Just how strong is Kylo Ren?

On the "serious badass" side he stopped a blaster bolt in mid-air. That may have been the single most mind-blowing scene in the movie. That takes some serious skill.

On the "wannabe badass" side, Finn lost his lightsaber fight against a stormtrooper in half a minute, then held his own against Kylo Ren for five times that long. Kylo's Force skills don't seem to extend do his fighting abilities.

What do you make of a guy who can sense a blaster being fired at him from behind, but who doesn't sense his own father walking up behind him?

Is he the real deal or not?

I get why this keeps coming up. I really do.
But... Try carrying out a decent lightsaber fight after being shot in the abdomen with chewbacca's bowcaster.
Kylo still put Finn down pretty brutally, but took a shot in the shoulder though.
Also, we are shown that kylo killing Han left him more conflicted instead of stronger in the dark side.
This could have been made more clear in the film. But was made clear in the novel.
Rey runs from an injured kylo like crazy. All the way to the edge of a crumbling cliffside. Only when she concentrates can she take kylo by surprise and take him down.
I have zero problems with this outcome.
Kylo is extremey powerful, but also conflicted, undisciplined, and unfocused.
Just like a reverse luke skywalker, he will grow much stronger in the darkside in ep 8.
    Which is cool.
