Just got my copy Imperial Assault. Played one mission. Seems like this is going to be a super fun game. A bit of a pain to learn and organize AT FIRST. But Once I settled in we had a blast. I kinda wussed out and let my players win the first match. Mostly because I let them use a Strength check to destroy some transmitters, and latter I realized that wasn't allowed. But it was getting late and I didn't want to check the book, and I was glad they won the first map...Anyway, cool game. I hope to run throught the campaign a few times and maybe get one of the expansions.

Anyone else miss "Wizards of the Coast" Star Wars Miniatures?

I love them, ok the game itself is just a little skirmish combat squad, but the Miniatures are SSSSSSOOOOOO CCCCCOOOOOOL

It's good stuff. The only criticism I might level against FF's miniature games at this point is that they tend to be a bit rule and setup heavy. Takes a while to get going and to get a full handle on all the rules. Still love them of course, they just take a bit more prep than some miniature games. I'm having a blast painting the Imperial Assault minis though.

Yeah. The first time I tried to play, we ran out of time before I even got it set up! I think they could have organized they're booklets a little better to get the learning curve down a bit. There's way too much going back and forth between all the booklets. BUT once I got the hang of it, it was all good. I feel like they did a great job of this with the Edge of the Empire Beginner Box and X-Wing. I was expecting to be able to just pop the top and play in about 15 minutes. No way. I ended up watching a bunch of You Tube to wrap my head around the rules.

Yeah I'm trying to find time to paint my minis...I've never painted minis before, so I've got to get all my supplies together.
    I've been watching Sorastro's tutorials.

They seem pretty legit to a beginner like me.

Yeah, Sorastro's tutorials are what got me into miniature painting in the first place. Great stuff, the guys like the British Bob Ross of miniature painting.

They can seem a little rule heavy. As the owner of a game, you're going to have to have a decent knowledge of all the errata. But I've found that Imperial Assault is incredibly easy to teach to friends. Shameless plug, I've got some tutorials for various Star Wars games in a thread on these forums, if you'd be interested.

X-Wing, and to a lesser degree Armada, also seem to be pretty simple to explain, though difficult to master. Rebellion can be pretty tough to nail the rules down for, though.

I get the rules alright, it's just that they aren't nearly as quick to master and play as some other games. Me and my friend play Armada from time to time for instance, and since he has never sat down and spent time with the rulebook the way I do, he still is terrible at building his fleet and matching strategies with all the various weapon, officer and commander cards etc.

I still enjoy them of course, but I would say that they push the rule complexity about as far as I would want to take it for board games. If they add much more, I think the games would become so unwieldy as to be better handled as video games. Additionally, their rules heavy approach, while not insurmountable for new players, does make them a little more intimidating for friends of mine that aren't as familiar with that kind of game.

I guess what made me realize this more keenly was the fact that I recently purchased the Mars Attacks miniature game, which is much lighter on the rules and is therefore much more popular with my circle of friends. The fact that it has much less set up time and fewer complex rules to grasp has definitely seems to add to its appeal with my friends.

That's not to say that I am retiring my FFG Star Wars games, far from it, just an observation on what seems to appeal more to casual gamers like many of my friends.

That's fair. In the grand scheme of all tabletop games, FFG games are still pretty heavy, but they could definitely be worse. I think what makes them stand out so much is that Star Wars is obviously an IP that has wide appeal, on and off the table. As such, it attracts players who might have very little tabletop experience, as well as players who regularly hold 15+ hour sessions of The Civil War.

If you guys haven't heard of it yet, one of my favorite podcasts is the Order 66 podcast which has been covering Star Wars RPG for years. It's an excellent show if you want to dive into the lore, gameplay mechanics, and possibility's of FFG's Star Wars system. They haven get Sam Witwer on the show every once in awhile since he's an old school RPG'er from the WEG days.

You can find it here (Although, it's probably better to look up "Order 66" on itunes): http://start.d20radio.com/home/the-order-66-podcast

Just pre-ordered the Rise of the Empire expansion for Rebellion. Can't wait till it comes!

Also, I'm very excited for the Heart of the Empire waves to come soon, too. Love that Rebels is getting some love in Imperial Assault.

Here's the FFG preview of it. There are a few other articles you can link to from there.

Basically, new units, new leaders, entirely new mission decks (you still use all projects, all starting missions, and all missions with leader icons on them for all deck configurations) some new objectives.

Maybe the biggest change is an entirely revamped combat system. Only played one game with it so far, but combat was a lot more fun.

It's pretty cool. It's called Cinematic Combat, because it basically gives you abilities if you have units in the system. For instance, if you have a snowspeeder in a system, you can play a one time Tow Cable card to take out an ATAT.

It's really similar to the House leader cards in one of FFG's other titles, the Game of Thrones board game.

Finally got my copy of Heart of the Empire! The new minis and missions look so cool!

Also, shoutout to the cool lady at the post office who was kind enough to go back and get my box so I didn't have to wait until tomorrow's delivery. She's the real MVP.

Finally received my Ghosts of Dathomir sourebook for Force and Destiny. I have been running a SW:RPG F&D campaign with the same core group for about a year now. On off nights we play the starfighters miniature game (and interchange minis for RPG). I enjoy how a lot of FF products can work with their variety of games (minus the dice).
