If this is to happen, it’ll have to be the hardest decision in the entire saga (and future ones)

How do you kill Luke Skywalker? The man who destroyed the first Death Star and defeated the near-ultimate evil in Sidious and Vader. They can’t have him go out in some cheap attack (attack from behind/the shadows) or surely not in a lightsaber duel?

The answer I have mostly seen is a sacrifice to defeat the evil and ensure the light emerges on top – but that doesn’t seem a satisfying end? If anything, it’s too cliché (even in Star Wars –Obi Wan, VADER, maybe Han?)

Does Luke even have to die? Can he just retire into the galaxy? Or do you think it is necessary for him to die in order to further the saga?

I’d be really interested to hear the Cantina’s thoughts on this!

IMO Luke hasn't to die in the sequel trilogy. But if Lucasfilm decides to kill him of, then it will most certainly happen in EP9.

For me, the only satisfying way to do this, is:
Luke sacrifices his own life to save Kylo Ren. Then Kylo will emerge from the dark back to the light. As Ben Solo he will defeat Snoke and end this conflict.

Luke doesn't need to die for this ST to end well.

and i have a feeling his successors will continue to need him to keep themselves on the right path--
at least for the short-term future as they mature into their roles.

At the end of Episode 8 you have the following events take place:
Rey vs Kylo, Kylo destroys Rey in the battle she loses an eye, Luke destroys Kylo removing his arm with ease even dodging swings with his lightsaber not even out, Luke fights Snoke intensely showing that Snoke is no match , Luke stabs Snoke but Snoke is unaffected due to his immortality (because he's Plaguies) Snoke strikes luke while the blade is inside of him.

In episode 9 Luke's force ghost will help Rey and eventually Kylo to defeat Snoke and free thier family
from their dark lineage once and for all.

I think a compelling turn would be for Leia to slowly become more disenfranchised with the Senate & constant war.
She would develop & lead a separate faction that will ultimately destroy the First Order but her thirst for power & total control will force her to showdown with Luke(and maybe Rey).
I think in EP 8, Kylo & the new Benecio Del Toro villian will conspire to stop Snoke. This chaos & division will cause a huge mess.
General Hux & Plasma will get waxed to be pushed to the back just like TFA.
For Leia to kill Luke & turn to the Dark Side would be unexpected but I'm not sure Disney/JJA/Lucas would go that far. Plus, honestly I don't think Carrie Fisher could do the stunts/serious drama that it would require to be the main villian(evil).

I have a feeling that he won't die but instead lead the Jedi Academy again at the end of Episode 9. However, if Lucasfilm/Disney will ever want to continue the saga beyond Episode 9 (Episodes 10 to 12 - which was part of George Lucas' original proposal), then it might be an idea to kill of Luke so that they won't need to recast Mark Hamill in his older years... which is harsh but practical. (luke)

    My thoughts on this.....

I think eventually ALL the original cast will die in this trilogy, makes perfect sense and allows things to move on and the new characters to develop and take center stage, leading the franchise in the next trilogy. I belive/hope C3PO will be the remanant thru out the entire Saga.

Now killing the great hero Luke Skywalker is a tricky bit but there are so many good choices to do it and remember that graveyards are fill with irreplaceable persons. Here's a list with some possibilities just pick your favorite or write a new one:

    1. Luke walk away, Dune approach again, after all evil is destroyed Luke will simply walk away into the void of the galaxy, alone, and not to be seen again, perhaps taking R2 with him.
    2. Snoke Kills Luke, Snoke is a uber sith capable of destroying Luke and giving the right motivation to Rey or Kylo kill Snoke afterwards.
    3. Continue the Deaths in the Family and Kylo kills Luke, making Kylo the worst villain in SW history just before Rey cut him down avenging her master.
    4. Sacrifice, Luke kills himself or allows someone to kill him in order to save/protect someone else or a greater good, á la Obi Wan.
    5. Crazy plot twist, Rey kills Luke in order to avenge her grandparent Palpatine, in this case Kylo Ren is forced to turn good and save family honour.
    6. Darth Vader approach, Luke becames the new Darh Vader figure after surviving the battle were he kills Kylo and embraces his new master Snoke, becoming the new villain of the next trilogy. (story comes full circle?)

