Unfortunately the Academy doesn't really care about sci-fi, fantasy, and action films, with few exceptions here and there. While I'm hoping this film is an exception, I highly doubt it will win any Oscars. Being nominated would be more likely, most likely for VFX, Sound, Editing, and Score, but I'd be very surprised if it managed to secure a win.
I've never really liked the Oscars anyways. All the best films usually get snubbed in my opinion. Like, How on earth did "The Social Network" beat "How to Train Your Dragon" for Best Score? Boggles the mind. My guess is, that HTTYD was an animated, fantasy film.

darker music is more appealing or a lot of people wanted that composer to win. its sort of the same thing with certain "cool" artists like richard d jamess who won a grammy last year. he stated making music when he was 12 in 1983 by he never won an award in the us like a grammy. so thats why "httyd"maybe didnt get an oscar its because of "priorities" and its not a good thing.

Priorities... in that case, they should give an Oscar to Leonardo Dicaprio and be done with it. lol. I swear he's been nominated (for good reasons) more than anyone else recently and never had a win. Poor guy.

yep i think people might be surprised by the performances of a lot of actors in this i think either daisy, ford or maybe by surprise mak hamill. id rather see hamill or ford. i think its a bad thing to give oscars to young actors like boyega or ridley because it messes with their goals and motivation in some cases because they think "i made it" i can just wait a couple of years and say no to less moneymaking roles and opt for something that will be 10x of a bigger budget $_$ and you job consists of only making money etc. anyways thats my opinion on oscars for ford and hamill i hope they freaking win BIG because they earned it

This is correct. TFA is unlikely to be nominated for Original Score as the Academy requires that it meet some subjective criteria that dictates the score must be based around original themes. For this reason they often don't put sequels that reuse themes on the list of eligible nominations.

There's been a movement for years in Hollywood to change the category as many great scores that center around either reused music, re-purposed music or variations on the work of other composers (See backlash for Black Swan or Whiplash in recent years).

So, as much as I'd like to see it. Its unlikely they deem TFA eligible unless they want to give it to Williams as a lifetime achievement award. But considering the number of Oscars he already has that seems unlikely.

which is exactly why the criteria exists in the first place. Way too much room for people to drive classical score composition out of the awards completely when they start giving awards to popular directors who use their soundtracks as a chance to make glorified mix tapes. No offense to Tarantino or Scorsese or the like who do this. Where appropriate it can be perfect for the film. But it doesn't deserve an award. Unless they want to create a Best Adapted Score category.

Star Wars was nominated for Best Picture!
I am still livid (even though I was not yet alive) that Empire wasn't.

Academy snobism. Mark my words: next to no one will know or remember The Revenant in 50 odd year or so. Almost everyone will remember and know The Force Awakens. Even the prequels. Star Wars created mythology that is timeless.

Also, the academy is not always lauded for its particular tastes: http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20160114-the-10-biggest-oscar-upsets-of-all-time.

And even the Revenant can be nitpicked to smithereens:

Sadly it won nothing, not even original score. However, its not al doom and gloom. It was nominated. And that is a great thing.
