    Some really good stuff here.

Mark used Lee Marvin from the "Big Red One" as an example of the new Luke. . . this is very interesting and definitely dispels any hopefulness in Luke at this point. If memory serves me, new members of Marvin's unit are constantly killed when they join the group. Marvin is also a very torn yet driven individual. He does quite a bit that he would not be proud of outside of "war."

Very, very interesting that this is the name Mark dropped referencing inspiration from where Luke is at. Marvin was a seriously emotionally f'd-up dude, yet an f-d up dude that is perfectly understandable and can be admired in a certain light.

Also interesting that he confirms some info that was as yet unconfirmed in TFA: "you know what fate befell the Jedi Academy, where Luke was preparing a new generation of knights, and that his nephew turned to the Dark Side of the Force and murdered other disciples. I guess Luke was dumbfounded and broken, which forced him to go into exile." . . . but then he states that this is only a little part of his issues. . .

Lastly, definitely looks like he has some action sequences and he was informed of this during TFA. He has been training for 5 years to get into shape for them.

    CANT !!!!

    WAIT !!!!

I'm wondering what made Luke so depressed. Some new information on the Jedi?

I'm sure his nephew turning to the dark side and idolizing Vader + the slaughtering of his entire fledgling Jedi order had an impact.

I just went back to the novelization and I think you have some of the details wrong regarding what Han told Rey and Finn.

He didn't say dark side or murdered, simply that one boy, an apprentice, turned against him and destroyed it all.

He just said that Luke felt responsible and walked away from everything and that the people that knew him best thought he went on a personal quest looking for the first Jedi temple.

Not dumbfounded or broken, not exile. Those are heavily loaded words that overstate what we know so far.

However, wholly agreed on the action sequences and not being able to wait. We have quotes from several sources now which point to this clearly, most interesting the bit from Oscar Isaac about the (not an exact quote here) mind blowing scenes where Luke fulfills all of your childhood fantasies about what he could become.

I might still be wrong, but I have always interpreted Luke's "exile" as not him going into hiding or detaching from it all, I figured that he went to seek answers about the Force.

Never read the book, but what I wrote regarding this is a quote from Mark - not my own interpretation. Its Mark's interpretation of where Luke is at. That, to me, is far more illuminating and profound than anything from any other source . . . other than maybe the director.

It shows the actor's mindset of where the character is at.

If what Mark is saying is where he had to place himself emotionally in order to "be" Luke, it is likely both.

Luke being "dumbfounded" and "broken" is why he went looking for answers.

He definitely isn't hiding. He is searching.

Fair enough, I read that as your words and not what Mark said about preparing to act out the role. In that context I have no issues at all with what you wrote, and agree that if that is what Mark is saying, it does provide some valuable insight.

@Lazlo do you have any links of Oscar Isaac saying that? I can't find any links to him talking about being on set with Luke or Mark.

Oscar Isaac, at 38 the senior member of the core cast’s “new kids” (Driver is 33, and Ridley and Boyega are in their mid-20s), is old enough to remember as a child revering Luke Skywalker. “So to be there, and to watch Mark revisit Luke, particularly in these scenes we were shooting towards the end of the film, was bizarre and jaw-dropping,” he told me. “It’s like when you see an old band re-unite and go on the road, and they don’t quite hit those high notes anymore—though in this situation it’s completely the opposite. It’s the fulfillment of where your imagination would take you when you imagine where Luke would go, or what he’s become.”

Thanks for digging that quote out! I've read this, but completely forgot about it. Sounds epic indeed... :) I want it to feel exactly as Oscar described.

That's telling. He will show up to fight in the 3rd act on crait.

Maybe after having been cranky and "off" the first 2/3 of the film.

Remember the leaked Film Score track list a few pages back?

One of the last tracks, maybe 3rd or 4th from the end, was titled "Return of the Jedi."
