I like the characterization of the lineage questions as a marketing tool. You have to ask yourself if a huge film studio would be willing to mystery box us for a year if the pay off is something that would disappoint the vast majority of the mystery boxees.

Its not a marketing tool its how a story unfolds.

What a great video Rieekan. Stories unfold by holding information back to tease you across the film. Jaws is a great example, you almost never see whole the shark and it is more frightening when the shark is implied.

This tells me that JJ gets why the OT worked so well. You become slowly immersed in both the story and the universe it is set in. You begin the film completely alienated and very unsure of what is going on. It comes to you little by little with each scene. That's good story telling.

It feels so good watching this video, knowing he's at the helm right now. He GETS it, he understands how even the most unrealistic premise (a giant super shark is eating fishing boats) can still hit very personal, human tones. Even a green puppet who talks like Grover can say profound things that we connect to.

But there's a marketing angle to teasing out questions too. Marketing uses the very devices/mechanisms that tell a good story to market the story. Marketing IS a story in an of itself and the best marketing campaigns mirror the narrative structure of good story telling.

I'm convinced they will use the lineage question to market the film both BEFORE it launches and AFTER it is released. It also just happens to be really good story telling too.

    J.J. hits the nail square on the head;

"Mystery is the catalyst for imagination"........seems to sum up every speculative post that we're all reading and discussing and will probably continue to do so right up until TFA release date :).

I know this isn't your main point, but even if the story did parallel the EU closely it would seem original to 99% of the viewing audience. JJ Abrahms did a fantastic job of rebooting Star Trek, to me. He took the big themes and characters of Star Trek and made it for a new generation, (but in the process some die-hard fans were disappointed). That's why he isn't going to try anything innovative in terms of the story line, here, or muck about with the old characters we know and love.

What I think he'll do is introduce new concepts and characters that take the franchise in a novel direction, but only after the connection with the OT is honored and the old fans are happy. But you and me and the people familiar with the EU and Aftermath, etc.- we're a tiny part of the market. The vast majority of SW fans have seen the movies and nothing else- he'll stir up the nostalgia and then move on from there. Those are the people this new trilogy are meant for.

I do think, though, that the spin-off movies will be much more innovative & exciting to super-fans.

I think a lot has happened since I created this post. The speculation, the confirmation, the pictures and the trailer have caused so such excitement and new matter for us all to discuss that I'd probably say most SW fans have changed their opinions and views towards the whole thing time and time again.

I can honestly and whole-heartedly state that I believe this movie (and all others to follow) will be absolutely amazing irrespective of character lineage, plot twists and 'practical effects Vs CGI'.

I'm so excited to see the movie however the one thing that will not change is the differences in opinion of those that feel disappointed with it and those that are blown away. Personally, I wouldn't be bothered if there was a minock under the costume of Ren or Phasma.......I just gots to see this film!!! :)

And I totally agree with you......the new generation of fans are going to marvel at these movies. My 8 year old daughter will be one of 'em!

I don't understand the fan obsession that every new character has to be the child of existing characters. But I am comfortable with the thought that Rey is a Skywalker. I don't think it really matters whether she is Luke or Leia's. In my mind it's more likely she is Han and Leia's kid, she seems pretty comfy around the Falcon.

very interresting video there, thanks for sharing! so yeah.. my fear is that we won`t see much of Luke in ep 7.. because he is our big known mystery box... will hear a lot of talk about him and his whereabouts, basicaly ep 7 could I think be called "the quest for Luke" that I would not be surprised.... and Even if we get to know who is father/children of who in a few weeks ( my guess: Kylo= sKYwalker+soLO and rey is a Luke's daughter) there will be still more mystery boxes.. who's the mother?
In many ways JJ sticks with Cambell's story theories ( Hero with a thousand faces https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hero_with_a_Thousand_Faces ) and it is great!
the Hero(es) have an unknown past and uncertain future, an object triggers the quest, a threat falls up on them, a sage will help them on their path to give them advises, there is doubt, and also choices.. do I need to continue?

