When I was in Seattle WA in 2012, the local Seattle Times movie critic wrote the Boeing Theater near the Space Needle was the best location to see the Batman film. It was a IMAX screen, ;) .
I might go to a AMC Prime theater or IMAX location.
The IMAX screening of King Kong I watched was worth the $$$. The 3rd act looked great in IMAX. Avatar(2009) was very IMAX 3D friendly. :)
I was unaware of the AMC Prime system or the new laser issues. I wear eyeglasses too so I don't want to walk out like Mr Magoo, :) .

The Boeing theater was upgraded to IMAX laser... though you've moved since then?

Laser is only an issue for prescription glasses in 3D, with 2D it's totally fine. This writer talks about the problem briefly here (quote with article linked below). I'd imagine it varies depending on prescription size as well. I'm going to go see an HDR 3D film (everest) with my friend who wears glasses... if he has issues I can let you know :)

"I'm delighted to report that the movie is in 2D, so there are no internal-reflection issues for those who wear prescription glasses and the color spectrum-separation glasses used by Dolby Vision and other laser-illuminated projectors for 3D. Plus, I felt no need whatsoever for 3D—the detail and dynamic range really made the picture pop with a dimensionality I've never seen before in 2D images."

While it'd be great to see the movie in a real IMAX, I think I'll choose the safer option, the Alamo Drafthouse as that's where I'm least likely to have a bad experience. Strict no talking/no texting rules, solid sound/picture, and most importantly, reserved seating which prevents excessively long line-waiting. I might see it at the IMAX for the second viewing (assuming the movie is good of course).

Does anyone know of any really good movie theaters in the NY-tri-state area, outside of NYC?

My only problem is that I have only one IMAX screen near where I live (that I've never actually been to, either now that I think about it), and as of now they're only listing the 3D version of the film as going to be there, and I'd really rather watch in 2D (nostalgia I guess...) so it looks like I'll just have to watch on a regular screen all those times I want to see the film.

For me it's just going to be a treat to see the film at all as the only other SW film I remember seeing in theatres is AotC, I think... I was like seven at the time, so I'm not 100% sure I even did.

I'll admit my ecstatic enthusiasm waned fully when I read closer and it seemed they're only talking about a 3D presentation making it to IMAX screens. Not a 'gimmick post converted 3d'? Yea right. The Force Awakens wasn't shot in 3D. Theres no way it's not converted in post. Either way, I'm not shelling out for nonsense 3D.

I guess I have to resign myself to watching the film in video.

Post converted 3D can look great if done right... I know TPM got a really bad 3D transfer, but there are different studios who do it that way. Are you certain they didn't film it in 3D? As I understand it they filmed it the same way Into Darkness was filmed ( same cinematographer, same film crew) & that looks great on 3D.

Based on the Comicon trailer it looked like they tossed 2 IMAX cameras on the falcon shot with Rey.

I'm pretty sure they'll have the 2D presentation as well though. Every film that Disney has put out can be viewed in IMAX 3D or 2D.

When you look at the current listings for IMAX films... does it give you the 3D or 2D option? I've found the IMAX's in my area alternate between 2D & 3D... like the 10 am show in 2D, 1pm show 3D, etc, etc.

2D in Malmö. Nothing too fancy I must say, but I'll do the trick.

My theatre doesn't go out that far for specific showings. It just lists the films coming to the IMAX screen each month, and it very specifically says "Star Wars: The Force Awakens 3D" but makes no mention of a non-3D version for IMAX.

Ahh ok... I wouldn't be worried, I'm sure they will be playing both versions in the IMAX theater. Fandango.com usually lists if it's 2D or 3D I'm guessing, no?

Where i'm watching it.. The Cinerama in Seattle.

    -97 foot curved screen
-Christie 6p laser projection (The only commercial theater with this technology)
    -Dolby Atmos audio system
-One of the best places to see a film in 3D. It's not dimmed or dark like normal 3D with state of the art 3D glasses that wrap around covering your entire field of vision

AMC prime is only located in NYC @ Empire 25... it might be worth taking the train there for at least one viewing :)

These are the NY IMAX's capable of displaying 70mm IMAX... You might want to try before you buy though... go see something in IMAX before you buy your tickets to make sure it's one of the 8 story tall screens... as I suspect the IMAX site could be wrong:
    NY

    NEW ROCHELLE

REGAL NEW ROC STADIUM 18 & IMAX

    NY

    NEW YORK

AMC LOEWS LINCOLN SQUARE 13 & IMAX

    NY

    ROCHESTER

    CINEMARK TINSELTOWN USA & IMAX

    NY

    WEST NYACK

AMC LOEWS PALISADES 21 & IMAX

Very cool! You might also want to check out the Boeing IMAX (Pacific science center) for at least one viewing... that's one of the 4 Laser projected IMAX's worldwide. By the looks of it the IMAX sequence will be cropped at the Cinerama. I'm wondering if the Cinerama is capable of playing HDR?

But yeah... very cool, it has an Atmos sound system as well :)

What makes you think it will be cropped? But yeah i'll definitely look into that movie theater. I've been scouting theaters in my area and The Cinerama just seemed like a logical choice. Where would you see it if you lived in Seattle? Cinerama or Pac Science Center?

