SPECULATION Decoding "Kira"

Let me open up with the well known fact I find the use of "Kira Rey Solo" to be like nails on a chalkboard. People still seem to think that Kira is in someway a part of Episode VII beyond being used as a codename for Rey (alongside Fawn). As much as I would love to sit here and bash that line of thinking that will get us nowhere, instead I propose we take this Kira obsession another route and examine what the use of that codename means for Rey's characterization.

Let us begin with showing a lovely picture of Kira


When I was a child there were three films I watched with regularity. Star Wars Episode IV, Willow, and The Dark Crystal. Kira here was one of the two protagonists of The Dark Crystal, one of the last Gelflings (and the sole remaining female) Kira was raised an orphan by Podlings in the swamps. She is a kind and gentle soul and can talk to animals (doubt Rey has that ability though).

Anyway Kira meets Jen, the other last Gelfling, who is in possession of this really important shard he needs to go to an evil castle with in order to restore this giant crystal. Plot happens and together they save the day, albeit with SPOILER a dead Kira (she gets better).

For those who are unhappy with my brief description of Kira there is plenty of stuff about her gathered by us Dark Crystal fans, who are totally not a cult, that can be found on the internet. Or you could just watch the movie, Gary Kurtz made it with Jim Henson and Frank Oz.

Anyway there is a lot connecting The Dark Crystal with Star Wars, the biggest of course being the names involved in the production. Thus I felt that when developing a codename for Rey they decided to go with Kira as a homage to the cult classic and hinting towards connections between the two characters. For me the comparison speaks to me of Rey being an orphan child of destiny, a last of her kind who unknowingly will play a part in reshaping the galaxy. Perhaps I take the comparison to far, what do you all think?

Well if they use the term Kira in the film then why was she the only person who they used her actual name during production when literally everyone else went by codenames?

 

I've noted a handful of those myself, Fawn to me speaks both to gentleness of character and a connection to Bambi. Her rejection of the lightsaber suggests a desire to be peaceful even if she is adept with her staff.

But I also needed an excuse to talk about Dark Crystal haha. However, I officially open up discussion for other avenues of decoding Kira.

That thing has been rumored since the 80's, I don't even know what sort of story is left to tell. It is a very rich world though. A prequel would be better suited I feel.

Another thing worth noting is that Kira in a sense provided the street smarts for the heroic duo while not holding as much academic knowledge. But she did know more history than Jen

 

Ya I noticed the resemblance to Maz myself when I was watching The Dark Crystal today. Honestly I see some potential parallels in my interpretation of TFA and Dark Crystal, but it may be my hypothesis tainting the results. Besides Dark Crystal followed an archetypical story similar to how Episode IV did so the feeling of resemblance is intentional
