    I didn't go up far enough to see the context.. but i'm guessing there is mention of something 'fan servicy' in the recent rumor/leek stuff?

    I might be the only droid in this galaxy that doesn't think that the remote droid scene in TFA was fan service.
    the remote droid was already on board.. so it hasn't been added for fan service. you can almost class the droid being there as continuity.
    i'd perhaps call it a hat-tip to ANH.. but not fan service.

    fan service is a character walking by that's from some comic that only a small few have read. things like that


    all I've heard in the last few months is "how will JJ bring the whole saga together?"
    Finn picking up an item on the falcon that was part of a big scene from the original movie in 77 - one of the most famous movies of all time? not fan service in my opinion.

    we all see these things differently i guess, and i'm not sure it really matters. fan service or not... funny or not. :)

    Actually now that I think about it. Why was it still on the falcon. Why didn't Luke pick it up for use in his Jedi academy? But we're slowly getting off-topic.

    I find this whole topic of the funny scene with the remote on the Falcon in TFA to be comical (see what I did there) because to me it is really a very minor detail... but I have to agree with @Maximus ... I think as much as it was humorous, it actually adds to the continuity and is not "bad" fan service, if it can be called fan service at all.

    As for the humor of that scene and in the saga generally, I agree that comedy is certainly subjective... But I challenge anyone to provide an example of a "bad joke" in ANH. That was part of the beauty of that whole movie was that so much of the humor landed so well... and it is also one of the main reasons other "comedic" moments in the saga landed so flat for me. I still think that the OT got it all mostly right, although I must admit that it slopes downward through some of the teddy bear moments in ROTJ. When George picked the saga back up again, he continued that slide down with all the infantile "poo doo" style jokes in TPM. I think TFA struck a very good balance with regard to humor... certainly not perfect (like ANH) but certainly still in the OT range of humor that landed well.

    Agreed. I enjoyed TLJ overall and thought Rian did a nice job with the more serious and "touching" aspects of the story that were quite poignant. However, I think much of TLJ's charm was tainted by some of the humor that fell very flat for me. The best example: Every time I have tried to re-watch it, the scene between Luke and Rey where she "can feel" the Force, which is Luke tickling her with a feather, I cringe as badly as I cringed at any PT attempts at humor (or its creepy romance for that matter).

    Sorry, a bit off topic, but I am all in favor of the kind of rumored flashback in TRoS or nostalgic moments like the remote in TFA, whether they are called fan service or otherwise, so long as the humor doesn't seem sophomoric and stupid... or the "nostalgia" doesn't actually detract from the characters or the moment. Based on TFA, I certainly have more confidence in JJ than I would have had in Rian Johnson (or, sadly, George) had he accepted the offer to do TRoS.

    There are a few options, I think:

    1) After Luke tells Obi Wan that he wants to learn about the force in ANH, they go to Obi Wan's house and get some things before going to Mos Eisley., including the training remote.
    2) It's not a training remote. It's a defense drone/droid/device that Han had on the ship and Obi Wan just used it for training.
