Oscar Isaac: “I love [the controversy about Poe in Star Wars: The Last Jedi]. It’s incredible, because you have people actually engaging with the ethical question of war and what leadership is. The last thing you want is for people to watch a movie and be like, ‘Great,’ and then move on. With [The Last Jedi], the conversation continues and can stir real emotions. You’re having a conversation about actual things that matter, you know?” “What I think is really special about the whole thing — particularly for people that really didn’t agree with where the story went — is that it’s often a great inspiration to do your own stuff. Obviously, making your own Star Wars movie is a bit of a tough challenge, but at least from a narrative standpoint maybe you make your own thing and then show what you would want. Make what you would want to see.” “I’m very happy about that [decision to feature Carrie Fisher as Leia in Episode IX]. I think it’ll be a wonderful way to deal with this character that we all love so much.” (August 27, 2018)

Oscar Isaac: “[J. J. Abrams] seems to me just as excited if not more so because now there's a history there, there's a shorthand, and the nature of the story is different.” (August 28, 2018)

Oscar Isaac: "[The Resistance in Star Wars: Episode IX] are guerrilla fighters, adhering closer to something like the Revolutionary War fighters or even the guerrillas in Cuba with Che and Fidel and all these guys living in the mountains, coming down to do some attacks, and going back and trying to hide from the 'empire' of the United States. It's that kind of ragged at this point." "[It always] feels like [Carrie Fisher's still around]; [she is] still with us." (August 30, 2018)

Oscar Isaac: "I mean, it’s constantly both [exciting and a job that I feel working on Star Wars again]. It’s a job, it’s difficult, it’s challenging but it’s also really fun and really cool. J.J. [Abrams] is such a wonderful, fun, incredibly intelligent guy to work with. It’s been a blast so far. Everyone’s excited and happy but also confident because we know who these people are. It feels like there’s even more trust with the characters and these scenes and the dialogue. There’s a wonderful looseness to the whole thing that I’m really liking." "No, [the fan backlash to Star Wars: The Last Jedi was] not really [surprising]. I mean, isn’t that the point of movies: to say something and then people can talk about it and agree or disagree or like something or not like something? Someone says how they would want to do it instead and maybe that’s the inspiration for them to become a filmmaker or an actor. What’s the version that you would want to see? I think it can be actually inspirational in that way." (August 24, 2018)

    Oscar Isaac:
"[I'm] not really [going to be sad to say goodbye to Star Wars after Episode IX finishes.] I've gotta get on with my life, man. It's a lot of years (laughs). Coming back this third time has actually been the most fun so far. We all just have a real command of what we're doing, and it feels a bit looser. It's going to be a great sendoff, not only for the fans and for the story, but I think for us as well that have devoted so much time to it." (August 28, 2018)

Great interview. This part caught my attention. Resistance being in this position at the start makes sense, but I wonder how (or if) they are going to get a big enough fleet to end the trilogy with huge space battle. Because it's Star Wars and you cannot end a trilogy without one.

Mine too... and I think It’s interesting because what I get is that the Resistance in IX is going to be very much like the French or Italian Resistance during WWII... with partisans hidden in the mountains behind the cities.
It’s a very specific historical reference.
And if so... I guess that this time the main focus isn’t going to be on a space battle but on a ground conflict.
And it will be a brave choice.
Not because we’ve never seen ground battles at all... but they’ve never been “the” point.

    This.

I have exactly the same take on this matter as Oscar Isaac. Apart from the terrible rudeness and callousness the backlash against TLJ has brought about online, I see nothing but positivity in it happening . I think people critical of this film have been inspired and somewhat forced to create the film in their heads as they would have wanted it to be, and that’s a great thing IMO. The amount of discussion and creativity displayed in this very site has been amazing... TLJ has given us all a lot to think about and that has offered a lot of good with the inevitable bad. The writer in all of us has given alternative plot lines and character development, the actor in us has imagined a different approach to the interpretation of different characters... And there is absolutely nobody stoping any of us coming up with the “right” story as we see it, the “right” characters, and putting them out there for others to see or read. That’s what SW has always been about I think, inspiring, delighting.

I’m so glad there is a thread dedicated to Poe in IX. He’s a great character and Oscar is a delight to watch!

I suppose, but you cannot overthrow something like the First Order without a fleet. It's basically the same, as if the American revolutionaries attacked London and George Washington took out George III in a fencing duel.

The US came to help La Resistance against Germany, so if we continue with the analogy, maybe the Outer Rim crowd will be "The Americans" in episode IX. And I have the feeling this Outer Rim people are underworld opportunists like Lando or gangsters like the equivalent of Paul Betany's character in Solo, who could be convinced somehow to fight with the resistance against the FO. I'm with Mike Zeroh on that one :D

Well, you don't really have to be Mike Zeroh to predict that :)
The post-NR space is basically every system for themselves, so it's either Outer Rim or Unknown Regions. UR is unlikely, because a) it's too late to introduce a faction with big enough fleet (like the Chiss) and b) I doubt JJ actually follows anything outside of the movies and would know about stuff like the Chiss. We can't expect the "Americans" to build a fleet themselves, so the whole movie would probably be about the Resistance running around gathering enough ships to strike at "London". Basically - *spoiler warning*

Ugh and me thinking I was being knowledgeable... :(

Like presumably JJ I've no clue who those Chiss peeps are, but I'm sure what you're saying is very possible... so probably there will be guerrilla tactics and the like... unless the Canto Bight arm dealers start selling their weapons to the underworld mafias O_o

Oscar Isaac: "[I trust J.J. Abrams's] sensibility [in regard to bringing Leia back via unused footage shot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens]. When I read the script it all made a lot of sense to me. Treating that character that we all love so much with real respect from the beginning — I was very happy about that." "[I am excited to wrap up Poe's] fulfilling arc [with the upcoming final Star Wars sequel trilogy film]. It’s been a good chunk of time where we’ve been doing these movies (laughs)." Doesn't that sound like Poe will not make it alive after IX or am I just reading too much into it? :(

It could be taken that way, but I read it simply as finishing the character's arc because this is the last film.
We can speculate more on that when rumors start to build. :)

I don’t know if I have to use a spoiler tag... so I will just in case

I’ve seen the pictures from the set with Poe, Finn, Chewie and those of the jungle planet...
Many are speculating it may be a new planet - and sure it can - or a return to Endor.
But I was thinking, it could also be a return to Yavin IV. It’s a jungle planet too and Poe’s home planet.
A place he knows all too well and if the Resistance in IX - as Oscar said - looks more like a guerrilla with
fighters hiding in small groups, it could make sense for him to lead one of them in a place he knows that well.

    What do you think?

Makes sense. If it is Endor, we should hear about ewoks making a comeback at some point.

Endor should get blown up in retaliation to the Ewoks’ actions in ROTJ.

I really think you are on to something with the possibility of diving into Poe's backstory for some story elements. His family is connected to the Skywalkers, it would be cool to see that payoff in the movie or at least have purpose beyond the comics.
