For me a "battle scene" is large scale.
Many moving parts. If it's too intimate, idk if I'd call it a battle scene.
The Throne Room, for all it's glory, is not a "battle scene" to me. It's a fight.

    Scarif, is a battle scene.
    Hoth is a battle scene.
    Yavin is a battle scene.
Crait is a battle scene. Though with a lot less battle than you'd think.

This. All (physical and non-metaphorical) battles are fights, but not all fights are battles. There are duels and, somewhere in the in between, skirmishes (like the aforementioned TIE attack). This is why I'm unsure about Road Warrior. I agree with calling the Fury Road chase a battle because while one side had relatively few actors, the other side had a large amount of materiel and manpower, and the scale of the fight as presented was quite large. The tanker chase, while similar in foundation, feels smaller and more intimate, which is why I'm unsure if I would refer to it as a battle exactly.

Which leads to another question: when does a chase qualify as a battle? A chase could be said to be a duel of sorts, but it's not a traditional fight most of the time. I wouldn't call the car chase in Raiders to be a fight (at least not until Indy gets onto the truck) because they are largely out of contact with one another. One group is trying to get away from the other, and there is not much exchange of fire. However both the Road Warrior and Fury Road Chases have clear attacking and defending aspects. While the main goal is still to get away, there is more contact and more retaliation. So you can call it a fight. But when does it become a battle?

The German production of Stalingrad in 1993 was a crazy war movie. I find war movies made by pacifists are the most realistic. It gives you a German perspective on the Eastern front. It's crazy AF!!

Yeah it's a wild movie. Eastern front was hell. One thing I find interresting is that there was a German General named Hoth. So I guess that is where Lucas got the name from.

That being said: For those looking for a movie that accurately depicts the events of and leading up to December 7th, 1941, I highly recommend the movie "Tora! Tora! Tora!".

And unlike the Michael Bay film, 100% of the film's visual effects were practical, using real models, vehicles, and even actual aircraft. In one particularly infamous scene from the film, a P-40 that tries to scramble off of the airfield makes a hard turn into parked aircraft. This was not scripted, and the people seen running in the sequence were legitimately running for their lives.

Thankfully, no one was harmed (with the exception of those poor P-40 Warhawks :(), and it wound up creating of the most memorable scenes from the film.

If you're a fan of war movies and haven't seen this movie yet, this is a must watch.

Both the Battle of the Bastards and Hardhome in Game of Thrones are tops for me. Each one really makes you feel like you are following around each character. What HBO has been able to do with redefining battle scenes in television is incredible.

This thread has slipped too far out of sight... so, I submit another contender from 1995's Heat.

When I first saw this scene in the theatre over 20yrs ago, it felt like the most insane battle scene I'd ever witnessed in film. Obviously things move on, but it's still a piece of classic cinema.

Fun fact- they eventually gave the movie the alternate title of "Live, Die, Repeat" after its theatrical run because people (like my dad) kept calling the movie by its subtitle and a lot didn't know what Edge of Tomorrow even was.

Oh, we can't forget The Man Who Saves the World, also known as "Turkish Star Wars" because they straight up stole scenes from A New Hope for special effects. As in literally, near the end of this clip, the Millennium Falcon can clearly and blatantly be seen flying around. Classic film.

Best battle scene in a movie?

Easily Rogue One for me, hands down. No contest. Not even close.
