NYCC 2015 (Disney-Lucasfilm Publishing Presents: Star Wars: Journey to The Force Awakens): (25:08) "It's interesting because when the idea of Journey to The Force Awakens first floated - like we knew it as a concept before it got ever really concrete in terms of deciding how many books and what they would be about - but, we knew that this was an area that the publishing was going to go into so together with the [Lucasfilm] Story Group led by Kiri Hart - once the storyline for The Force Awakens really solidified we had this...an offsite meeting, we spent the whole day mapping out conceptually what happens in the 30 years between Episode VI and Episode V...I mean, Episode VII. And a lot of that was informed by ideas and notes that George Lucas left us, some world-building that Michael Arndt did early on in developing the script for VII, and some ideas that Rian Johnson wanted to explore going into VIII. So, we took all this together and started loosely mapping out. And the further we got out from [Return of the] Jedi - the looser we got in order to allow ourselves maximum creative flexibility. The closer we got to VII the more concrete we got. So the clearest picture of what this universe looks like right now is leading into VII and leading out of VI. And since we knew Journey [to the Force Awakens] would be coming out [announced on StarWars.com on March 10, 2015] in anticipation of VII, it's like let's explore that time frame. So all this produced a document that I wrote describing the state of the universe up to - and we all kind of picked this seismic event called the Battle of Jakku. And so a lot of these stories are floating around this event and we're going to continue telling that story. And we knew that it was going to be told in print as well as our friends at DICE and EA developing Battlefront. We knew that could be a great place for them to explore as well. So it's essentially just building this roadmap that we knew would be able to service all these different formats [and] different media." (October 10, 2015)

Star Wars Bookworms Podcast: (21:38) "A lot of that stuff [such as Han Solo the racing pilot] came out of... as Episode VII really... as The Force Awakens really took shape and we understood where these characters were gonna be - at a story retreat outside the Lucasfilm Story Group. We figured out, okay, we now know what the endpoint is for VII, and we know where we left off in VI, so let's start mapping the trajectory of these characters' lives in broad strokes so we understand where they've been and what they've been up to. And that development of Han in answering the question, "what does a retired peacetime Han look like?" knowing that he's gonna end up back in the scoundrel form that we know and recognize from the original trilogy - but it's like, it's not like he's been doing that for 30 years. So what does peacetime Han look like? What would he get into? We kind of came to this idea and it's an idea that's gonna surface in other storytelling that takes place in between VI and VII. Kathleen Kennedy: "One of the most interesting things about Kylo Ren is that he’s young. So often, villains in stories are damaged, troubled, older characters. To bring a character into Star Wars as a villain who’s only 30-years-old is interesting. It takes advantage of a troubled teenage life and a back-story that we don’t know much about. We recognize this tension between dark and light, which is prevalent in Star Wars. We can use it as a metaphor for the path from young adulthood to being an adult. Anybody is capable of having interest in the dark side, and that tension of being drawn into something that is somewhat dangerous is relatable. For audiences today, that’s a new and exciting and appealing character. When we look at our own lives, it’s about the choices we make. This is a character that has made a lot of bad choices but not necessarily in the world of Star Wars, because that can go in any direction. This story is a mirror on the world. A lot of kids are experiencing a very troubled landscape politically and a lot of things are happening that suggest that people are being drawn in by danger, turmoil, and unrest. A lot of change seems to be going on politically in terms of world order. Star Wars has uniquely mirrored that in the political structure of the stories. Kylo Ren represents that dark side of society that we can be drawn to, not knowing whose side to be on and not having a clear-cut idea of what's good or bad. All of those things make for a very complex character in Kylo Ren and gives us a lot of opportunity for where we can go with the character." Michael Arndt: "Yeah, it was I think May 2012, and I was just sort of doing nothing. I was back in New York and trying to figure out what I was going to do next. I just finished working on The Hunger Games, and I was like, 'Okay, like no more big Hollywood franchises. I’m going to go back and do my own original stuff.' And then [Kathleen Kennedy] called me up and the initial thing was she wanted me to write VII, VIII, and IX together, and I said, 'There’s no way I can do that because it’s just too crazy and daunting.' And then the story that she pitched me was she just said it’s an origin story of a female Jedi. And I was like, 'I’m in. I can’t say no to that. I have to do it.' I went to the ranch and I met with George and we spent a lot of time talking about samurai movies basically. I passed that test, you know? I had spent five years at Pixar and became a big believer in writers helping each other out, so Kathy was just brilliant in having Larry come onboard, having Simon Kinberg come onboard, and have all of us get together and sit down and just start kicking around ideas about what we wanted Star Wars to be. Michael Arndt: "And, I mean, it’s asking the question about what happened to Luke. I’ll just say very quickly that very early on I tried writing versions of the movie where the girl is at home, her home gets destroyed, she goes on the road, she meets Luke, and then she goes and she kicks the bad guy’s ass. It just never worked. I struggled with this. This was back in 2012. It just felt like every time Luke came in and entered the movie, he just took it over. Suddenly, you didn’t care about your main character anymore because like, 'Oh ****, Luke Skywalker’s here. I want to see what he’s going to do.' This was like a huge thing. I feel so bad for J.J. because it was like, 'The good news is you get to make a Star Wars movie, but the bad news is…' We had long conversations about this, and J.J. so much wanted to have Luke Skywalker in his movie. Maryann Brandon, Editor: "I actually don’t know [who Rey's parents are]. I am not even sure that they know. J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan weren’t talking about it. Now what's interesting is that there is so much back history that Luke has gone through - even if they're not gonna tell it in the story proper - I have to know it for myself what I've been up to. And so there's been a lot of discussion with Rian Johnson - who is the new writer and director of VIII. Because really with VII, you know, he had a lot on his plate. He had to establish a whole new world, a whole new conflict, all these new characters, since Han Solo was going to meet a certain fate." (March 2, 2016)

