I think if there is a movie to do it I agree it would be Avatar 2 but not its sequels all because of the hype around the technology aspect of it with the difference for Star Wars being he hype around the characters that will sell it .

Will Episode VIII be a bigger success at the box office than TFA?

One could argue yes, because TFA was successful at bringing old and new fans alike back to the franchise, and left us with a cliff hanger that everyone is dying to see get played out.

    or

No, TFA was a movie event of a generation. The pent up anticipation of seeing all our favourite 'original trilogy' heroes in a new saga will be impossible to duplicate.

    Thoughts?

well you know it is not predictable. Will it earn a lot of money yes? Will it defeat TFA at the Box Office openingsweekend? Will it gross more than TFA in total? Who knows. The tricky part is it is the sequel to a movie that was, like you said, THE event of a generation. That said, in this movie we still have Leia and Luke and people will want to see them just like in TFA, but they will also would like to see the new characters and what happens next.

I think the key here is also marketing. If done correctly they could build up (almost) the same hype as with TFA.

    It could go both ways.

I think it will be just as successful as TFA, they tried the grossing mission & it didn't beat Avatar I think it will more about closing a chapter in this franchise & give closure on fan favorite characters existence.

I could see it going either way actually. On the one hand, TFA had a rather unique set of factors that all came together to build hype and ensure it made TONS of money. I could potentially see this movie doing really well also, but not quite as well, simply because those factors aren't all there anymore.

On the other hand, massive success of TFA might actually make Episode VIII MORE successful since now most people will want to see the sequel. And if RO is also good, then Disney will have to momentum of having two really good SW movies back to back going for them as well.

And if they market Episode VIII effectively (like they did with TFA), and early buzz is also positive, then it could be even more ridiculously successful than the first one.

    We shall see.

While it will be the #1 movie of 2017 and hold the Christmas Holidays hostage against any competition, I think it will fall short of TFA.

Don't discount the appeal to average filmgoer that Harrison Ford has. I think TFA had the perfect combination of:

    -Great reviews
-Its better then the PT word of mouth
    - Han Solo and the OT characters are back on screen again.

Just remember that order of gross of each Trilogy:

    1. SW
    2. ROTJ
    3. ESB

    1. TPM
    2. ROTS
    3. AOTC

Unlikely, but possible. The hype wont be as big as TFA's, but if the movie is really good and if it suceeds in China, and the dollar/euro rate is also favorable, than maybe. But keep in mind that TFA's financial success is enormous. 107 million tickets (so far) sold in the US... There hasnt been such success since Titanic.

Another thing that VIII potentially has in it's favor is, Luke Skywalker. Luke was completely absent from the marketing for TFA for, obvious reasons. But if they make him a key part of the marketing for this film, and basically go "yes, Luke is back and he's going to be an important part of this film," then that should also get people quite excited.

I agree. If they marketing campaign for this movie shows Luke in action at any point, you can bet your butt that we could potentially see the fans come in droves to see this film to watch him back in action again fighting alongside Rey and whoever else may join their adventure against the First Order. I can't wait to see what the public response is. How they pitch Luke over the course of the next year and three quarters will determine how many people come out to see Episode VIII. I believe that due to the pouring out of support towards Episode VII and the fact that the story has been proven to bring back fans of new and old, we can expect just as many fans for this one. Who doesn't grow up with the story of Luke Skywalker and not want to see him fighting in over 30 years? I mean, seriously!!!

It'll do very well for itself but to think it'll top TFA...I don't think so.

Rogue One will make VIII the third Star Wars movie in a row. What effect does that have? Does its position in the timeline confuse the general audience? Stuff like that.

I cant help but think that EP 7 only increased the number of SW fans out there. The interesting question is will EP 8 produce the number of repeat / multiple ticket purchases. So many seem to have seen EP 7 more than once.

I think if any have a chance to beat out ep 7 it would be 9 and not 8. I think 7 was just crazy the build up and anticipation was there and brought so many more people in to watch the movie. I think more people will wait for home release for 8, since there is Rogue One in between, those casual movie goers will feel like Disney is trying to cash grab and not go to 8 because of it. WE ALL WILL GO MULTIPLE TIMES so the movie will still be HUGE!!! I think that people will be more inclined, especially knowing it's a trilogy, to go watch 9 in theaters more than 8.

I still think it would be hard for either 8 or 9 to reach the numbers that 7 did, but if either are able, I would bet my credits on 9!

No, it will not top TFA at the box office.
I guess many people are not pleased with the outcome and will skip VIII and IX.
Now they know what they get served so to speak.
My theory is it could only surpass TFA at the box office if the trailers for VIII would be a greater as great and very promissing. (Luke fighting bad guys)
Realistic viewed, Rogue One will hit the cinemas this december and VIII next year.
Maybe the casual cinemagoer is saturated in 2017 after VII and R1. (or vice versa - hungry for more movies, but I consider this as unrealistic)
There will be no real financial flop at the box office, but there could be a possible financial decline with every new entry in the series.
Nonetheless Disney will make profit, no doubt.

    This must be considered too.
I guess it will decline, it will be hard for them to build up the hype like this again.
The direction for the ST is set, the secret is exposed.
New fans are joining and some old fans thinking about skipping the rest of the ST.
It will be interesting, but in the end it does not matter, the ST will become a financial success.
Which movie makes the most profit is not important, because Disney already hit the Jackpot with the purchase of the Star Wars license.

It shouldn't if the marketing specifies the between-ROTS-and-ANH but then again, Disney is avoiding The PT...

Disney is going to make it clear that RO is a separate thing, and it wouldn't be hard to do that at all.
