Obi-wan did but the wasn't the hero he was the mentor (I wou;dn't be surprised if Luke does this in Episode VIII or IX).

Rogue One characters didn't willing allow themselves to be killed or take actions knowing they'd be killed.

I mean Bruce Willis in Armageddon, Neo in the Matrix, Spartans in 300, Spock in Wrath of Khan style sacrifice. Rey doing something she KNOWS will end with her death, but she does it anyway.

I think it is safe to say that the Rogue One characters knew the likelihood they would not make it back from the mission was very high.

sorry, but this would be too depressing for me and I may not be able to watch this movie in cinema if this happens. Luke's death onscreen is the last thing I want to watch or even may be able to watch. If it is a sacrifice or not. I don't go to movies to be depressed, especially now after Carrie is gone. :(

Assuming Disney keeps moving forward with Star Wars stories, sooner or later Luke, Rey, Finn, Kylo, Chewie etc... will all die.

Before episode VII even came out I had always assumed Han, Luke and Leia would all perish during the course of the trilogy. It just makes sense. The longer they are around, the harder it is for the new cast to cement their roles as the stars of this trilogy. I figured Han, then Leia VIII, then Luke in IX. Rey needs to be alone as the hero to live up to the role, much like Luke had to do it without Yoda and Obi-Wan. I'm dying to know how it all plays out!

Also, after IX comes out, we will be discussing for decades what was SUPPOSED to happen and how it was changed after Fisher's passing. No matter what happens, we all know it won't be the original intent.

I really hope Luke survives this trilogy and has some time to rebuild the Jedi order and in X, he may be killed or reduced to a small cameo role. But he needs time to establish the Jedi, while his righthand Rey can lead the battle. ;)

I don't think Luke will die in VIII, Disney want to try something new, and after VII where the similarities between it and a 'New Hope' were very obvious, they'll be trying pretty hard to make it stand out from the other movies. Luke definitely has to die at some point, but if Kylo kills him it mirrors Obi's death. We'll probably see the start of those big plans they had for Luke and Leia in VIII, but now that Carrie is gone I think Luke will have an even larger role. However, I hope that they focus on Rey's hero story and don't lose track.

Regardless of whether or not Rey is a Skywalker, this is the Skywalker story, and I think this is as much Luke's story as it is Kylo's and Rey's.

In the prequels, Anakin more or less destroyed the Order, fell to the Dark Side and become Vader.
In the OT, Luke overcomes the pull of the Dark Side, aids in the redemption of his father and destroys the Big Bad: The Emperor. If he was ever going to die or change Side, it would be then.

I think the ST is about Luke's - and our - understanding of the Force, and the redesign of the Jedi Order. One of the many reasons it fell is that it used midi-chlorians as an identifier for Force sensitive students, when, in fact (as was alluded to in an interview from the 80's with GL and recently came up in Rebels) the Force moves through everyone and everything: the Jedi are the only ones who devoted time and effort to unlock their own potential with the Force, and, likewise, the Sith unlocked their own potential in the Force through a thirst for power.

The Jedi Order was flawed, and I don't think it's returning five or six years after being abruptly ended once again simply because they now have Rey at their side. Luke is the Last Jedi, and the First of something new. This is as much the redemption of the Order as it was his father: to prove to the rest of the Galaxy that every individual is capable of using such a vast source of knowledge and power, in my opinion, is his new goal. And to do that, he can't simply turn up for five minutes say "the Force is great" and everything is rosy. I think he lives.

Slightly off topic but I do somewhat agree with this. I could maybe see them doing what they did with Paul Walker in the Fast & Furious films. Not necessarily killing Leia off but sending her to have a quieter life somewhere else in the galaxy.. that'd be perfect.

I've wondered that too. Why limit themsevles to batches of 3 films when they could just continue the story?

I think tradition has more to do with it than anything. I assume they will continue the story of the characters in the ST without the characters of the OT in the future trilogy. Another thing is the trilogy allows time to rest between stories so that other media can be produced to fill the time in between. I think that is very intentional so the trilogy aspect probably won't change going forward.

Maybe Kylo will have her frozen in a carbonite slab and fired off in to space.

Based on Trevorow's comments, I think it's safe to say that Luke will appear throughout the trilogy -- but given the existence of force ghosts, and the precedent of an elder bearded jedi becoming one earlier in the saga, I don't think it's safe to say that Luke won't die.

Whether Luke lives in the physical world is irrelevant to me personally. what I'm fascinated is what will his Legacy be? a New order of less flawed Jedi? New group of light side users? Or an absence of such an order but the legacy of the Skywalkers and the Force alive in the galaxy always. It's very possible that The Last Jedi will have a sad ending not quite as Episode 3 or Rogue One, but a situation where it's obvious Rey has to overcome a lot in 8 and 9.

    I agree.

FF is definitely my guilty pleasure, and I thought for a series that is unintentionally hilarious as often as FF is, they set the standard for saying goodbye to a character and actor. I don't cry at movies, but I definitely teared up when that part came on in the theater. It was done in a very FF way, which really wouldn't work in most circumstances (that song was perfect for FF, but would've been cheesy in most movies)

If LFL did something similar with Leia that was SW appropriate, I'd be thrilled.
