. Every year 100s of Hollywood movies are lost permanently due to deteration or wear. :(
Digital formats can be later edited or modified(for TV, airlines, cable, home entertainment, VOD, etc).
Film may seem "old school cool" or "hipster"(like the big LP craze in the US) but digital video/production is the future.
    Like it or not.

I'd add that Keanu Reeves did a great documentary about the new formats & the modern film industry. It's on Netflix.com & IMdb.com

I saw The Phantom Menace in 3D... Even in 3D, Jake Lloyd was in 2D.

Wow. I want to keep up but I refuse to google that preposterous alien name.

Was Lucas the worst namer of things ever? Man... so much of it feels like he phoned it in. Scary.

There are lines of nail polish and wall paints that have better names than what we've been given in Star Wars over the years.

Hopefully JJ and co. give us interesting characters with less cringeworthy names.

    You are so right.

Jedi master Eeth Koth, Nute Gunray and extra Bick Mcfallamum all agree

It's like Lucas just needed to win in a game of Scrabble with Spielberg so he just mashed up any old vowels and syllables.

Yes, this is yet another aspect of GL's utter failure. The names are HORRENDOUSLY stupid. Thank you for pointing that out, it needed to be said.
