If she is a former student of Luke's... she could have built her own. A lightsaber is a personal weapon. But there may be a handing of it over to the new generation, a passing of the baton, as it were. To the one that is "worthy". Could be Finn.

I think there's a chance that the staff is a lightsaber. In fact, I think that there's a chance that it is the true McGuffin of the film. I have a sneaking suspicion that all of this talk about Luke's/Anakin's old saber is a red herring, both for the audience and for the characters in the movie. Imagine a scenario like this:

The First Order - a darkside cult - is intent on collecting Sith artifacts in order to use them in some sort of ceremony to summon the spirit of Darth Vader or restore him to life or some such nonsense.

Meanwhile, Rey has, through a series of events, come into possession of a lightsaber once belonging to Anakin Skywalker.

The First Order receives word (likely via the voice in Kylo Ren's head, whom he believes to be the spirit of Vader) that a lightsaber - which is the key artifact required to reawaken the Dark Lord - is on the remote planet of Jakku, and that Rey is the one who has it. They are to retrieve it immediately.

A member of the Resistance who has infiltrated The First Order learns of their intention regarding the lightsaber and sends word to Leia. In response, and sensing a real threat, Leia sends her best pilot - Poe Dameron - to Jakku, in hopes that he can retrieve the lightsaber and rescue Rey before their foes arrive.

Unfortunately, Poe arrives on Jakku at the same time The First Order troops do. He and Kylo Ren both approach the Vicar (the defacto leader of the local inhabitants) asking about the lightsaber and about the girl. The Vicar, having no love for The First Order nor the Resistance - but very strong affection for Rey, chooses to divulge nothing to either party, which results in his execution at the hands of Kylo Ren. Poe is taken into custody (along with a defecting stormtrooper) while the bad guys burn the Vicar's village to the ground.

Later, aboard a star destroyer, Poe is interrogated and his mind is probed by Kylo Ren. Having no resistance against the Force powers of Ren, Poe divulges the details of his mission. Afterward, he is thrown into a cell with Finn - the defecting stormtrooper.

Together, Finn and Poe make a daring escape, and they steal a tie fighter only to crash land on the surface of Jakku. Having nowhere to escape to, and with Poe injured and unconscious, Finn seeks out Rey in hopes that completing Poe's mission will bring him a step closer to being a step further from Kylo Ren and certain death.

Finn and Rey somehow meet cute a short while later, but only in time to find The First Order hot on their trail. They escape on the Millennium Falcon, along with BB-8, the clothes on their backs, Rey's ever-present staff, and the lightsaber that everyone seems to be after.

Shortly after evading the forces of The First Order, they find themselves captured nonetheless - this time by the crew of a large smuggling freighter who recognized the Millennium Falcon. It's Han and Chewie, determined to take back the ship that they'd lost a number of years prior.

Han, Chewie, Finn, and Rey (and let's not forget BB-8) make nice, and they decide to bring the lightsaber back to Leia.

The group arranges to meet Leia at Maz Kanata's pub on the lush planet of Whokaresdontmatter. Once there, the group is treated to a Force-powered flashback courtesy of Maz, in which our heroes learn (and thus we do, as well) a whole slew of surprising secrets that fill in some gaps and make the whole plot up to this point much more clear: what happened to send Luke into hiding, who Kylo Ren really is, what his endgame is, why it is imperative that the heroes find Luke, and - most importantly - the fact that it is Rey's staff and not Anakin's old lightsaber that The First Order is truly seeking.

You see, Rey's staff is no simple staff at all, but it is instead the lightsaber once belonging to Darth Plagueis and, with that staff/saber, Kylo Ren will be empowered to bring Plagueis (whom he still believes is Darth Vader) back from the grave.*

*NOTE: It's kind of like the old horror movie trope: be careful when calling out to the spirits of the dead; you never know who will answer. In this case, Kylo Ren intends to awaken Darth Vader, but who he gets instead is Darth Plagueis, who these days is a much more dangerous fella than ol' Anakin.

Anyway, shortly after this revelation at the pub, The First Order attacks and manages to capture Rey. Kylo Ren probes her mind in search of information about Luke's/Anakin's old lightsaber and discovers (with some difficulty and much surprise) the things she recently learned from Maz.

Soon, heroes and villains alike are headed for the "Evil Castle" - the bad guys to awaken the Sith Lord entombed there, and the good guys to find Luke (who is already there and guarding the crypt), rescue Rey, and stop Kylo Ren.

Anywhoooo... that's just some of my own musings/interpretations/predictions about some of the plot points. What was my main point again? Oh, yeah: the staff might very well be a lightsaber, and Luke's old saber as the McGuffin could be a red herring.

    That's all I've got. Thoughts?

image.jpg Why is everyone reaching for Rey's staff to be a lightsaber. It's clearly not. Rey having a staff lightsaber from the start of the film just sounds way too ridiculous for me, I guarantee you its probably an electro staff at MOST, or maybe it's a type of blaster we haven't seen before that can double as a melee weapon. image.jpg

I was thinking today that if Rey was Luke's daughter, there'd be quite a bit of how and why which I don't see him delivering it in the same way as Shmi did about Anakin's father: "I met someone, we married, had a daughter, wife died."

But with Rey being the daughter of Han and Leia, the how and why is already there.

I still think she is more of a Solo than a Skywalker.

So do I. Leia looks like Padme and if Rey was Luke's daughter, Daisy probably wouldn't have been cast.

If it's not a lightsaber i will be surprised. I can't see how anyone can't see the top of the staff look like a saber. If it were just a staff they could have made it look like anything that wasn't a lightsaber. They clearly intended it to look like a saber. JJ and company know we hardcore fans would notice that it looks like a lightsaber hilt. If its not one JJ did a very good job of making us talk about it. I doubt he made it look like a saber only to have it not be one.

I see what people are talking about, for sure. But it's more likely nothing more than a similarity. If that were a lightsaber, I don't see how it could be very effective with a giant pole jabbed down the center of it. :p

I really think it's an example of making a connection where one doesn't necessarily exist. Our brains are good at that. Especially since it was basically all we could see in the first teaser. Now the idea is locked in.

I'm not saying it's a lightsaber staff. I'm saying she is hiding the saber in plane sight. For casual fans it will be a huge reveal that she is a jedi when she pulls off the saber and ignites it.

Personally, I agree. Unfortunately, Darth Plagueis does not.

I think Kennedy gave away a big clue. Did she just all but say Rey is Leia's daugheter? She said how Daisy was so much like Rey when she was talking about her mom and being a sister. Rey clearly hints that more is going on with her on Jakku then meets the eye too.

And there *are* some who think this may be Plagueis' staff. Interesting.

This is why I don't say definitive things in my posts. It's important to keep ourselves open to all kinds of possibilities since we really don't have a clue what's going to happen. :)

Look at Kathleen's face when the guy brings up Han's daughter her poker face is slipping and it almost looks like she is thinking "oh blast!" (guard)
