I reckon the good question here would be: ""What is in a Jedi?" lol. Well, I agree that maybe full-fledged Jedi might not be scattered around the galaxy hidden from the First Order; but maybe apprentices, padawans or younglings that were on the way or were able to escape the Massacre. I daresay there might be around individuals like in the "Rebels" series: not completely trained Jedi, but Padawan or Force-Sensitive people - not as developed in the Force as Rey - but hiding out there.

If we think about it, first when the OT and then the PT were released, we thought that after Order 66 all the Jedi were wiped away from the galaxy and none other than Yoda and Obi-Wan were lingering around. However, this preconception was changed with "Star Wars Rebels" when we found out a Padawan (Caleb Dume) survived but hid his true nature by changing his name (Kanan Jarrus). But then, he found a Force-Sensitive teenager - Ezra Bridger - and he is acting as his mentor during the early stages of the Rebellion against the Empire. And we also know of Ahsoka, who left the Jedi but it's FS. So if the question is: Are there any Force-Sensitive, either not-trained or partially-trained in the Ways of the Jedi? I think so.

The other thing I insist is that we don't know yet the way Luke was carrying his Jedi Academy: was it an isolated entity like the former, where the apprentices were to leave their homeworlds and stay in the Academy with no attachments? Or would it be more like a galaxy Hogwarts, where apprentices would learn the ways of the Jedi but would be in and out like a boarding school? If the latter is true chances are there might be more pupils out there that were out of the Academy by the time Ben went nuts. Just mere speculation from my side, but I keep wondering.

I always thought that Jedi was a job, rather than a title. Like galactic policemen in the service of the Republic. I don't think a self-employed Force user could be called a Jedi. The thing in TFA seems to be that those strong in the Force are not willing to stick their necks out as employees in the service of the New Republic unless Grand Master Luke is back to lead that army/police corps. No one wants to lose their agency unless they have a commanding officer they have faith in.

The Jedi BECAME a job that they did not anticipate which is why padawans became bosses of clones and such and theFS's in The NR aren't scared to stick their necks out rather that LUKE SKYWALKER told them not to .

As for any jedi surviving order 66, they would all be in their eighties or nineties at best

Where I don't think it's likely any did, age would also depend on the life-expectancy of the species too. :)

Good point. I could actually see them using a 200 year-old jedi, perhaps in the next trilogy. That being said, wouldn't he or she be at least on par with Luke by now? But I agree. I think Luke is the last.

If there are more Jedi in hiding the opening crawl lied to me. It literally told us that Luke Skywalker is the Last Jedi. So, no, there are no more Jedi left, only Luke. They would create an immediate inconsistancy in their own story material by suddenly including for no apparent reason another Jedi or group of Jedi who also happened to survive the new purge. If there are any Jedi left, they are in the Knights of Ren now with Kylo: that I can imagine.

    Yoda in ROJ to Luke:

"When gone am I, the last of the Jedi you will be"

    TFA prologue:

    "In his absence,
the sinister FIRST ORDER has risen from the
ashes of the Empire and will not rest until
Skywalker, the last Jedi, has been destroyed."

Technically both ROJ and TFA say the same, but Dave Filoni is busy circumventing the issue by having Jedi like Ashoka Tano simply drop her "being a Jedi".

In the worst case, IMHO, we end up with what Yoda and the TFA prologue said was true, but only from a certain point of view.

(please feel free to add your "NOOOOOO"s to mine) ;-)

Well Luke only became the last Jedi in Return of the Jedi. There could have been other Jedi around the time of Empire Strikes Back and A New Hope. "The jedi are all but extinct". But TFA begins with Luke being the Last Jedi. There's the difference. But if he trains Rey, there will be two Jedi. Quite a problem for mister Snoke.

I hope there is some other Jedi hiding, I missed some serious male Jedi that I could identify, beacause Rey is a girl and Finn is rather a funny character:)
    Ps: sorry for my English:)

I feel that your bullet points are 100% valid, with what we know after seeing TFA. Rey's ability in using The Force seems to be increasing exponentially and her narrow but decisive defeat of Kylo certainly does show that she poses a threat to Snoke and Kylo. Along with that Snoke seems quite concerned about Luke. If he fears Master Skywalker he's good at hiding it, but the possibility is there. Finally, I am guessing there are others who can aid Rey and Luke, non-Jedi and potential Jedi alike. "Potential" is a key word here because we know that as of the events of TFA, Luke is most definitely the last Jedi. However, zealous Dark-Siders killing off all of the Jedi does not mean that no more Force-sensitives will be born. So long as there is at least one Jedi to teach others, there is hope!

Didn't Kanan become a legitimate Jedi Knight at the temple in the "Shroud of Darkness" episode? I haven't watched the episode yet, I've only read the review so maybe I'm wrong about that.

I think it's safe to say it's both. The Jedi Order is monastic and the Jedi have the job of keeping peace through the galaxy but they are also conferred titles as they reach milestones in their training. So within the Order a Padawan is not yet considered a Jedi. If they leave the Order at any point the Order no longer considers them Jedi even though the galaxy at large will still call them a Jedi. Gray Jedi, Jedi exile, and Dark Jedi are no longer members of the Order so they aren't official Jedi, but they're still called Jedi. Make sense?
