He's intriguing, but he's still such a cypher that it's hard to really judge him yet. It'd be like trying to judge Sheev just from his one scene in ESB, doesn't really work.

Luke Skywalker, but he is not on this list and Leia/Lor San Tekka are not on this list either.
Interesting that Captain Phasma made it. (I guess the chrome armor helped alot to get a spot)
    Her character got advertised >

To be honest > Captain Toy is a empty shell - G.Christie got wasted.

Kylo Ren. Fantastic, complex and nuanced character who is both intimidating and vulnerable at the same time.

For me, the two best characters were Finn and Han Solo, thanks to the performances of John Boyega and Harrison Ford.

it was a tough decision of who to put there. But I figured Phasma had more screen time then the rest.

how can you even tell? she had three lines.

she was unfortunately just ill-conceived and not made use of. hopefully they will rectify that.

I hope so too. But those three lines were pretty bad, and her movement was hilarious. That's not how an accomplished military commander walks and holds her weapon! :p They slowed her movement down in the second teaser for a reason. Because it looked more realistic that way. Really, my only real petty gripe wth The Force Awakens. And they did cut her from a number of scenes. They didn't even show her on Takodana, which is strange. We could have seen her walk or raise her weapon, a one or two second shot cut into the battle. Nope.

It was a tough call but in the end I went with Kylo Ren.

His design is pretty awesome, both the outfit and that lightsaber, I like the more medieval aesthetic they're going with for this trilogy which is also why I have high hopes for the Knights of Ren. I like that his character is very flawed, I find these types of characters more interesting, and that he is borderline insane. When I first saw TFA I reacted like most people did when he revealed himself and became much more emotional, which was "what a punk ass b***h", but later with the bridge/Han death scene it was quite clear that Driver was purposely portraying a very divided character. For example I thought the mask voice modulator was the primary reason why his voice sounded so deep and without it he sounded weak and fragile but when he utters the words "Thank you" to Han you can hear a deeper and more confident voice. Basically I thought Adam Driver did very well in how he portrayed the character.

He got a bit too humiliated in this film, the tantrums belittled him a little even if they were an interesting way of expressing his volatility, and Rey's prowess with the force made him look a bit like a chump but I think that's more a problem with her character than his.

Finn was a very close second for me, he had some great scenes especially the one in Maz's castle, but, while I liked some of his humour, I thought there was a bit too much of it from Finn which would indicate that he's the comic relief character, hopefully not though. Overall, I feel I like Finn at the moment because of where he could go and what he could do, the potential in his background, rather than what he currently is. Therefore I chose Kylo because I liked him as he was in TFA and I think he also has great potential in terms of story direction.

what scenes was she cut from? i was surprised that she really didn't have anything extra in the script or the book that i can recall.

i agree she's very problematic. i just don't blame it on Christie for the moment. she's clearly capable of pulling off "badass" from her work on GOT.

i think too much is made of his volatile emotional state (the memes and all that). but i do agree it would have been nice to let him do just one thing right. he really kinda failed at everything.

Well, I am 100% sure that she was on the Takodana set, was filmed and even had an extensive photoshoot by a women which could have come straight out of Roald Dahl's witches. :p I was suprised when I saw the movie that they cut her from the Takodana sequence entirely.

Edit: They also cut this scene, even though it all looked awesome and sexy...despite all the force induced collapses and stuff:

Yes, the emo Kylo Ren stuff that is going around, while amusing, is quite detrimental to his character and a shame really. He's meant to be late 20s to early 30s for Christ's sake not an emotional teenager. As for him failing....yeah he did look a bit incompetent but that's more down to how Rey was portrayed than Kylo. I mean she resisted his mind reading and then escaped under his nose, it was meant to show how powerful Rey was but instead it came off as Kylo looking weak. So much so that we have people explaining this away as Kylo not having a great deal of training, when he's likely been training for over a decade if not more, and having no saber skills despite the visual dictionary praising his swordsmanship and him actually looking quite skilled in the film itself. We shouldn't have to be bigging up the villain for the next film but we have to with Kylo.

i don't think it's the fight at the end that's the problem with Ren. that's easily explained (for me): he's wounded, he's in shock, and he's trying to catch her, not kill her. he was never going to win that fight.

his real screw-ups are all the things he does strategically (or with lack of strategy): killing Lor San Tekka, taking Rey instead of BB-8, ignoring Snoke's orders about destroying BB-8, etc. all of which is compounded by his distraction about his father, distraction about Rey, etc.

i think he's pretty old, really, to be so unstable and untrained. but i accept that all of this was done deliberately. i expect in the next film he'll come back on point and it's Rey who's going to get torn down.

Sure, when looked at sensibly the ending of the duel makes sense but the fact that we even have to explain why Kylo lost at all is the problem. If this was a stand alone film it probably wouldn't be a problem but as it is part of a saga then we feel the need to explain Kylo's ineptitude so that he can remain a more challenging prospect.

Yes, these moments are good examples of his incompetence but I also think they are there to demonstrate how torn he is, dangerously so. For example, his obsession with finding Luke rather than making sure others don't find him. Snoke just doesn't want Luke in the game but Kylo has a real interest in finding him, to kill him probably but we don't know.

In fairness the film never says that he is untrained just that his training is not complete. Snoke's statement has been taken by many to mean that Kylo has had very little training which is probably rubbish.

I also expect Kylo to come back more composed, but no less conflicted, and intimidating but then who doesn't at this stage? Unless Disney intends for him to become one of those villains who is constantly thwarted and always screaming with rage.

i didn't need it explained, but yeah, apparently a lot of other people did.

completely agree! it's incompetence to the FO maybe, but it's brilliant to his character development. people either want to tear him down for killing Han and being inept or else they totally empathize with his struggle and his failures ~ you can't ask for more than that in terms of character interest.

sorry, he obviously has training. i didn't articulate that well. i mean his imbalance: he's physically capable, but his mind is unfocused. i feel like Snoke has deliberately given him a certain sets of skills that are useful (i don't think his lightsaber skills are at all lacking, and he demonstrates a lot of other strengths in the Force), but prevents him from centering or self-actualizing in order to keep him off-balance and under Snoke's control.

i can't imagine him devolving into a one-dimensional rage monster. i completely agree with "composed, but no less comflicted".

and in case there's any doubt (i feel like i've been tearing him down this whole conversation), he's my favorite character too.

Finn, hands down, he brought humor, action and drama, and was just cool.
