I do think they could borrow elements from the EU such as names, planets, props, aliens, and costumes so they could focus their efforts into more important aspects of the film such as plot and character development. If they ever get stumped on something they could always use or refer to the EU for ideas and inspiration.

I don't think Lucas would let anyone write about something that he probably was going to do himself, or at least in a totally different manner. I think I remember reading somewhere that he would have never let Luke marry or have kids.

Lucas said in the original ST treatment he wrote, Luke would have a "love interest" and be an Obi-Wan-like role.

I did like Jaxx's ship. ;-) Valance was an interesting character. Hated droids because he was a cyborg himself. I always liked that.

The Wheel was a fun setting as well - this giant space casino. Fun stuff.

I could see him having a romance, but not necessarily get married. This is from an interview in Total Film magazine with George Lucas in 2008:

"TOTAL FILM: "Are you happy for new Star Wars tales to be told after you're gone?"

LUCAS: "I've left pretty explicit instructions for there not to be any more features. There will definitely be no Episodes VII-IX. That's because there isn't any story. I mean, I never thought of anything. And now there have been novels about the events after Episode VI, which isn't at all what I would have done with it. The Star Wars story is really the tragedy of Darth Vader. That is the story. Once Vader dies, he doesn't come back to life, the Emperor doesn't get cloned and Luke doesn't get married..."

Obviously Lucas changes his mind a lot, so we'll see what happens to Luke.

The problem is "which Lucas"? The man was pretty much making it up as he went along. Even from the very beginning. The Kurtz interviews are fascinating. It doesn't diminish the genius of what was created - but never believe that George Lucas had a clear vision and timeline of events for Star Wars until that particular bit was being created/scripted/filmed.

George's real genius was keeping his themes and plot points sufficiently broad. That perpetual vagueness allowed him to continually retcon his narrative without contradicting his "established cannon."

This is the inherent difficulty in crafting a dramatically correct sequel trilogy. How do you honor what's come before while building something fresh and exciting? I often think of the mess that was Star Trek: Generations. It was a failed attempt to have one generation "pass" the torch to the next. However, they were so afraid that Kirk and Co. would overshadow the "Next Generation" that the writers turned Kirk into a supercilious buffoon. Then, to top it off, they gave him an almost laughably throwaway death because they wanted the movie to be about "TNG" and not Kirk's death. These kind of cynical calculations can ruin drama. I'm of the mind that you should do whatever is "best" for the movie. (Ie; If you are afraid of Kirk casting a "shadow" by his presence, personality, or even his death....then don't put him in the movie at all!)

I guess my biggest fear for the Sequel Trilogy is how Abrams will handle the "Big 3." I'm afraid that the writers won't want to make them (Han, Luke, Leia) appear too strong or vivd as characters for fear they will overshadow Ridley, Boyega, Gleeson, etc. However, if they make the big three appear too old, or weird, or somewhat weak (and unaccomplished post-ROTJ) then they risk diminishing the narrative impact of the previous six films, and the Star Wars cannon overall.

It's a really, really tough balance. I don't envy the spot the writers are in ( and yet I do...so bad!)

*With apologies to everyone who hates Star Trek, I was merely using "Generations" to make a point.
