Let's talk spoilers.

I consider a spoiler information that is intimately related to part of a plot that could be considered unpredictable and in consequence ruins the surprise of the viewer.
This is very subjective since people are not always surprised by the same things.

 

Story.

 

On one hand, I think that anything officially released is fair game..

For me, spoiler is something that changes the way the story was supposed to be told to you...
As an obvious example, if someone spoils the Sixth Sense, it will completely change the way you will see the movie for the first time...

So going back to the officially released contents, if they feel that its ok to use something in the marketing material, then it should mean that you knowing that will not influence your appreciation of the movie.

Even knowing plot points may not be a spoiler, in the case of historical events, in particular... You already know how the D-day ended up, but it's still interesting to see WWII movies... or Titanic, spoiler, it sinks...
You already know it beforehand but that does not influence the way the movie was supposed to be showed to you.

But on the other, sometimes marketing messes up, you have KK saying "this character is in VIII, this character is in VIII..." or "Qui-Gon's Noble End"...
Or lets take the BvS trailler as an example... Many people feel that it showed too much, complaining that it showed that they end-up friends (as if the title of the movie was not enough to know that... Personally I feel that this trailer was meant for the people that were on the "Why are they fighting?" camp)....

So... yeah... It depends?

Yes, something like that.. But not necessarily "part of a plot"... Take the Luke picture leak for example, it can just be a visual surprise... Just the how the character will be presented can be considered a spoiler, if it was supposed to be hidden...

 

I think if picture, toys, etc are released officially then to me it's not really a spoiler.....

However, story information is a different thing all together.

 

Let's talk spoilers, the story leak would be that a real spoiler I would be George Lucas begging Stan Lee to put it in a fire, oh I found this.

 

Merchandise is only a spoiler if it includes previously unknown plot details and is either prematurely a) leaked online or b) released into stores. Cast can be a spoiler if a character intended to be a surprise is in the film is leaked--- ie, if Billy Dee Williams suddenly mentions in an interview that he saves Han in TFA for instance it would be a huge shock to all because there isn't even a hint of a rumor that Lando would appear let alone affect major consequences on the plot.

The above image of Phasma can't possibly be considered a spoiler. Her image is everywhere on television, online and in stores. If an individual makes a personal choice to avoid any and all information surrounding the film, they should also avoid social media sites such as Facebook. It's almost impossible to be unaware of Captain Phasma at this point.

 

I am in an interesting field. Ever since the first trailer was released of the force awakens, i have looked for anythign i could find lol. So to me, spoilers would be big plot points.

Now my father is going to go into TFA not knowing anything. He has no knowledge of BB8, Poe, Finn, Kylo and his Crossguard lightsaber, Starkillerbase. He has seen no trailers, tv spots, no toys, or any posters. He is going into this completely blind. To him, spoilers would be ANYHTING related to the film.

After this experience i think i have come to the conclussion that i will watch the trailers and tv spots, but will no longer look for spoilers or go onto this site. Its just to tempting.

 

I don't consider your pic a spoiler as what you have said is true regarding Phasma being shown and advertised all over.
This on the other hand sucked and is a spoiler BIG TIME!

 

lol SUCH a great spoiler...I wonder how that one slipped through the cracks.

 

Ha Ha yeah my friend that spoiler was really messed up and sadly I was one of those that bought the music CD before the movie came out.
