We now know that Peter Mayhew has been confirmed for Episode VIII and we also know that there is Joonas Suotamo that could play the character in future episodes and in the Han Solo Anthology movie; however the demise of Han in VII and the concrete possibility that Mayhew will definitely retire after VIII (and his possible will to not to be completely replaced as Chewie in the next installments) suggest another concrete possibility: that Chewbacca will die in VIII, episode that we already know to be darker than VII.

So what do you think? Do you believe that Chewie will survive Episode VIII? (will he also survive IX??) Or he's going to die in Episode VIII? I personally believe the latter, and I see an heroic death in VIII for him, saving Leia, Rey or both from certain death.

like me.... Chewie will live forever.

the look that Rey & Chewie exchanged just before take-off near the end of TFA... looked like the start of a friendship to me, and one that i think will last this trilogy at least.

i don't want Chewie to die. i can't see it serve any purpose and he and Rey are great together!

Chewie was so awesome in TFA, though i still have a hard time processing him shooting Kylo Ren.

    No. He wont die.

Chewie now will be Rey's best partner and some kind of bodyguard to her. The.chemistry between both is pretty cool in TFA.

Why would they? I mean I love Peter Mayhew and I respect his contributions to SW immensely. And I hope tat LF continues to help him out with his health issues and takes care of him, for the rest of his days (they can certainly afford it at this point).

BUT, it makes very little sense from Disney/LF's perspective to just "retire" Chewie because Peter can no longer physically do it. I mean he's not the only really tall and athletic guy that could put on a Wookie costume and do the roar. In fact, they already found a new guy to play him in all of the actual physically demanding scenes in TFA. So they'd likely just continue to do that. Plus, they've gotten a new guy to replace Kenny Baker in the R2 armor, they're recasting Han Solo as we speak, and I think that they will eventually do so to Luke and Leia as well. So why wouldn't they do it with Chewie as well, makes no sense imo?

Also, as others have already said, TFA seemed to set up the idea that he and Rey could become partners/friends moving forward (including those final scenes on the MF).

If I was the writer... hell no.

I'm still pissed off Ford lobbied for Han Solo to die.

But you know what. 2 things accrue here. Han is dead and now we need a legacy.

Peter is not shy for charging astronomical amounts for his autograph... and he is/was broke so...

Sometimes I get caught up in the actors that portray the characters. As a true star wars fan I think the characters are all that should matter. In that regard if Chewie dies I will be very sad. He still has arms to rip off. All the stories Han told of Chewbacca need to be seen on film or else their legacy will be diminished. Chewbacca lives and lives hard if I'm writing future installments.

If I'm the writer for a sub plot. For Chewbacca this is the beginning.

I doubt it. Someone will lose an arm. Maybe he'll lose an arm?

With Han having died, Chewie dieing would be redundant.

Pretty much. Besides, it's not like he can hog away precious screen time with his presence. Chewie always could blend in with the other characters in a scene whilst adding to it considerably. Killing him for the sake of shock value would just piss off a lot of fans while doing absolutely nothing for the story.

It's not like he ate up a ton of screentime in TFA, and yet that may have been the best that these films have ever used him. It was great.

Right. Where there's no reason for Chewie dying, Han's death progressed the story considerably. It was symbolism for taking the final steps into Ren's training. Luke confronted his father to take his final steps to the light side, Kylo Ren killed his father to take his final steps into the dark.

A reason for Chewie dying could just be the strong friendship that he will develop with Rey and the pain that his death will subsequently cause to her: this could obviously be a powerful Kylo/Snoke dark weapon to make Rey suffer and bring her to the dark side. The same thing could happen to Finn but I think that it is highly unlikely that Finn (and Poe and Rey) could die in VIII.

Obviously I want Chewie to live on but I don't see his possible death in VIII as unuseful or improbable or meaningless for the story, especially for a darker story that must bring the main hero (Rey) very close to taking the dark path.

I see no reason for him dying. But Han is dead so I don't care anymore. Just kidding.
