This is interesting because the Academy generally stays away from big budget blockbusters like Star Wars. In recent memory the only action movies that have even gotten buzz are the LOTR, The Dark Knight, Avatar, Inception, and now (maybe) Mad Max. It's even rarer to see them acknowledge sequels from large film franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I could see nominations in set design, visual effects, and maybe sound editing, but the big categories will be saved for low budget, pretentious, "high concept" flicks. The reason that the original Star Wars was nominated was because it was something that had never been done before. It was new and exciting from a cinematic perspective. I would look back on the categories that the PT had nominations in, I think that's going to give you a good frame of reference for what TFA could do at the Oscars.

I'm betting a nomination for original score, sound editing, special effects and maybe film editing.

While what I've seen from the cinematography has been good, it hasn't been 'amazing'. I'd put money down on Mad Max for a nomination, but not TFA.

It'll definitely get nominated in the technical areas like sound editing, costumes, set design, and visual effects but I think that'll be it. The score is a definite maybe (While John Williams usually gets a nomination for every active year, the academy has been proven to be unkind to sequel scores more often than not so that really hurts his chances).
The hard hitting categories (best picture, director, screenwriting) are unlikely unless they really knock this one out of the park in terms of execution. From what we've seen, the plot isn't spectacular but if J.J and company can find the emotional heart of the movie, the confusing specifics of the plot won't matter and it could nab nominations for those areas too.

I ignore Oscars, much like how they ignore sci-fi, fantasy and action films. A film may receive a Best Picture Oscar, but quite a few of those winners lose popularity, usually since people actually watch them after the winning and find them, well, not exactly living up to the hype (see The Greatest Show on Earth, which is considered one of the worst Best Pictures winners). And sometimes it's because many think that other films lost out in the award (like how The Lego Movie failed to get nominated for Best Animated Feature).

I'm pretty confident that The Force Awakens will win Best Original Score. I can't wait to hear what John Williams' came up with. I have a feeling it's gonna be the best Star Wars music we've heard yet.

Heres a good example as to why TFA will clean up in technical awards - The LEGO Movie. While the whole academy votes on ALL the categories once the nominations come in, it's only SPECIFIC FIELDS that get to vote on the nominees for a category. For example, sound people vote for the nominees for sound catagories. Animation studios vote for animated movies. That's why The Lego Movie didn't get nominated - the people voting for the nominees voted for their own films instead of The Lego Movie.

TFA will get nominated by the bulk of people working on it - sound, special effects, ect. This is also why it's gonna have a tough time for the bigger catagories like actor/actress and director.

To reach that goal, it would have to literally be one of the best film scores of all time. I personally, am expecting it to fall behind The Phantom Menace or Revenge of the Sith (4th or 5th) which would still be pretty great overall. Though if it's another Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (a generally good, but mostly disappointing score) then it'll rank dead last for me unfortunately.

You're probably right. But I just have this feeling that Williams is gonna blow us away with his score.

Yeah, there's been nothing but praise for it so far by those who have heard it (though to be fair, people that close to the film's production and the maestro himself wouldn't exactly bad-mouth the score). I eagerly await the first real glimpse of the score.

Doubtful on "Best Cinematography." There are some beautifully framed shots in the teasers but there are a number of strong projects in the pipeline (Emmanuel Lubezki's The Revenant or Anthony Dod Mantle's work on In the Heart of the Sea and the potential for surprisingly good work from Cary Joji Fukunaga on Beasts of No Nation -- the trailer left me underenthused).

The title of the thread is somewhat misleading. The title says Oscars (which suggests wins), whereas the poll asks about nominations.

I agree with most of the above :)

Will prob get nominated for best score, cinematography, editing, visual effects etc..

One to throw out there for fun.. Adam Driver will get a nomination for best supporting actor! Calling it now. :)

Probably be nominated for a few technical awards but not the "big" ones. I'm hoping Williams gets nominated for score but I honestly don't see it happening...:(

Why can't I vote for the Best Supporting Actor that Adam Driver and/or Harrison Ford are going to get. I wouldn't be suprised to see Harrison Ford win one of those "really it's to honor the old guy for his lifetime of work" Oscars.
