Ezra's Lightsaber

So far it's only been in commercials and seen with the Ezra action figure and Halloween costumes.

OK, folks, so after all the discussion on the new Big Bad's saber in the TFA trailer, I thought I'd find out what you all thought of Ezra's saber. I'll put the pic in a spoiler tag just in case you don't want to see it until it's time.

So what do you all think of the saber design? Is it better than the one in TFA? Who do you think builds it? Does he learn to build it from Kanan, or is he guided by the Force? Or does he learn somehow from TCW's Huyang? Or maybe Ahsoka?

 

They're coming up with some unique lightsaber designs, especially when you consider the Inquisitors from Rebels. This seems a little more traditional, with the added function his has. Even Kanan's has to be partially assembled before he uses it, what's it's purpose?

 

I can't wait to see Ezra fight with the lightsaber for the first time. Hope it's a better moment than when Kannan revealed his.

 

The appendage off of his lightsaber hilt is supposed to be a blaster, right? It's a little strange since we haven't even seen Ezra use a blaster yet. He's always just shooting his stupid slingshot thing. This design seems more in keeping with Kanan's fighting style who we saw draw his blaster along with his lightsaber when fighting the Inquisitor during the "Gathering Forces" episode. Maybe Kanan helps Ezra build it or the design just reflects the influence of Kanan's teaching.

 

OK if its a blaster... where's the trigger? Where does the laser bolt come from? Is it possible that its designed that way so that it can be hidden like Kanan hides his and put together when needed?

. I believe the purpose of Kanan's lightsaber coming apart like that is solely to aid in some way with concealing what it really is. Ezra's has the added functionality of actually being used as a blaster from what has been said about it. Kanan built his before concealment was necessary so dual use was probably not even considered at the time.

 

In my opinion, Ezra using a blaster/lightsaber combo makes sense. A lightsaber is not an easy weapon to use effectively, and in the hands on an unskilled user, it can be more dangerous to the person using it than it is to their enemy. Effective use of a light saber takes years of practice, and using a blaster until you are proficient with the saber makes sense. Lets not forget that even Luke Skywalker still used a blaster on the death star, even though he had a lightsaber attached to his belt, as that was the weapon he was most proficient with at the time. Ezra is still in the very early stages of his training, and can barely block a slowly thrown rock with a lightsaber. It is clear that his slingshot is not an effective weapon, and that he needs to be armed with something more lethal, but in his current state of training, a lightsaber is not his best choice. The combo will give him the option to use a blaster or lightsaber to defend himself, and will also aid him in going undetected as a Jedi. To me, its seems like the writers actually though this one through, and came up with a workable solution.

Forgive my cynicism, but I wonder how long it'll be before those energy shields turn up in the Saga at some stage as well?

Wouldn't the balance be off when he uses it as a lightsaber. It's ugly but effective I guess.

 

I worried when I saw the length of the handle and the limited space, but after seeing him swing it around, Ezra shouldn't have any comfort issues holding that lightsaber. And the stun blaster attachment is actually pretty neat.

Yeah well, unfortunately, the article on wikipedia says that rather than full fledge blaster, the saberblaster shots stun the enemy.
So no, the fan's popular and loved slingshot stays

 

If so, I hope he can at least temporarily stun the Inquisitor
