The last thing Star Wars needs is more fan fiction. Just because Luke is popular TO US doesn't mean he has to be "the best Jedi EVVVAAHHH..." -_-

Just give us a decent Jedi master who trains Rey properly and holds his own against Kylo and Snoke.

Seriously, I am pretty sure this is what Episode 8 has in store for us:

    But with a twist.

He will show a display of power never seen in the history of Star Wars... think Dooku vs Yoda... think Yoda in this fight but with that little glimpse of Darkside in him.

That's why, I have this theory Luke will embrace the Darkside of the Force sometime in Episode 8 or 9.

It has been established in the OT. Yoda's prophecy didn't put the emphasis on Han & Leia being captive on Bespin... but that his love for his friend & sister was and will always be his weakness.

Han is down, let's see how Luke reacts to that.
When Leia will be down.... let's see if Yoda was right and if we see the expansion of what happened in ROTJ.

Luke is not over with his struggle... maybe that is why he isolated himself. Bringing him out might unleash a Dragon and I am pretty sure we will have glimpses of that in Episode 8.

    Greatest Jedi Ever?

While I believe he will be powerful in the force; what makes a Jedi powerful? seriously this is a debate which could take pages to discuss. As long as Luke Skywalker is the wise mentor, and his teachings to Rey are adequate to elevate her training, so to prepare her for the journey ahead then Luke Skywalker will be the Grand Master we all want to see.

I agree with that, though it would be nice to get just one scene where Luke shows us how awesome he was, taking out the Knights Of Ren or something. Aside from that, he should be on the decline. Not Yoda levels of decline, but just enough that we know he's getting too old for this sh*t.

    You..... you win this time.

    lol

It would be cool if Luke suddenly uses force lightning on Kylo, he should be a gray Jedi. Pure Gandalf-esque Luke would be a bit boring (but to be honest that's what I expect, seeing as Disney are making this SW trilogy their Lord Of The Rings)

Yes yes yes! This lady get it. (lightsaber)

Only issue I have with that approach is that future Jedi will either be less powerful (not as cool) or stupid ridiculously powerful (making future installments too superhero dumb). It could be very cool and fun to see Luke be very powerful but would also take away from other characters.

I think just by Snoke's fear of Luke returning it proves that Luke is the most dangerous force user in the galaxy (at this point)
However his power could be (and should be in my opinion) Ideological.

I think TFA has shown, more than any previous instalment, that the force works through people. That it flows through force sensitives (or just anyone perhaps) if you let it. Yoda said as much in ESB. And Rey's 'Force Awakening' (if that's what it was) proved that the force has motives. Or that was my reading of it. That if the user works with the force they can accomplish great things. And I suppose the force wants balance, harmony and so on.

So Luke could be the most powerful jedi ever...But I don't think the force is like a power level. Thats PT stuff. I mean how powerful was Obi Ben Kenobi in A New Hope? The answer is up for debate, but he managed to change the fate of the Galaxy by uniting Luke, Han and Leia. Its Hokey, but Star Wars is Hokey.

I don't think Snoke fears Luke because he can pull down a star destroyer....any other battle ship could do that. whats the Vader line? 'The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant compared to the power of the force.' I mean, that's the real deal right there. Because even if Luke was stripped of mind powers or being able to make objects levitate he would still be able to bring the empire down, the force is most powerful when it is ideological.

And I think that is also how it's strength works. Basically. That's why it worked through Rey, and its also how Obi Wan killed Darth Maul. its like, it has a plan and the plan is equilibrium.

    Not only...

    1) Took a blast on his chest;
    2) Finn hit him on the right arm;
    3) Rey hit him on the left arm, on the left leg, on the right hand and slashed his face...

... and he's still alive! Young Obi was such a pussy!

    :)

and all while in the midst of an existential crisis during which he killed his father (who absolutely didn't mean "nothing" to him).
while he may be lacking in the wisdom department, he certainly lacks nothing in the power department ~ hahaha

I could just see Luke facing off against Kylo and Snoke. You want to the Dark Side of the Force? I will show you the Dark Side of the Force, as his eyes go dark red and his green light Saber turns crimson red.

The only things I can base myself on are the following.:

Initially, Mark Hamill was not happy with his final role in TFA. Thought it was silly how he'd be revealed until Abrams convinced him it would be great.

I imagine his contract makes him a prominent figurehead of VIII, although one of the factors Disney and LFL were afraid of in VII, was how much he was going to just basically own the screen when his scenes were to be played, so they gave him the end scene reveal instead.

Which brings me to a Daisy Ridley quote about EP VIII. She says and I quote:

"Luke is sooo cool in this one"

What exactly that means for me is well aligned with the Op's statement, but, to a lesser impactive extent.

Will he be amazingly powerful in VIII? I think so, Yes.

But I believe they will use him so, in maybe one or two scenes, to make the audience gasp and jaw drop and only towards the end. ☺

    My two pesos.

Would you hear something? To me, in Ep.8 Luke will barely extract his saber. I believe there will be a major fight between him and Kylo, but I think Luke will be massively reluctant to fight his nephew, and so it's probably he will use the Force to react to Kylo's strikes, before engaging him with the lightsaber.

Maybe, with "cool", Daisy Ridley was referring to the use of the Force. Maybe we are going to see some brand new things Luke's able to do with the Force.