I'd love for it to be option 1. It would be a great way to go, and be a good ending for the character. The only issue I guess is the ambiguity of it, never seeing the end of Luke will leave questions for any next trilogy (mentioning he died of old age in a crawl would be ridiculous!)

Hamill is in no way old, but logically it would be sensible to have some finality for the character. If Hamill were to pass away (GOD FORBID, Hamill will live forever - no one takes Mark/Luke) with questions unanswered it would leave the story group with a forced (and unsatisfactory) decision

I think Luke the character will be smoke checked in either EP 8 or maybe 9. He could be a Force Ghost in who knows how many future Star Wars films. I think Disney & Lucasfilm might turn Luke Skywalker into a Highlander type figure once he defeats Snoke but because actor Mark Hamill is only mortal, it's more likely Disney & the producers will continue to push newer, younger(i.e. more $$$ to make off with) actors.
Daisy Ryder is a real gem. ;)
Oscar Isaac was good but under-used. John Bordega had a few short falls but he can grow into his Finn role.
Han's death opened the door for OT era characters to get dusted.
Luke could be eternal in the final film but a death with honor seems better.

It wouldn't make sense for him to die because it's not like he's being redeemed or anything as far as we know which is a major theme in Star Wars (redemption) so he'd probably die peacefully but it wouldn't even have to be on camera even as it could happen after the events of this trilogy .

I'd have lots of arguments on my point of view of why they shouldn't kill Luke but seeing what TFA did, I would just say, How do you kill Luke? In the same lame way that they killed Han Solo. A man who was right there besides Luke and who if it weren't for him, Luke would have never completed his destiny just got tossed down a Death Star 3.0 shaft. Then, to ad insult to injury, they let a few characters moan him for a few seconds before they happily went on with their lives like if Han was yesterdays garbage. I felt more pity and emotion with how they handeled Nanta's death in ROTJ than what they did to Han.

have a feeling luke and leia will live until episode IX- and then all hell will break loose. i imagine episode IX to be the big bang finale of all 9 star wars films.. and i believe both luke and leia will die in the film. basically we'll be crying from the crawl until the ending credits

I do not know but I know how Leia should die and I know how Kylo should die. After a battle with Snoke, Luke is weakened and injured, Kylo begins to use Force Lightening on the injured Luke, this is where Leia steps between them, absorbing and turning the Lightening back on Kylo, Leia uses the Darkside to kill Kylo and dies in the act of Saving her brother and avenging her husband with Dieing with the Taint of the darkside and having killed her own lost son.

This will leave Luke and Rey to rebuild the Jedi Order and of course Rey to have babies to continue the Skywalker family.
    --- Double Post Merged, May 20, 2016, Original Post Date: May 20, 2016 ---
Luke should be laid to rest in a new Jedi Temple built in his honor on Tatooine. C3P0 and R2D2 stand guard over his Tomb while C3PO also inform visitors on the Story of Luke Skywalker. This new Jedi Temple, Force Tree and Force light around Luke's Tomb somehow through the force turn Tatooine into a lush green planet.

I dont agree, I think is has be done on camera. It would be way to insulting to both the character Mark Hamill himself and the fans to just read about Luke's death in a damn opening crawl. Luke deserves an onscreen death as much as Obi Wan and Han did. Killing Luke offscreen would feel like his character was not importent enough. Besides they had the chance to kill Luke and the rest of the OT cast offscreen when they wrote TFA, and apparently they decided not to. So Luke will die onscreen, one way or another without a doubt.

What I meant was more of an interpretation to his death as in him finally having peace and walking into the sunset...imagine the last few seconds of the series finale of LOST.

Luke should go out with a literal bang. Luke should turn Ben Solo back to the light side. They all attack Snoke, however he has found a way to deflect all of their attacks with assistance from an old Sith artifact. Realising they stand no chance against Snoke, Luke tells the heroes to leaves and then proceeds to convert all his body matter into force energy and generates an immense explosion, thus destroying Snoke and his ship.

Luke has been in a garbage compactor, hand cut off, stuff thrown at him, fallen to his demise on cloud city to be rescued by Leia, chewie and lando, killed a rancor, avoided the sarlaac while saving everyone and has been electrocuted.

He cannot be killed. He's a survivor Jedi bad-ass