I would see both! Even if only the IMAX is capable of playing HDR the Cinerama will be your go to for the Dolby Atmos sound track (IMAX doesn't have Atmos... I believe those special IMAX theaters do have their own 3D sound system but it's just not the same as Atmos from what I've heard people say). Both will be special experiences, as I expect Star Wars to make excellent use of Dolby Atmos :)

If you want, I can ask around on the AVS forum regarding which might have the better projector. I'm sure they are both great, but I would always choose the contrast levels of HDR above a larger projection... IMO HDR is the most important aspect of visual fidelity currently. In discussions about HDR I never heard the Cinerama come up, but it is laser so it might be possible that it's capable of displaying HDR.

I could be wrong about the cropping; just looking at the screen's dimensions since IMAX is basically a big square as opposed to the rectangular dimensions of all other theaters. In order to make it fit the 35mm parts of the film would have to shrink to allow for the full 70mm scale? (I think I've heard of this being done though)

The Cinerama does have a 70mm film projector though... so I might be wrong. Definitely check to see if that theater will be playing Star Wars with 70mm.

If I recall, in this episode of Home theater geeks they talk about films being scaled to fit on a screen with different dimensions:

One other thing... Mission impossible is an HDR film... see that while you can @ the Pac Science Center. If it's not your thing, "Everest" & the Mockinjay part 2 will be in HDR as well if you want to see what all the fuss is about. I'm actually quite jealous... I won't get to see HDR until mid september :)

Pretty sure they did not, productions don't make secrets of those kinds of things. The Comic-Con footage of Daisy in the falcon is just a rig set up to capture two angles of the same take. Also, and IMAX 3D camera looks something more like this.

I hope you're right that Disney will release a 2d IMAX presentation. If you haven't been able to tell, I'm quite curmudgeonly about these things--3D and digital cinema.

Interesting, man look at the size of that thing! (seriously didn't mean to quote ANH)

Likewise, I'm somewhat of a curmudgeon as well... & was happy to learn JJ would be shooting to film. If it had been any time prior to April 2015 I'd agree with you about digital vs film projection, as it annoys me that I can make out the pixelation of standard projection. But the new HDR projectors are all projecting @ 4k resolution... I suspect it will be a sight to behold. I've seen 4k projection @ the ICON theater, & it looks pretty good.

Where are you located? If you are in a metropolitan/ Suburban area I wouldn't be concerned about finding a 2D IMAX 70mm show (I think).

Do you dislike 3D or just the post converted stuff? I did see the trailer for TFA in 3D IMAX... it didn't look shoddy at all! But Yeah I can totally understand there are a lot of issues with 3D for many people, I can't fault anyone for hating it. I'm sure Disney is aware of that & wants to sell as many tickets as they can, which I'd say would be to accommodate everyone :)

I've never seen a post-converted presentation that was worth the money I payed for. And I wear corrective lenses, so I get really fatigued when watching most 3D screenings. I'll have to find my way to an HDR theatre one of these days. I have reservations about the advantages/disadvantages of digital film-making in general, but the way Hollywood has been shifting (Thanks to Lucas and the prequels no less, gah) so I really don't complain too much. I agree, that being able to see the pixelation in the theatre is the worst: it generally just feels like watching from my living room. Either way, I put it out of my mind because most films are shot digitally now anyway, and when the opportunity comes along to see see a film from actual reels, it's a rare treat, so naturally I'm keen on seeing that way. I'm actually planning to road trip in I need to in order to see 'The Hateful Eight'.

I'm located in Michigan, and we do have a genuine full-size IMAX theatre in town. So I have no doubt they'll be projected TFA from film there. We'll see if Disney stays true to form and offers 2D screenings. It might mean me sitting out of the midnight showing that my friends wish to attend. Which might be a bit of a relief, I was not looking forward to reviving that particular aspect.

Understood, though did you get a chance to see "into darkness" in IMAX 3D? It looked pretty good to me :)

The hateful eight sounds pretty cool... there is a theater here in Chicago called "the music box" where I got to see 2001 space odyssey on a projector they hauled into the theater the day of... very cool!
I'm overall in agreement with what you say about film, & find it amusing that even though the OT was filmed in the 70's / 80's... that film has a higher scanned resolution than the PT which will forever be stuck @ 1080p. I've been in debates with people who actually film with digital about the pros & cons, I can't deny digital is gradually catching up though. 35mm resolution is something like 11k, so the gap is closing in, but even if film becomes obsolete I think there's just something about the way it's used for production that is inspiring for artists to work with. I actually record to tape (music)... it's very fun to do a live performance to tape.

One thing I was reading about premier nights (I haven't been to a premier night in a long time) is that now they do an 8pm show & midnight show usually... so you may be in luck if one of the showings is in 2D.

Well I plan on seeing it in both theaters but I want my initial viewing to be at the theater that will give me the best movie going experience. Now you have me torn!! Do you think the pacific science center will show TFA in IMAX 2D? Because it seems that IMAX is only shown in 3D these days. Heres a little more info about the Christie 6p Laser projector that I found if you care to watch:
