I just finished reading the comics of The Star Wars, which were based on the original draft of ANH. If you haven't read it, its definitely worth checking out. Basically, Luke is an old Jedi (Jedi-Bendu) general, old friend of Jedi Kane Starkiller, father of Annikin (that's how it's spelled). Luke trains Annikin, who falls in love with Princess Leia (unchanged). Artoo looks like himself with the Chopper additions from Rebels, Wookies look like Zeb with Wookie fur, and Threepio looks like the McQuarrie concepts. Han Solo is a giant, yet affable, green hulking monster that is very helpful. The Millenium Falcon part is played by a ship identical to the Tantive IV. Some interesting parts:

    -- Story starts on Utapau.
-- Emperor is not Force sensative, nor is Darth Vader (who wears the suit, though no helmet, but with cranial scars and a red eye).
-- Many locations are mentioned, sometimes not directly related to the canon films, but other times they are, like the Imperial Capital is Alderaan.
-- Jedi take Padawans (this was written long before ANH was filmed).
-- Jedi acknowledge that they're getting wiped out and have to keep the line growing. It appears in this, that Jedi dads train their kids to be jedi and pass them off when they're teenagers.
-- The Knights of the Sith are known and the Darth Vader character is honored to meet Prince Valorum (haha), who is a Sith Knight.

This is an awesome comic series and I'm certain, given Lucas' tradition, they'll draw on some places and names for TFA.

Two takeaways from the comics based on GL's original story:
1- Lots of people use lightsabers, even stormtroopers.
2- Place names will show up again. Look for Aquilae, Ophuchi, and a few others I'll go back and dig out.

ETA- Hopefully, if they use this earlier material, they'll leaved out "Force of Others". These Jedi literally say, "May the Force of Others Be With You". Dumb.

It is interesting to see how much things have changed... I read the script once, but I have not seen the new comics...

That's a really great comic series! I could see Prince Valorum as a template for Kylo Ren!

I wonder, is there a connection in the comic (and/or early script) between Princess Leia and Prince Valorum? And, is there any hint anywhere that Darth Father... um, I mean, Darth Vader is anyone's dad?

You know, I was thinking of picking it up but hesitated, losing interest at some point. I might pick it up purely for the novelty though, as what you've mentioned here sparks my interest.

I've always been fascinated by the evolution of Star Wars. For example, in the early concept described in this thread, the Imperial capital is a city in the clouds and it's in the atmosphere of a gas giant called Alderaan. The name "Alderaan" was later given to the planet that Leia is princess of and the concept of a city in the atmosphere of a gas giant was reused for Bespin.

I'm fascinated by the McQuarrie sketches based on the early scripts, such as the middle-aged bearded Jedi and the heroine lead who is dressed like Rey, and the Captain Phasma looking troopers. Some of the early Vader concepts look a lot like Kylo Ren. The early X-wing fighters with split engines are also to appear in TFA. I think this early art has been really influential to the thinking around TFA.

There's no questionable parentage of any of the characters. Valorum is the son on the Emperor, and Leia is the daughter of the king of Aquillae, which is a planet that's sort of the last holdout from the Empire. There's a Death Star, but its called the Space Fortress and isn't as big. Vader is not a Force user, basically he's just an Imperial general that's leading the attack on Aquillae.
