Not even remotely close to being the same thing. The thing was that Ben Affleck was never happy with his script to The Batman. Even if some of the other people involved with the project were. WB was pushing him to get it out sooner and Affleck realized that he couldn't make a movie he would be happy with, so he stepped down.

Meanwhile, Disney have repeatedly noted how happy they were to have worked with him, as he gave them the only Star Wars movie so far to not suffer from production issues. They don't seem to be rushing him on his movies and the only reason people really speculate that they might not happen is because they didn't like The Last Jedi and that's it.

Disney straight-up iced James Gunn a day after some creepy, bull**** jokes he made a decade ago resurfaced. Do you really think they'd beat around the bush if they didn't want to work with Rian Johnson anymore?
If Jackson made a Star Wars movie, then it'd be three hours long with scenes that never end peppered into the story.

I've given up on ever enjoying the films again, since they frustrate me without end, but this news could a Godsend to those who indulge in Star Wars supplementary material like I do. Simply put, the constant release of films have put a stranglehold on the current canon so that there was no breathing room for anything but small-scale, play-it-safe stories for the comics and the novels. Both mediums were essentially relegated to being promotional material for the films, with next to no original content and any big, ambitious or creative story arcs or events reserved for the movies. This, in my opinion at least, is what makes so much of the current canon materials lackluster and disposable, without any of the weight or impact of the EU.

Maybe having film releases spaced out a little more will give authors and artists some creative breathing room. Time will tell for certain, but I really hope that Lucasfilm will use this opportunity to be a bit more creative with their spin-off material, instead of throwing out more tired OT-centric monster-of-the-week stories with no impact whatsoever.

I've been wrong before, though. I remember excitedly thinking that having the money and resources of Disney would allow for all kinds of new and inventive material to be in The Force Awakens...and look how that turned out.

Right. Now they have no issue putting out 2-3 movies a year, and quality product at that. Also, worth noting that they are in Year 10 of that entire project timeline, and SW is only in Year 3.

And part of the reason why is that Marvel has something of an assembly-line approach. Their model is completely different and I honestly don't think it would work if you applied it to Star Wars, particularly since the franchise is so driven by having works that take place in vastly different timelines at once that you can't do a crossover without something like time travel and alternate realities (which Lucasfilm are smart enough to not indulge in with this franchise, "A World Between Worlds" notwithstanding, since it was used as a plot device to save Ahsoka and to help Ezra cope with Kanan's death).

    The Hobbit Trilogy
    The Lovely Bones
    King Kong

At least the battle scenes would be epic if he did a SW movie.

Has anyone thought about the reason why Bob didn't mention anything about Rian's trilogy is because Rian is currently working on a different movie project with Daniel Craig and theres literally no new information about it that they haven't told us already? Just food for the thought.

Or they have said repeatedly it's still going on, whereas the B&W series hasn't been discussed much.
A lot of reasons he didn't mention it

I liked all the new movies so I don't consider this good news at all. TJL was great, SOLO was great, RO was basically x wing porn, TFA was solid. I've never been sure what anyone has been complaining about. We made it through the prequels, what could be worse than that? Disney has the budget and the resources to just crank these out forever. I wish things hadn't gotten so toxic because I was really enjoying living in a world with annualized Star Wars movies.

Plus, the press release for Knives Out explicitly mentioned that he'll do another Star Wars right afterward.

I have to wonder if it would have been better for Lucasfilm PR-wise if they had just announced that he'd be working on another movie (with murmurs that it could be spun into a trilogy) instead of saying that he'd have three movies to work on.

Maybe. But then people would be in an uproar about a lack of "connected" films or "they don't trust him enough!" etc etc

He would also include scenes that aren't even in the books!

Apologies, my intention wasn’t that, just stating my view. Creating new Star Wars films without destroying the legacy is a tall order. It is if my view that instead of releasing a film every year, they should’ve spent more time planning out the ST and making it as great as possible. Now whether you liked TLJ or not (I did), there can be no doubt that the planning of this trilogy have gone amiss. What’s more, RO and Solo both suffered in production and imo were average movies.

    yep...Johnson is doomed

Any chance that disney will take COMPLETE control over future movies?

Like how kevin feige took control of marvel films over Marvel itself and made the film division into a seperate entity within disney?
