Does else consider the possibility of a much too strict continuity. I mean it's kind of strict to just wipe the canon clean not to mention unkind to the fans, but I do see there are artistic benefits of having a strictly defined new EU and Pablo Hildalgo certainly knows Star Wars very well. I genuinely want to know what you guys think is canon more important than quality? and should Pablo have been less neat about continuity?

First of all, they never wiped the canon. Bfore Disney, The EU was never a part of canon and only the 6 movies, and TCW. What WAS wiped was the entirety of the eu, video games, etc so that the connected canon could become bigger without there being any sort of confusion. I wouldn't call that strict since anyone could still go and buy/read the eu books and games but a more refined/"strict" canon is much better because it's easier to track and keep in line.

My opinion is that quality and good story telling are vastly more important than what is in the "official" canon. I think the whole canon thing is making people limited in their view of Star Wars as well some people will are canon fanatics and that's a fact. So I would urge everybody to read the books and play the games they enjoy and not worry about its canonical status. You could say the Movies need a strongly defined canon to which I say the Star Wars OT set up the universe well enough you don't need to consider shove the books in or out of continuity. I also think in regards to the EU it was "canon"at leastmost people thought it was so Disney was un-ethical to designate it "legends".

I love this post! LIKE LOVE IT! haha.

Anyone that knows me well, will know I pick the Knights of the Old Republic era and beyond over the current "Canon" any day, now not saying I don't love everything from Rebels to Clones to the Movies, cause I truly do! I think Disney did the right thing, stripping all the rag tag games and comics etc, because it will make a clear EU for the future!

But, the reason I love the "Old" EU was for that amazing story telling, the fearlessness of killing someone and the perfect characters developed, from someone as unknown as Tobias Sun to the know EU gods of Exar Kun and the Shans ! As astro said, a lot of these amazing stories weren't canon anyway, they where just fans and people bringing their SW stories to life and Lucas would canonize some. So, do I think it's too strict? No, because it needs to be, to continue, but I feel like we should never stop writing the old EU and keep that alive.

oh YEAH I completely agree. I play TFU 1/2 and the ultimate additions when i go home for holidays on my PS3 and there are a couple now-legends books i like to read like Outbound Flight and Death Troopers and a bunch of young anakin that take place between AOTC and ROTS. What Disney believes, and maybe they have a point, is that to have a strongly defined canon they need to be in control of all forms of media so that, let's say TFA is released and then a bunch of non-canon books are released and everyone loves them but then they see VIII and the books werent true about the characters and all. But about your last bit, Lucas himself said that the legends were never canon to begin with and he ignored them completely when writing the movies even they there are a lot of great books mainly because he didnt write them or something like that.

Honestly, since the beginning of the Canon-restructure it did not matter to me in the least bit whether something was labeled Canon or Legends. It's all still Star Wars to me, but there are two noteworthy points.

    1) I dislike it when we get changes like Korriban=>Moraband for no great reason.
    2) For something new to be produced set in a specific SW era like the Old Republic, there will be a lot of hand-picked Canon inductions, as well as possible retconning. These things tend to get very tricky.

In short, the problem is not what got labeled as Legends in the first place, only what will come back to Canon, why and how.

I can agree with you there...if were getting a complete continuity reboot (for the EU) then it should be with purpose and not "just because"

This is the the sole reason I made this post to see what the fans think, since most SW fans know what they like and are awesome people, not to mention are the real reason Star Wars continues.

Also I said yes for all the reasons you mention, I know this is a controversial opinion but canon should not matter to SW the degree that it does, leaving room for interpretive points of views in SW.

No, as I feel the continuity is important. Keep in mind that there were several cases of timeline and event contradiction prior to Disney, and while my wife and I are HUGE Mara Jade fans and are sad that she's only a Legend now, I'd gladly see her as a legend as long as the continuity of the SW saga remained intact and not so contradictory that it all became unbelievable.

The cool thing about the SW galaxy is that its not as limited as other fantasy formats (for ex. Tolkien-stuff) that depend on hard borders simply because of a setting in a space without real boarders. Much more room for different EU materials. As long as the story group and fandom makes no holy gral of what is canon I will enjoy all different inputs just as much as before :).

Personally, I'm a big fan of a large-scale Canonical Story. I love how pieces all fit together. The Lucasfilm Story Group are doing a great job when it comes to Continuity.

I thought aspects of the Expanded Universe were ridiculous. To this day I despise the idea of the Yuuzhan Vong and Chewie getting killed by a moon... a moon. It all got a little silly. The Force Unleashed Game was is another example - sure I enjoyed it but the guy was seriously OP.

