HUMOR I want YOUR Star Wars hot takes

"Be careful not to choke on your aspirations, Director." is an awful line. It's like a terrible parody of Vader's sometimes detached understatements in the midst of some act of violence, which took on an absurd quality of their own. The line in Rogue One though is like "Always a bigger fish" all over again. It's not witty or laconic if you directly refer to what you're actually doing or what you're actually looking at.



"If this is a consular ship, where is the ambassador?" (Guy he's asking is already dead mid-sentence)

"I find your lack of faith disturbing" - (Need I say more?)

"Now you're highness we will discuss the location of your hidden rebel base" (Like above. Actually torturing her)

"Apology accepted, Captain Needa" (Dead guy is already dead because apology was not accepted)

...and so on.



Not "Be careful not to choke..." (he's literally choking him in that moment. If they absolutely HAD to use that line it would have been far more Vader if he had said that line later, after the choking's finished and as he's leaving. While he's choking him they could have had Vader say something about the power of the force, or heaped sarcastic praise on Krennic's powerful new weapon.)

Ahsoka isn’t the best character ever made like some claim. She’s good, but she’s not even the best original character from TCW. That’s Rex.

 

Hot Take: TFA is the worst of the ST. I really enjoy it, and love it a lot! But a lot of the dialogue is very poor, Finn's humor is just not funny, and find it very unoriginal.

 

I always say that TFA was great for the franchise but bad for the story. It's fun, nostalgic, and helped generate so much fervor for the ST. It's rehashing of ANH was really creative IMO. It allowed older fans to zone out on the plot and focus on the characters (the highlight), while newer fans can get that classic Star Wars story and new characters. But it ultimately doesn't really add anything to the Star Wars mythos, resets the galaxy and characters to their old selves for the sake of nostalgia, and ultimately pushed off any hard answers to the next instalment.

 

Yeah I agree completely with what you said. Like I said, I really enjoy the movie! I saw it 10 times in the theaters alone. BUT, from a creative standpoint, it just isn’t on par with TLJ and TROS to me.

 

TLJ is by far the best ST movie and actually one of my favorite Star Wars movies period. Sure Canto Bight was useless but RJ was taking the franchise in a new direction and that’s what I want. New things. Not a rehash like TFA. Or whatever TROS was.

 

I agree, but with one caveat. The FIRST act of TFA is amazing! It's incredibly tight and powerful, with show-don't-tell exposition in every scene. There's a 101 creative writing lesson in there on how to make every scene achieve multiple things. (Also, obviously, the editing really supports it). The rest of the film has good moments to me is a bit... alright, just alright, IMHO.