Well people making suggestions about many characters in several threads are separate speculations. Few if anyone believes that all of them will all be happening.

I think that Kylo and Rey have always been the strongest contenders.

The text parser says that I can't add anymore text to the original post. lol So I had to start a new post. And moved some stuff over to make it easier to follow and edit.

    PART II

    About Rey:

Table read photo (April 29, 2014)

Kathleen Kennedy: "Family is very important inside the Star Wars movies. Daisy when she came in I was particularly taken by the fact that she kept talking about her family–her mom, her sisters. We began to realize that many of the things about Daisy are the things that are inside the character that is played in the movie of Rey." (April 30, 2015)

Kathleen Kennedy: "[Rey is] extremely significant [but] I don’t want to spoil the story." (October 14, 2015)

Kathleen Kennedy: "I’ll dodge [the questions] artfully." "[Rey and Kylo Ren] could [be twins]! / [Twins] could [run in the Skywalker family]!" (November 6, 2015)

Kathleen Kennedy: "Daisy Ridley’s character Rey is the new generation’s Luke Skywalker." (December 14, 2015)

    J. J. Abrams: "YES [the numbering of these cards has significance.]" (December 11, 2014 - Rey's card)

    J. J. Abrams: "We’d just began to work together and we knew that fans were curious about what was going on, and we thought we’d put out a little picture." "[The table read photo] was not a posed photograph." (December 1, 2015)

Harrison Ford: "[My favorite action scene is] the sword fight with Rey and Kilo Ren. Fantastic visual storytelling." (December 4, 2015)

Harrison Ford: "[If I weren't Han Solo] I’d like to be Daisy Ridley’s character in the new one. [She's] awesome… and cute." (December 15, 2015)

Daisy Ridley (twitter): "guys the world and his wife can update IMDB [to say that I'm playing Jaina Solo]. Just saying" (June 14, 2014) It soon after disappeared from IMDb and the tweet deleted.

Daisy Ridley (twitter): "that time I made best pals with Gary! BEST DOG! (Best family!) @carrieffisher @imeanwhat" "I said 'family' cause Gary is like a child and Carrie, Abe and Billie are wonderful, nothing more than that!" (September 18, 2014)

Daisy Ridley: "I'm not sure how much I can say... I guess because that I've said that I'm solitary. That's how I begin. That is probably a big clue as to what, um...what it is." (April 30, 2015)

Daisy Ridley: "Oh really? I never heard that [Rey is the daughter of Han Solo and...]. <laughs>" "No, I did. I did. There was so many rumors. I'm so excited for people to watch the film, and yeah, know what happens there." (April 30, 2015)

Daisy Ridley: "Who is [Rey]? <eyeroll>" "I'm so excited for everyone to see [Rey's] journey." "I don't think you'll be disappointed." (April 30, 2015)

Daisy Ridley: "Yeah [Rey's identity is a secret]. I'm sorry!" (April 30, 2015)

Daisy Ridley: "The story is wonderful. It's very exciting. And there's themes of family and finding your place and all the gorgeous things that make Star Wars what it is." (April 30, 2015)

When asked to describe the movie in one word, Ridley said "family", and Kennedy said "beginning." (April 30, 2015)

Daisy Ridley: "Isn't that [Rey's connection to the Force] a question! <smirk> We will have to wait to December 18th to find that out. But I would say that the Force is in all living things. Exclusive! <laughs>" (August 16, 2015)

Daisy Ridley: "Let's see what this question is going to be... am I Han Solo's daughter?" Ignores interviewer's invitation to tell him. "How Rey feels about Han... I guess we'll have to wait and see. December 18th, guys. Tune in." (August 16, 2015)

Daisy Ridley (Instagram): "(guys this isn't a spoiler alert [about me and the Force], we are messing around!)" (September 28, 2015)

John Boyega (Instagram - comment): "big fan of yours! Can you please tell me what ray's second name is ? :)" (September 28, 2015)

    Daisy Ridley (Instagram - comment): "#whatisthisthingwithmysurname #isitimportantorsomething?!" (September 28, 2015)

