    If you look at the floor reflections, its pretty clear the floor is flat up to the rising steps. Definitely kneeling.

    I like this theory, but I think canon material already established that one need not sit in a device to project their hologram. They were using hand-held holoprojectors during the Prequel era.

    It could be Vader reporting to The Emperor whilst he is in his steam bath. Palp's does have that skin condition.

    they could have shot this for the trailer. In the film they will just have Vader walking up.

    Like the marketing they did with Kylo Ren in the first trialer

    I like that one! From the proportion, that cloaked person looks taller than average, which would match with Forest’s 6’2” / 220 lb. frame. Also, looking more closely, the disproportionateness of the shoulders and how the cloak falls becomes quite obvious.

    It would be kinda cool to have some neutral working for both sides, or even a traitor amongst the rebels reporting to a somebody/something guarded by royal guards.

    So on the other hand, it could also be somebody like Jyn Erso herself.

    Before coming to this thread I was completely stumped on who this would be... I don't feel like it's Vader purely because of the hood.

    If it's Forest' character then that'd be amazing. I'd love to see him working for the Empire but betraying them, working with the Rebels, and then being mowed down by Vader! (dark)

    His character is limping and has a staff type thing and it looks like the cloaked figure can kneel ok and it's more smooth, so I don't think it's him.

    I'm going to assume that Vader is in the bacta tank recovering from a recent battle.

    And like some have already mentioned, the royal guards were the personal guards of the Emperor, so I would say that Palpatine is the hooded figure.

    It could really be as simple as that.

    As for why Palpatine is kneeling. I'm going to assume he dropped his Sith contact lenses and went down to pick them up.