Mark Hamill: (30m30s) "No [I didn't look at Daisy Ridley and think she looks like me], you clever minx. I might become disoriented and start spilling spoilers left and right. <gestures> First of all when I read, I said, 'Wait a second. Why am I gonna fly 6000 miles for a table listen?' You know, come on. Call me, 'Luke Cliffhanger'. But I said, 'Oh, I get it,' because if I don't show up to the table read, that'll become a story in and of itself. I better show up, right? And every person had a specific place to sit - it's not like we just wandered in and just sat down. <gestures> 'You sit here. You sit here. You sit here. You sit here,' and so forth. So I was across from 'Carrison' and 'Harrie'. And Daisy was right in between them. <gestures> And I thought - see now they start reading things into it, because when they saw the photograph they said, 'Well, she's gotta be the daughter of Han and Leia 'cause look at where she's sitting.' Mark Hamill: (32m23s) "Well, no [I didn't look at Daisy Ridley and think she looks like me.] I didn't really... that didn't really enter into it. I mean, I'd read the script by that point. And it's clear that they don't really want you to know what her [character's] background is or where she came from. <gestures> I saw the parallels. I thought, well she's living in the desert sort of aimlessly and I saw the parallels with my character and so forth. But, um... and heritage is so important in the Star Wars films, you know. I mean we didn't realize it at the time, the whole thing that Vader's the father and so forth. And when Return of the Jedi came along - 'cause George always made it seem like he had all of these mapped out in his head - and then when I read that Leia and I were long separated twins, I said, 'ain't no way - wait a minute. Is he trying to top Vader? That he's dad Vader? I mean, come on.' 'Cause I thought, if anything, let's go for broke - let's have them unmask Boba Fett and it's my long lost mother, you know, who is working for the Resistance as a double agent. It's hard to top Vader-is-the-father - that's the all-time twist ending of them all. So we sort of thought, 'did he tack that on?' I mean we couldn't really figure that out." (March 2, 2016)

Mark Hamill: (34m55s) "But no, I didn't think so much that - I just thought that Daisy was incredible. She's so genuine, so appealing, you know, she's just lovable. She's just luminous, I mean, she just beams. She's just got a wonderful, wonderful charisma about her and I just adore her. She's roughly my daughter's age and that's how I relate to her. Mark Hamill: (1h1m30s) "I just read online - I don't know if it's true, I didn't hear it come out of his mouth - that JJ is very much open to that idea [of including gay characters]. You know, I mean, the internet is a very interesting experience for me because in the old days you would get fan mail and you'd sign as much as you can [...] But now it's like the fans come right into your house and they ask you all these questions: 'I'm getting bullied at school, I'm afraid to come out because my parents are religious and they'll hate me,' and so forth. It just breaks your heart. And they would say to me, you know, 'Could Luke be gay?' And I would say, you know, it's meant to be interpreted by you. If you think he's gay, of course he's gay. If you think he's straight, that's also - anything you want is real. You shouldn't be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves. It seems to me that the trauma of discovering that the only girl you had a big crush on is your sister - you know we all have a big laugh about that but if you're in character that is a traumatic experience. And there's not in the original trilogy - there weren't a lot of options - about the only eligible young woman in the whole universe. They're fantasies meant for children. Children of all ages of course but because they are that they aren't meant to address adult sexuality specifically. (March 2, 2016) (January 2016)
