Anyone else tuning in to the Amazon Originals adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American Gods?

Having only re-read the novel again about 4/5months ago, the opening episode was completely on-point in how faithfully it's been translated to the screen.

I'm already sold on Ian McShane's Mr Wednesday and Pablo Schreiber's Mad Sweeney (despite how little screentime he gets in Episode 1), but while he did a good job with what he had to play with I'm not wholly into Ricky Whittle's Shadow yet... but it's only one episode in, so early, early days.

The production design is damned impressive - the Crocodile Bar was just how I imagined it in my head - and it's fair to say they're pulling no punches in the adaptation, particularly in the language and amazingly OTT bloodiness of the opening scenes.

My wife's already waved the white flag and pretty much capitulated after The Bone Orchard, but I'm keen to see what they're going to do with other characters and how well they stick to the story.

I thought the episode was on point too, the final scene - presumably Lora kicking butt - was 'whoa, you just went there' type of scene. I should have expected it from Fuller. I liked Ricky Whittle more than I thought I would, because that was not how I imagined Shadow. They also said that they would make him more active character than he was in the book. McShane was brilliant, I laughed out loud at his "Give me time" (to be an Peedunky) line. I liked the look of it a lot, especially what they did with Technical Boy - better than I imagined him.

I was really apprehensive, because American Gods is in my top three favorite books ever. I think I might enjoy the second episode even more, because now I know they aren't destroying it.

Plus points for featuring Mark Lanegan in the score during Laura's funeral scene too - I love that guy's voice and it was entirely fitting for the visuals.

    Amen to that ;)

Woah! I've just finished watching the first episode and I'm mad about this show just as I'm about the novel!

Me It was the Technical Boy scene, just like in my head!

Totally, Mad Sweeny is wonderful and Low-Key is great too!

Moreover, I've watched the French version of the episode and their French voices are just awesome!

Cant't wait episode 2 with perhaps Mr. World! :D

I feel that I interpreted American Gods in a different manner than most people and I think that as soon as I saw the opening theme when it was released I realized that. That said, viewing American Gods through that interpretation it flows beautifully. I don't think we'll get to my favorite character this season (Whiskey Jack) but in regards to the performance of the actors I couldn't be happier. For some reason when I first pictured Mr. Wednesday he was a white haired older Tom Selleck but he has been supplanted by Ian McShane. The Technical Boy was perfect and I'm amazed they pulled off Bilquis so effectively as well

I know what you mean... it's one of the things I always find with novels adapted for the screen - whatever you see in your mind's eye tends to get reformatted to be or closer resemble the screen version.

For what it's worth, Mr Wednesday always looked a bit like John Hurt in Hellboy in my head:

Episode 2? Orlando Jones killed it, killed it, as did Peter Stormare (Czernobog or Black God/God of Darkness for uninitiated) and Ricky in that checkers scene. Gillian Anderson as Media? By the Force, could this casting get any better? And how beautifully shot this is, amazing.

And I can't wait for the non-readers to realize who rained punishment and bloodbath on Technical Boy's drones in the first episode.

Well that was a great opening episode the performances were top notch & I loved the visuals.
As I haven't read the books I have a question are the various gods split into two sides our are they just out for themselves.
Tech no boy sure is a nasty pice of work thankful some one who I gues is another god save Shadows ass & isn't Mr Wednesday simply the worst passenger to be pit next too if you hate flying

It's Old Gods vs. New Gods (media, technology, etc.) and you'll learn what some of them want.

It will happen, don't worry. The biggest 'new' god hasn't even appeared yet - the one who leads them, like Wednesday leads the old. :)

Oh I know. But I love me some Gillian. She's aged impeccably well and still a total babeasaurus rex.
