"Likely locations in the capital's southeast include the densely- populated Iztapalapa and the rural Tlahuac, which is quickly becoming ubanized, a staff of Mexico City's Filming Commission told the daily Reforma.

"They were interested in types of caves or grottoes that are there. Given their features, they thought they could appear to be another planet," the staff added."

Both of these areas are rather poor. I think Disney just wants a cheap place to film. The interesting part here is that they are scouting out caves and grottoes. What planet do you think this will be?

Ach-To. Rey's going to have to enter a cave in VIII, and hopefully she will leave her weapons outside.

I don't think it has anything to do with economics... I was googling images of the caves surrounding mexico city, they are very unique.

I'm not saying they chose Mexico in general because it was cheap, but the specific towns of Iztapalapa and Tlahuac. They are poor, somewhat urbanized towns without any special scenery.

I could totally see them using Crytal Cave in Mexico as a Kyber Crystal source:

But sadly this cave is in Mexico City and not the towns that Disney is looking into.

That's one of the most amazing natural wonders in that part of the world.

    Kyber Crystals indeed!

But, if Disney ever does it, they should plan on green-screening actors into that, because, on top of it taking 20 minutes to reach via a mine shaft, it gets really hot and humid very quickly there, as National Geographic stated: "the temperature leaps to 112 degrees Fahrenheit with 90 to 100 percent humidity."

Maybe this means we will in fact get to see some Jedi training with Luke and Rey in Episode VIII. I had fun last week imagining how one such scene in a cave could work out.

Or maybe it's for Kylo's training scene with Snoke. I also tried to work out something creatively in that context.

Caves are great -- especially as metaphors:
    • Luke's descent and mystical Force vision in the cave in The Empire Strikes Back (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Cave_of_Evil)
    • and, in our own world, the philosophical tale, told by Plato, of the cave -- AKA "The Allegory of the Cave -- wherein prisoners chained to the floor watch shadows on the wall projected by the fire behind them. It's only when one breaks the chains, sees the fire and the shadows for what they are, and travels out of the cave does that someone begin to discern between illusions and reality.

    For more on that...

That crystal cave is too dangerous. Very wet, hot and extremely sharp. 300 meters underground. Hard to get a movie crew and actors in there, because people have to wear protective gear and the insurance costs would be crazy. They could easily make synthetic crystals on set rather than risk lives going there.

It's an ordeal just to get scientists in there for 10 minutes:

I remember reading a while ago like almost 2 years ago that caves were being used to film for TFA or something like that...maybe they are using this as a cheap stand-in like they're doing with that European city as a potential stand-in for Skellig-Michael as per the rumors as of now .

Mexico is a great country, one of my favorites (I just been in 9...hahaha).

I wish they can use some of the temples, piramids and other buildings of their beatiful ancient civilization.

Yes but it wasn't in Mexico and I think there were even pictures of something happening there early on unless I'm mistaken ...

Maybe Disney are checking out caves in Mexico to find and cast a real-life chupacabra in VIII ?! ;)
