How does the Death Star move?

How do you feel about the idea of the Death Star making a hyperspace jump?

I was explaining the Death Star to a group of kids this summer, and I explained that the Death Star enables the Emperor to rule by fear and threat of power. Since it has the capability to destroy a whole planet, they can hold an entire civilization hostage...

And it suddenly occurred to me that the Death Star must be able to make the jump to light speed.

To my primitive Earthling mind, if I may say so, the problem of how to destroy a given planet is not nearly as difficult and complex as the task of arriving within firing range of given planet.

At any rate: For the first time, I considered the Death Star as a vessel and not as a station. I believe this conclusion is strongly implied, almost by definition, if you consider the function that the Death Star is intended to perform.

Right away I had difficulty imagining the Death Star jumping to light speed. Seemed like an odd proposition. I have been to the wookiepedia page about this, and it would seem that, according to cannon, the Death Star is indeed capable of doing this.

I mean, think of the applications! This is an apparatus whereby objects the size of small moons are sent leaping through hyperspace. You could, in theory, attach one to the surface of Endor and destroy the rebel fleet by "jumping" the forest moon into it. No one saw that coming.

Obviously everyone from the emperor to nerf-herders refer to the Death Star as a battlestation, which all educated people now know to be a polite myth. It was never designed to be any such thing.

I just wanted to share my personal thoughts about this quirk of the Star Wars Universe.

    This is my first thread.

I recall there being cut images on some old reddit post that showed a dot based diagram of the Death Star that was cut from the film, but it did show a huge engine that looked like the Millennium Falcon's.

I always assumed the Death Star had a hyperdrive but no thrusters. That's why it could go from Alderaan to Yavin so quickly (it got there right after the Falcon - the fastest hunk of junk in the Galaxy), but it had to wait 30 minutes for the planet to get out of its line of sight so it could fire at the Rebel base on Yavin's moon.

if it does not have thrustsers then that begs the question, how accurate is the the hyper-drive? here on earth we built a probe that landed on an asteroid flying through space! so its no stretch of the imagination that the Death Star could land on a dime. even then i expect they would need a taxiing system to travel short distances.

Having a hyperdrive makes sense. It has to get around somehow.

That or is has a really powerful tractor beam that sucks planets to it! Mhuhahaha!

It seems to move forward we saw that as it moved towards Yavin IV it did carry 123 hyperdrive field generators so it could get from one end of the galaxy to the other.
