    We'll soon find out.

EDIT: On 2nd thought, you're probably right. $2.4B is probably out of range. I DO think it will hit the $2B mark, and $2.1-2.2B is a possibility. I know the thinking ... TFA made so much largely due to the long time gap, which will not be the case for TLJ. I think TLJ will soar on just being such an awesome movie.

I'm actually expecting that it'll be better than TFA for several reasons.

First of all, I'm imagining that the the character development and acting will be more fluid. Now i didn't think that TFA's acting was bad mind you, i just thought that some of Ridley's acting was a bit...I don't know...wooden, I guess.

At any rate, I think now that the cast has had plenty of time to live in their perspective characters bodies and better understand the dynamic and motivations, I expect their acting to be more fluid.

When TFA hit the theaters, I went several times and because I'd waited so long for SW to return, none of the "wooden" mattered...SW was back, and that was all that mattered to me. Now with TLJ about to open, I expect the new faces will have slipped into their perspective characters quite nicely, and aside from that, this will be Carrie Fishers last acting SW performance, and we're getting Luke back, which is going to be HUGE for audiences. Not only do I think that the movie will be better, I think it'll sell more tickets. :)

I've always rated the top movies to be IV and V, with TFA and R1 tied for third, but I think (or at least am hoping) that TLJ will take #3 in the end.

I'm feeling that TLJ will be a top tier SW movie. It's hard to say whether it'll be the BEST as it's hard to seperate from emotion (TESB always seems untouchable for me based on childhood memories etc., ANH too to an extent). BUT....but, there is a small, niggling part of my admittedly mini brain that worries the movie could be too 'out there' and actually end up just being...average. 85% sure it'll be superb.

    Rankings currently:

    1: TESB
    2: R1
    3: ANH
    4: TFA
    5: ROTS
    6: ROTJ
    7: AOTC
    8: TPM

I think it will be in the top 3. I think each is getting better. The actors seem to agree this one is different. Different can be great. Just have to wait and see.

Frankly, I am training myself not to have expectations and to let Rian Johnson just take me on the ride. I am like Mark Hamill, not liking many things I see (or presume), so I decided not to speculate and let him do his magic. And hope that he can. :)

This is a great thread. I am very optimistic that TLJ is going to be a great movie. As others have said the fact that Rian gets to create a whole new trilogy is a big indicator that Lucasfilm is very pleased with TLJ. Also take into account the fact that Lucasfilm has had issues with many of the other directors/movies and yet there were no problems with TLJ makes me think we are in for something special. While different can be bad at times, the points above may be optimistic that their will be a good different. I think TLJ will finish towards the top of my list which while it can be fluid is currently as follows:

    1a/1b- ESB/ANH-
    2-TFA
    3-RTOJ
    4-ROTS
    5-R1
    6-TPM
    7-AOTC

ESB and ANH are pretty much a tie for me. At any given time I may like one over the other. TPM and ATOC will flop back and forth as well. That being said I like them all.

I think I will love it BUT I have a bad feeling about this....
I think some people or a lot of people might say like they did with the prequels ....

I honestly think this can be the best Star Wars film since ESTB, but I think rogue one will beat it in space battles, hard to top that movie.

I think we will witness multiple emotional lightsber duels, and I pray Luke breaks out the old green sabre for about 10 seconds to kill all knights of ren.

Also would LOVE to see Luke flying the falcon out of his hiding place! Chewie or Luke should inherit the Falcon.

As long as the Falcon makes a major appearance I'm happy (dont dent it this time)

Surpised the majority is for top 3.

Recency bias much? Haha. No, it isn't going to be better than the OT, TFA wasn't either.

OF what I've heard and if it will look, feel and turn out the way I think, it might push ESB and TFA from their shared first place.

At the very worst it's going to be an okay film, like Return of the Jedi or Rogue One. At the very best, it will be David Lynch-directed Return of the Jedi we've never got - a wonderful mixture of weird and familiar.

The reason this is a great thread is it’s going to be interesting/fun to go back after we all see TLJ and see how we felt before and how it matches up. We all should quote our post here after seeing the movie and then give a quick recap of what you think now.

I'm trying to not set any expectations. I'd rather have low expectations in the event the movie turns out great, at least I'll be pleasantly surprised whereas if I have high expectations and the movie turns out to be mediocre, I'll be disappointed. The way I see it, I'm more apt to be letdown by something, so I try not to be set myself up for disappointment. Suffice it to say, I'm a pessimist by nature. I know the movie will more than likely turn out to be good, how good it will be I won't know until I see it.

If you set yourself up for disappointment, you will always walk out of the theatre feeling satisfied.

Because if it does surprise you and turn out to be awesome - Well, there's really nothing to say or complain about, right?
And if it does suck in your opinion, at least you will feel that you knew it was coming.
Plus, even if it turns out to be mediocre or above average, it will still be higher than your expectations.

The fact that RJ has been offered a new trilogy has made it hard for me to temper my expectations. At the very least, it means that all of the most influential people in Disney and LFL--KK, Bob Iger, and other top-tier folks--have an incredibly high opinion of TLJ, and of RJ in general. If there had been any dissenting voices, or any hesitation, it makes sense to me that they would have at the very least waited until after the early box office returns and reviews were in for TLJ to make such a huge announcement.

Of course, there could have been other factors at work. Maybe they expect the announcement will stir up more excitement about TLJ. I can't imagine it will stir up that much more excitement, except among hard core fans. Even more casual fans who really love SW (like my brother) either haven't heard the news, or it doesn't really mean much to them. So it's still a really risky move: especially after the string of director removals they've had, it seems like the risk of it exploding in their faces is much higher than any boost in box office for TLJ it could provide. Which again suggests to me that they believe that TLJ is a top-quality film, and that RJ is one of the best blockbuster directors of his generation, if not the best.

They could all be wrong, of course, But Iger has shown himself to be incredibly good at making these kinds of bets, as has KK. So despite my best efforts at lowering my expectations, I could hardly be more excited right now!
