SERIOUS SPOILER WARNING FOR ANYBODY WHO HAS NOT SEEN EPISODE VII - DO NOT CONTINUE READING

I always loved Chewie and thought he was great in TFA. Does anybody have an idea what his role will be going forward? I'd love to hear your thoughts on the following questions and anything else you can come up with.

    * The life debt to Han is obviously over, or is it not? Could part of his culture require him to avenge Han's death by going after Kylo or protect Han's next of kin?

    * Is Chewie now the Falcon's rightful owner?

    * Chewie always seemed to be good-hearted and less profit-oriented compared with Han (remember his displeasure when Han didn't want to join the battle in Episode IV). Do you expect him to completely abandon any smuggling operations and dedicate his life to the Resistance? Or will he even return to Kashyyyk?

    * If he remains with the Resistance, would it make more sense from his perspective to stay on Leia's side (an intimidating bodyguard if there ever was one) or to stay with the guys he just met?

    * Didn't Chewie fly with Rey to Luke's hiding place? Why would he remain in the Falcon instead of meeting his old friend? Do you think this was just for the movie's sake (Chewie would have 'photobombed' the finale with Rey and Luke), or could there be character-driven motives?

    I appreciate anybody's thoughts!

He flew with Rey to Luke´s secret island. I guess he will stay with the Resistance. I think he´s the rightful owner of Falcon after Han´s death.

Yeah, he's with Rey right now and I think he'll pretty much be Rey's sidekick and guardian while her and Luke train. Artoo is there too which is neat

Chewie may want to kill Kylo in revenge, but Rey, Luke and Leia will probably want to keep him alive.

Remember that walking carpet is over 200 years old and was around the "a more civilized age" and also participated in the clone wars.
Being said, Chewi's smart enough to know only a Jedi can defeat Kylo Ren.

Chewi's going to stand by and protect Rey until she's strong enough to defeat Ren...that's will be his revenge for Han's death

I think Chewie will be with Rey, Luke and R2 at least for a time in VIII until (I hope) Rey keeps her promise and returns to Finn. Note also that when the Falcon gets back to the rebel base, rather than greeting Leia, Chewie makes sure that Finn is OK - showing that he must in a short time via Han have made a bond with that character too. It will have helped that Rey and Finn both took on Kylo Ren, Han's killer. He is a loyal creature, and respects loyalty in others (witness his anger with Lando when he betrayed the crew to Vader).

I feel that Rey with Chewbacca works well as a dynamic. Like the last poster said, if revenge is his aim then sticking with Rey works too.

Have to say, Chewie was fantastic in TFA, both in terms of action and humour.

After such and awesome display of their legendary Bro'ing out in TFA it is going to be hard seeing Chewie on his own now. I suppose he will be with Rey the most but she may also be training for some part of the film (maybe). It is going to be interesting to see how Chewie fits with a new pilot to his co pilot. There really wasnt enough time for Rey and Chewie to get and chemistry cracking really well. She was mostly occupied with BB-8.

Well Chewie is Mahz's boyfriend so maybe we will get the love scene we are all hoping for.

If Rey is a traditional Jedi, I doubt Chewie will be her sidekick for long. It's interesting because I would have thought Finn and Chewie would have made sense except Finn can't fly. Poe looks the part and is an awesome pilot, but had no relationship with Chewie in TFA.

If all else fails, it looks like Nien Numb survived TFA....or better yet BRING BACK LANDO!

After seeing TFA and what they did with Finn and Chewie, i was wondering if Finn would take up become Chewie sidekick? Han was in the Imperial Navy, after he left he became the smuggler he is, Finn was apart of the First Order, it kinda of comes full circle? However, i dont know if that will happen in VIII or VIIII. Finn might be out for the entire Episode VIII or partial due to this injuries but TFA made alot of points with Chewie and Finn, or was i mistaken?

Also, just a note what about Poe?

I think he will be Rey's co-pilot but not Maz's boyfriend, I doubt that would work out.

Based on the way TFA ended, it seems like they want us to believe that both Chewy and the Falcon will stay with Rey. But, assuming Rey is about to begin Jedi training, I wonder if Chewy would just putz around on that remote island, essentially doing nothing, while Rey learns to use the force.

From a film-making standpoint, it makes sense to keep Chewy around. He's a fun character, a strong link to the OT, and (unlike with Han) is not dependent on the availability of a specific actor. Pairing him with Finn would be a lot more entertaining, since Chewy and Rey seem to get along so well - but since Finn isn't a pilot, I'm going to say he spends most of Episode 8 with Rey.

Maybe they'll say Chewy spent the time between movies getting the Falcon back in top shape. There's no reason he couldn't make occasional trips of the island to get the parts he needed.

I think he drops Rey and R2 off and returns to Leia. He'll fight along side the Resistance and try to avenge his buddies death. However, I feel his story arc doesn't continue through the end of the trilogy...maybe he dies trying to kill Kylo, maybe he dies saving Kylo? Or maybe Lando comes back and takes Chewie back to Cloud City and he retires.

He nearly did, which is why I think is the reason as to why Rey partially also had an advantage as Kylo was bleeding like crazy after Chewiw shot him, and the only reason that Kylo didn't die was because he did the same thing he did to Poe in the beginning with his blue blaster .

I love your post, what a great post! I would think that perhaps Chewie would stick around and fix the Falcon as it makes sense as it had sat for who knows how long? Also, that entire ordeal with the freighter that him and Han had, kinda disappointing they just left it. While also heading back to the resistance to help?

That is another great post, i was thinking that he would just drop off Rey and R2 and head back to the resistance. As well, the Falcon needs alot of work from all indications, what happens to Chewie? It was always Han and Chewie, what happens to that beloved character? Does he head back and have Finn fill his shoes?

A thousand directions are possible. So many different ways to go and they all could be good. Whichever one they go with I hope we see a short tempered wookie with a chip on his shoulder.

Very true indeed, i agree with that as well that so many directions are possible. I just dont want to see the same story told over and over and over, i would mind after Ep 9 moving away from the Skywalker storyline and branch out into other stories.

Chewie has to snap and rip someone's arms off. It wouldn't be an extra stroke to the OT it would solidify what Han said. We need to see just how strong these wookies are.

Why am I even posting right now they will screw it up and my life is a mess.

While I'm sure Chewie is pissed at Kylo Ren, you have to realize he was probably there when he was born and probably watched him grow up to some extent. Not to mention he has been involved with the Jedi's for atleast 70 years and with Leia for 40 or so (yeah Lucas...why did you have to throw him in ROTS??). It is my hunch that Chewie winds up with Finn and will continue to work with the Resistance however possible.