If you love those stories (don't get me wrong, I do love some of the EU Stories); then they're still there. You can read them and still love them. But for me; a Canonical SW Universe without ridiculous stories and contradictions is the only way forward for Star Wars/Lucasfilm and it's new wave of Comics, Books, Games, and above all Films.

Exactly. I loved reading the EU....so rich with adventure and stories, but the Vong (to me) seemed out of place in the SW universe. It was like somebody suddenly dropped a Syfy channel movie in the middle of SW....it just didn't seem to fit. And then there's the moon that killed Chewie......yeah, no. :)

Completely agree mate. I feel like a solid Canon will stop that kind of thing. It's proven out so far.

Also; another thing to bare in mind with this is that with the new set-up we're getting a more films. Instead of a book/comic/game we'll betting a full feature film - such as Rogue One. For these films to exist; Star Wars needs reliable and solid continuity.

Well that was different because it come completely from Tolkien's mind, whereas many writers help create SW alongside George Lucas. But your right, don't get me wrong I looooove Star Wars books and comics but as I said on my profile I do it for the lore and cool character stuff rather than anything else. Like I geeked out when luke went in that Hutt's basement on Nar Shadaa, sooo cool.

Yeah I abosutely agree Chewie should never die.. At least for awhile, and when he does he's gotta go out like a freakin boss.
    --- Double Post Merged, Nov 1, 2016 ---
That's a good point, Im hoping Revan will be in new canon as well he is such a fan favorite as well as Mara Jade.. That's exactly what I meant when i said it was sort a unkind to have the EU be legends. I just hope the ST, The Thrawn Novel and all of the spinoff films will be good, going forward.

firstly.. do we have a term for disney's EU/canon tidy? if we don't, then we really do need one as it comes up a lot !

I don't think Disney said much about it, but they did say that the goal was..
“to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers”

most of what was dropped into the Legends category makes sense if you think about it. Do i think they are too strict about it all? no i don't think so.. it can't be easy for the story group, but i think they all do a super job.

just recently the decisions they made and the route they are going in made complete sense to me... with the arrival of a certain chap with a distinctive blue complexion.

has that ever been properly explained? it's probably the one thing that irritated me the most. was it TCW that named the sith home world as Moraband?

I will always call it Korriban regardless of canon.
    --- Double Post Merged, Nov 2, 2016, Original Post Date: Nov 2, 2016 ---
What do you guys think of this arguement?

Logically speaking, Disney making things "canon" is an illusion because anyone can have their own head canon, since this is fiction we are talking about. They could pick and choose what is canon FOR THEM (given, all of the movies have to be canon). I don't see how anyone can refute that point.

This is a piece from Moraband's wookieepedia page:
Moraband was heavily based on the Star Wars Legends world Korriban, which first appeared in the 1994 comic book Tales of the Jedi: Dark Lords of the Sith 2: The Quest for the Sith. During the production of "Sacrifice," The Clone Wars team initially called the planet Korriban, but George Lucas preferred the name Moraband. The name was changed to reflect his wishes, but Lucasfilm noted upon release of the episode that a planet as ancient as Moraband could have had several different names throughout its existence. Its location in the Outer Rim Territories was confirmed in a galactic map created for Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary, which placed it in the same point in space as Korriban was in Star Wars Legends.

So, basically during the TCW production George Lucas decided he liked Moraband better than Korriban and told the team to change it up. It's generally considered the same planet with a changed name sometime after the Old Republic years.

The Expanded Universe was never canonical material. Uncle George never sanctioned that material as canon. But hey, the books and the rest of the material are still out there, so if someone enjoys reading Heir to the Empire or the New Jedi Order, there should be no problem. The only thing is that their characters are not part of the current canon... yet.

"There is a little bit of truth in legends..."

Let's say that we didn't have the EU wipe and that JJ Abrams comes to make Episode VII. Let's think that he does not know a lot about the EU stories post-ROTJ and he says he wants to have all the OT characters, including Chewie. But wait, then he would be told "oh no Chewie is dead 30 years after ROTJ". So... no.

I would have been fine if SW just kept expanding in books rather than movies.. Uh oh
I am now a heretic in fandom LOL. Yeah like I say I care more for the spinoff films than if I may be so blunt giving SW episodic films the Rocky syndrome. I just know I'm gonna like R1 better than the Episode 7 But I digress. I prefer books to movies as a medium anyway, so yeah...

I also don't believe the SW franchise is something that can be owned by anyone. Star Wars is Not a product to be 'owned' by Disney or anybody else it is as important to out society as the Odyssey was to the Greeks. GL was NOT the only creator of SW many others help form this Galaxy we love.
