We’re roughly three weeks from the world premiere and four weeks from the general release of The Last Jedi!

So, ahead of time, I thought it would be interesting to gauge expectations for the film.

Obviously, we haven’t seen the film yet, but I’m sure that we all have some sort of expectation for how good or bad it will be: will it be the best Star Wars live-action film to date? The worst? Average?

To add some additional context, I think it would be interesting if you included some rationalisation for your opinion (if you can), and to also include your own personal ranking of the eight (canon) live-action Star Wars films released to date. I think it would also be healthy to discuss others’ rankings to deepen our appreciation for the films.

Here’s a template to set you on your way:

I expect The Last Jedi to be [insert place in or range of rankings here].

From best to worst, I would personally rank the canon live-action Star Wars films as follows:
    1.
    2.
    3.
    4.
    5.
    6.
    7.
    8.

    I can absolutely respect that!

My own personal rankings are constantly changing with every viewing of a Star Wars film that I have, and I don’t tend to go “Wow, I think this might be one of the best ones” until I’m 10+ viewings and it’s months after release.

Though, I’m still of course interested in hearing your opinions, such as about the good and bad parts of the films so far (if any), and what you think TLJ might have learned from what’s come before it? :)

I don't rank Star Wars films, it doesn't make sense to me. I can pick 2 or 3 favourites, but after that it becomes genuinely impossible for me to tell which one I prefer over the other. However, I expect TLJ to land in the absolutely highest tier. I can see it becoming my favourite if it fulfills my expectations.

Im very reserved. I'm not one to be pulled into things especially by it been classed as 'different'. To me that sounds like a pre made excuse for me. Plus the whole feel from the trailers is not getting me excited at all. The tone feels completely depressing. In the released call sheets in regards to TFA Ach-To was described as 'magic mountain'. But to me Rian has not made it magic, its like how I walk my dog first thing on morning. Maybe it where I live, there is a lot greenery I live by some woods, so to me. It just feels 'normal'. It doesn't feel like 'star wars'. As for the story, well I know we don't know it. However, from the 'gossip' and rumors. It doesn't sound exciting its sounds a bit bland and perhaps there is an element of shock value. If that is the case. I don't like that, mainly because its a one movie watch for me. Once you get it and gone through the build up. It will only impact once, I doubt I'd watch it over again. That's not just Star Wars, that's to any film.

I think its going to be a middle of the road film for me so between 4-6 for me. But like I said, we know nothing of the plot, it could be amazing. I'm just been honest on the material we have so far. It could be vastly different once we get to the cinema. Its not a lost cause by any means. Its a wait and see for me.

I'm not a person that's easily disappointed. It's rare for me to actually watch something and say, "Wow that was bad". Even films/shows that are generally regarded as some of the worst ever made, I find some level of enjoyment in. With that said, I have my expectations set at an astronomical level. I have hope that it'll be the best Star Wars movie just as I had hope that The Force Awakens and Rogue One would be the best Star Wars movie. We've heard for months now how interesting and different the story is, and while I can see how some may think that might be more of a warning/excuse rather than praise... I think the fact that Lucasfilm gave Rian Johnson the reigns to create a whole new trilogy speaks more volume than any actor/actress talking about the film could.

My current ranking of the films is:

    1. The Empire Strikes Back
    2. A New Hope
    3. The Force Awakens
    4. Return of the Jedi
    5. Revenge of the Sith
    6. Rogue One
    7. Attack of the Clones
    8. The Phantom Menace

I don't know what to expect about the movie, because, unlike with The Force Awakens, we don't really have a basic plot to go by. We have "the story is continuing." That's all we really know. In fact, to be honest, this has been a mild concern of mine since the second trailer was released. I hope I'm wrong, and I probably am, but judging from the trailers (besides the initial teaser), it looks like this film is a bunch of plots loosely tied together.

When we watched trailers for The Force Awakens, we knew the following:

    • it picked up after the original trilogy
    • a neo-Empire has emerged
    • the original trilogy heroes would be back
    • Kylo Ren would continue Vader's legacy
    • Finn or Rey would become a Jedi and fight the emergent threat
With The Last Jedi, we know the following:

    • it will pick up after The Force Awakens
    • Rey will receive Jedi training
    • Kylo will still be conflicted
    • Luke's views on the Force have changed
    • The First Order's mad
I dunno. Maybe I'm missing something. I expect the film to be good. But because we seem to lack much of a plot premise anchor, it's really hard for me to judge it before seeing it.

As an addendum to my other post, I can rank the films so far. Numbers grouped together mean I like them about the same.

    1. The Empire Strikes Back
    2. Rogue One
    3. A New Hope
4-5-6. Return of the Jedi / Revenge of the Sith / The Force Awakens
7-8. The Phantom Menace / Attack of the Clones

No matter how much LFM likes TLJ, I will lower my expectations, and by doing so if it is really that good I'll be pleasantly surprised.

    1. ANH
    2. TESB
    3. ROTJ
    4.TLJ
    5. RO
    6. AOTC
    7. ROTS
    8. TPM ( even though its at the bottom still like this film allot. I loved Liam's performance of Qui-Gon Jinn and Maul was indeed another great villain that George created and he made up for his swift departure with TCW animated series and Filoni gave him a better death)

Better than TFA, but not to be compared to the originals, prequels, or Rogue one.

LOL NOOOO LOL I can't believe I forgot it! I like Kylo, Rey, and Finn. I would rate TFA above RO because I like Jedi, even though I like RO because it connects with ANH my favorite of them all, but I see all 3 trilogies as one film. I'm really looking forward to Rey's journey.
