So Kylo's line that we heard from the toy was "Don't be afraid." Out of all the reveals about him, his voice, etc, this stands out to me the most.

There's probably a short list of who he might be talking to when he says this, but aside from that, I think this line informs his character quite a bit, as it is notably un-Sithlike. The Sith loved them some Fear. I think Kylo Ren saying this could indicate that the philosophy of the Knights of Ren is different by a stretch from the Sith, or it could indicate he's not as brutal at the moment he says that as he usually is, or as might be typical of a Knight of Ren.

Could it be he says it in a sentimental moment? There is that rumor that Snoke advises him to not get sentimental. Maybe he still has a soft spot for whoever he is talking to when he says it; to Rey, it could indicate he is edging close to kindness if he's saying it while interrogating her... possibly even seduction. If he's saying it to Max Von Sydow's character right before executing him, that's brutal. Those are the main ideas that popped into my head.

So is this a phrase that comes from the heart of Kylo Ren the man, or his training as a Knight of Ren? Why shouldn't the person he's addressing be afraid?

    Any thoughts?

Well, I think its official (JJ said, right?) that Kylo is not a sith.

And, as you said I believe that he's talking to Rey or Finn, must be one of these two characters.

IMO words can be deceiving, they should be very afraid, it's a old jedi mind trick.

Yes, he said in an interview that Kylo got his name Ren because he is a member of the Knights of Ren. I'm wondering how different they are from the Sith, and how much in line with whatever philosophy they hold Kylo is himself. Maybe he secretly has doubts about their motives? Not as though he's likely to turn into a good guy since we'd be treading too close to Anakin's story if that happened, but maybe he's got his own agenda that doesn't quite fall in line with Snoke's plans.

Good point about them being tricked by his words. Also, I didn't realize Finn and Kylo would interact very much in this film other than the duel at the end. I wasn't aware of rumors that he gets captured in the Starkiller attack.

I think he wants them to be afraid. The way he says that line made me feel very uneasy. I imagine that is the point.

I thought that was weird, too. Fear is the path to the Dark Side, and all that. He says it very seductively... same with "Don't fight it, you know you can't."

I think he must be talking to Rey, during her interrogation. We don't really know what goes on/what each of them learns during that, but it probably drives what happens later (Kylo with Han, Rey with Luke)...... interesting that he sounds friendly.

The sith don't love to be afraid.

Fear is a path to the dark side, but it's meant to be rejected, not embraced. Anger is what's embraced. Selfishness.

I didn't say they love to be afraid, rather that their journey to Sithdom begins with fear.

    Exactly.

Although granted, I don't think "fear" means what Yoda described in this context.
Yoda was talking about what was behind Anakin's fear. Anakin was afraid to lose his mother, and then he was afraid to lose his wife. Attachment made him afraid to lose people, and that fear made him weak and open to manipulation.

When Kylo tells Rey not to be afraid, he's probably just telling her not to be afraid of him. To let him guide her.

Can we safely assume he's talking to Rey?

    (I think so)

As did Tarkin. The point is, whether Kylo wants someone to be afraid or not it really doesn't offer any insights into his personal philosophies.

He could be mocking someone, or it really could be straight forward. He says it to Rey because he wants her to hear what he has to say.

The new databank entries on starwars.com mention an "interrogator droid." If it's like the IT-O Interrogator from ANH, then Kylo might be saying one of these lines to a captured Poe at the beginning of the film. "Don't fight it, you know you can't" -- as in, don't fight the mind-probe torture bot, you know I'll get the secret information out of you anyway.

The "Don't be afraid" line sounds like Kylo's taunting someone he's about to kill -- like he bested Finn in their duel and he's standing over him about to strike. "Don't be afraid, [I'll make your death quick]."

Which made me think about the rumor he executes Max Von Sydow's character on Jakku.

Maybe Kylo just thought it was some cold-blooded $hit to say to a Vicar before he chopped a broadsaber through his neck.

Because "stop crying, you little b*tch" would've changed the rating and Di$ney wouldn't get all the kids' $. Also would've given the geeks ptsd flashbacks

With the reveal that the First Order has Interrogator Droids, it seems interrogation could be a regular process for Kylo and the FO.

If Rey is to be interrogated and resist the process, it would make sense dramatically for us to see the process succeed earlier in the movie. This would make Rey's resistance all the more powerful and meaningful. So the line "don't be afraid" and "don't fight it, you know you can't" could be featured in this earlier interrogation scene, maybe? The gentle tone of the line (I haven't heard it, I'm going off what people here are reporting) could be part of the interrogation ploy (perhaps the lines are repeated for each, they are part of the "script" Kylo follows for all interrogations, perhaps?)

But who would be the victim of this earlier, demonstratively successful interrogation? Poe? Finn? The Vicar?....
