Tonight I was thinking, from both a story and audience viewpoint, which would be more powerful for Rey:

    1. Rey watches as Kylo strikes down her uncle, whom she has only recently been reunited with after many years.
    Or
    2. Rey watches as Kylo strikes down her father, whom she has only recently been reunited with after many years.

Sorry if someone brings this up later in the thread, but, as you pointed out, Jedi do not seek revenge.

I would change your thought up to state she seeks to avenge Han Solo's murder. Just a slight difference in that a Jedi would be seeking to inflict a punishment as an act of retributive justice.

Oh, she is definitely not a Jedi in TFA from what I can tell. However, . . .

If she takes revenge as her path, she is on the path to the dark side.

If she seeks to avenge Han Solo's death, she is within the light.

I'm not sure I see the difference. In fact, the dictionary says avenge and revenge are the same http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/revenge?s=t

Yoda's "once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny" was bullpoop because Vader was redeemed and Luke was dabbled in darkness.

Maybe she just gets her revenge then feels sorry for it and chooses the light side to defeat uber later in the trilogy.

To avenge is to punish a wrongdoing with the intent of seeking justice.

Revenge is to punish with the intent to harm/hurt as you were harmed/hurt. No interest in justice.

But whatevs. No worries. They are synonymous in many respects.

Well the OT was always about Father vs Son, and the ST is the next generation of skywalker bloodline but from Leia and Han. So I am betting as I post in this before Rey vs Ren, which someone else pointed an interesting dynamic Sister vs Brother. Not sure what we had in the PT I suppose Brother vs Brother Anakin vs Obi-wan?

So what I am saying there is some kinda of family vs family member element.

I can't wait to see Rey in a serious light saber duel. I think she's gonna completely own it.

Lightsaber theory is a good one. I think it's a saber. Two reason to think that. One it looks like one and two it's never to far from her in any of the shots of her. Losing your saber is not good and so she would want to keep it close at all times. Just about every shot in the 2 trailers she has it on her or close to her. If it's just a staff one might just drop it and run when being shot at by a tie fighter. A light saber on the other hand one would never leave behind. Running with out said staff is a lot easier than running with it.

There's 2 lightsabers we know of so far... Kylo's nasty one and Luke's, which we've yet to see ignited. Are there only two in the movie (not including any flashback scenes)? Or is Rey a Jedi or Padawan in hiding? If the Jedi are still being hunted, then she would have a good reason to hide hers, she may have some emotional/personal reasons for not wielding it. I really hope she is or becomes a Jedi... would love a badass female Jedi.

If that is her only weapon she is probably not going to drop it when danger comes. No matter how useful it may or may not be imo.

I would agree that you shouldn't drop a weapon but if it's just a staff its pretty easy to replace.

I think she will get a sabre but that likes a lot like the staff Leia carried as Boussh.

Not really. The end of her staff doesn't look at all like a lightsaber hilt.

It could be a sabre pike or a sabre in hiding but that seems to run contrary to the news that she is repulsed by a light sabre later.

JJ has said half of the rumors out there are not true and only some are true. I think a lot of miss-information has been leaked to keep the films exciting when it hits the screen. I'm not saying she is not repulsed by it but the end of her staff looks more like a lightsaber than not like a lightsaber.

I have also pointed out in the past that in every Star Wars movie some one has been in disguise. Padme in Ep 1, Anakakin in Padme in Ep II, Palpy in Ep I-III, Han and Luke in Ep IV, Lando in Ep V and Liea and Lando in Ep VI. I think we are going to see someone in disguise and I think it will be Rey. I think we will find out that Rey is in fact a jedi.

She will wield a light saber when she confronts Kylo Ren. That is likely when she has to pick up the light saber that repulsed her and accept her destiny. The staff is likely just a staff.