Daisy Ridley: "The true story of Rey will be revealed in December 2015..." (November 4, 2015)

Daisy Ridley: "The main difference is that [Rey] didn't have a family and I have a family that I'm close to." "Yeah [I know who Rey's parents are]. Questions will be answered, absolutely [in the first episode]. The main question will be answered." (November 4, 2015)

Daisy Ridley: "It almost felt like [Matilda's] journey is similar [to Rey's] in that Matilda starts with so much she doesn't really want to be and finds out something about herself that's special." (November 4, 2015)

Daisy Ridley: "[Rey]’s been alone for a long time." "When something occurs when you’re 5, you know what went on but you don’t understand the reasoning. She's hopeful for what lies ahead, whether that involves the past or not." "Hope makes people good, a lot of the time." "You hope for a brighter future, and resentment is outweighed." (November 11, 2015)

Daisy Ridley: "[Rey]’s never sat around a table and had a meal with someone else. She works to feed herself, and she goes to sleep, and she gets up again. It is a sad life." "The film, for Rey, is a journey of finding out that no one is no one." (November 11, 2015)

Daisy Ridley: "People were like, 'Oh my God, you're Rey Solo' - this is what people do, they just assume I'm Han Solo's daughter, it's not even a question any more - 'and you're still mopping the floor!' I'm like, "Yep... floor's still dirty.'" <funny voice and squawky laugh> (Glamour UK magazine January 2016)

Daisy Ridley: "Well. Rey starts alone - and I did not mean 'Solo' when I said 'solitary'." <laughs> "Is she an orphan? Who's to say?" <winks> "And the word 'heroine' keeps getting mentioned, which I don't agree with. When JJ and I talked about this, he said: 'She's an ordinary girl, in extraordinary circumstances." (Glamour UK magazine January 2016)

Daisy Ridley: "Yeah [Han and Leia would make good parents hypothetically for Rey]! The combination of the two... Kick-ass woman and kind of cool dad. Yeah." (Force 4 Fashion December 2015)

Daisy Ridley: "Absolutely stunning photographs for this month's @time .........." (December 3, 2015) This instagram post featuring the image of Ridley, Fisher, Ford, and Driver from TIME was very soon deleted and another instagram post was made. "Oops THESE are the official ones ☺️☺️☺️ gorgeous, gorgeous spread for @time " (December 3, 2015)

Daisy Ridley: "I think the crux of Rey’s story is that she begins alone and she is thrust into this adventure and reaches new possibilities and heights — heights, ha ha ha, in a spaceship — that she never believed she could have done. She’s pushed beyond her limits; she meets people and forms relationships she never imagined was possible. And everything she does exceeds everything she could have ever imagined. So it’s a really wonderful story. Her story is so relatable — if you take away space and everything. She’s just a young girl on a journey trying to do the right thing." <Smiles> "You’ll have to wait and see [if Rey is Han and Leia's daughter]." (December 4, 2015)

Daisy Ridley speaks about various fan theories about the film: (December 4, 2015) (December 17, 2015)

Daisy Ridley: "[Rey] has parents." She does not specifically answer the question of Rey's father (December 8, 2015)

Star Wars: Before The Awakening (Greg Rucka): "On Jakku, a young woman who calls herself REY struggles to live in an isolation necessary for her own survival."

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - A Junior Novel (Michael Kogge): "'Beebee-Ate? Okay. Hello, Beebee-Ate. My name is Rey.' The droid inquired if she had a family name. 'No, just Rey.'"

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - A Junior Novel (Michael Kogge): "Once there was a girl who called herself Rey."

Daisy Ridley saw the final cut of The Force Awakens for the first time with Adam Driver and Carrie Fisher in late November 2015. (Source) (Source)

Well, in summary, Jaina and Jacen were twins, both were sent to the Jedi Academy, and Jacen went to the dark side and became Darth Caedus. Jaina at the end defeats Jacen.

Well done. I kinda hope that Rey is...a fresh new character, not necessarily related to any known character. I can see her being trained at a young age at Luke's academy. Hmmm....Well....Is it 2017 yet? :(
