One of the best big budget superhero movies I saw in the past few years was James Mangold's The Wolverine. While Jackman's Wolverine was the main character that the story was about, the cast was rounded out with great roles for women like Yukio, Mariko, Viper, and Jean Grey in substantial roles.

No typical "Smurfette Principle" (look it up) nonsense there.

The word "agenda" has a negative connotation now I guess; understanding the changing demographics of Star Wars fans is important and definitely women shouldn't feel excluded from the franchise, but KK's comments still make me wonder about Rey's character.

she's self-sufficient, independent, strong female character

You know those "strong independent female characters" that started appearing in the 90s that had no character traits other than they were independent and didn't need a man, but ended up being love interests for the main character by the end of the film anyway? They're basically the worst characters ever. It's pretty much as demeaning as a benign, subservient 50s-style housewife with no depth. Over compensating for past mistakes =/= correcting them.

Not all good characters are strong and independent. You Can Count On Me is a good example of a movie with a great female character that is both in control of her life and yet very dependent on the people in it. Same with Rogue from Bryan Singer's X-Men.

You don't do something in art because you feel like you have to in order to appease some social standard or quota, you do it because it makes sense. No token characters.

We don't need more "strong" females in big movies, we need more interesting females.

That being said, no I don't think Rey will be this kind of Mary Sue character, Abrams & Kasdan would never willingly write such a boring lead.

True the word agenda does come off a bit negative, but KK has made it a point to bring this up a lot in the past year. So it's obviously something she is pushing.

I just hope that she isn't without flaws and has someplace to grow, otherwise she will get pretty boring pretty quickly. Rumors suggest that she may not be particularly too keen on the idea of walking down the hero's path, but that's not necessarily a weakness and more of a form of wisdom. Take Luke's character for instance. In ANH he was argumentative, naive, whiny, and even stubborn. Then he became one of the wisest Jedi in the galaxy, to the point where he could almost match Yoda, and certainly Ben, with his wisdom. In TFA it appears he has a lot more on his shoulders (has he gone crazy? or is that just an in-universe rumor?) so it seems as though we will see Luke do some more evolving over the next few movies. Finn on the other hand seems arrogant and trigger happy, and I'd bet his arc will counter those qualities. In the trailer we see him wielding Anakin/Luke's lightsaber, and there is absolutely no way he is ready to wield such a weapon. My guess? That battle will end badly for him, and he will learn from his mistakes.

I just love the Cantina. People coming together and bringing views without a bunch of nonsense. I have got more concrete and facts about this film than anywhere on the net.

That's why my point about females was that it should have them as characters with dense traits instead of having them stand there for the sake of them, similar to Tomb a Raider with Angelina Jolie or Pepper Potts from the first Iron Man, or the dancer from ROTJ who tries to kill Jabba.

I'm thinking of having a viewing party at my condo in SoCal in CA before TFA with some drinks and talk about Star Wars in a respectful way. Who'd be interested?!

It would be where. We would watch one movie, discuss it for 10 minutes, and then watch another one with a nap between each trilogy. For a little over 12 hours.

Oh come on! We can periscope it for this website and just discuss! I am a good cook...and we could even make money for charity as well! What if I host something small for us! Let's talk, discuss, round table, get to know each other in person and watch our love of Star Wars! I think it would be cool. Could*

I live in Irvine. Culver City isn't too far, at least for me. I'm thinking of...having 10-12 people
Over, we have food and drinks, but we periscope and people who come over pay and I give the money to charity of your choice, and Star Wars news net gets credit and we all do good in the sense of Star Wars.

Well, there you go! I'm thinking in a few weeks. Bring your costumes, light sabers, and we can geek out for a weekend. I'll even talk to John Boyega and Daisy Ridley if they're in town. (I don't know Poe tho) :( )

Yoda was making excuses, and ANH gives us "Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough."
