Since Oscars are coming out next week, the 2016 in films is very close to an end. This means that we are soon going to get a huge influx of new releases and officially kickstart cinematic 2017. With that in mind I wanted to ask you a question - what are your most anticipated new releases in 2017? Here is my list (in more or less chronological order.)
    1. Logan. I do not care for X-men films at all. However, this is a notable exception. In recent years we got a number of great neo-westers (Sicario, No Country for Old Men, Hell or High Water) and this film seems to continue this fantastic tradition.
    2. Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2. The first Guardians are my favourite MCU film and from the trailers I assume that it's going to be at least as good as the previous one. Lots of humour, fantastic characters, phenomenal music and 70's kitsch - this is what I need in my life.
    3. The Red Turtle. Do you remember first 30 minutes of WALL-E, when no characters were speaking? This film takes that concept makes a whole film out of it. Definitely something I want to experience on the big screen.
    4. Cars 3. Every cinephile has that one film, that made him realise that not all film are good. In my case this was Cars 2. You may ask why would I wait for a sequel to my first cinematic disappointment? Cars are considered to be Pixar's lowpoint and they have something to prove with that film. A challenge that that they seem to tackle pretty nicely (at least when you look at the trailers.)
    5. Anihilation. Alex Garland's cinematic debiut, Ex Machina, is a fantastic sci-fi film and a great promise for more to come. While we don't know much about it right now, the cast at least seems great (Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, Tessa Thompson just to name a few.) Add to that a proven writer-director and you get this one to look for.
    6. Blade Runner 2049. While I liked Sicario, Denis Villeneuve got my heart with Arrival, which is my favourite film of 2016. He understands sci-fi and how to tackle it in an exciting way. This would have been enough to put me on board, but the fact that it is a continuation of a great film definitely helps.
    7. Coco. Lee Unkrich is often forgotten when people talk about the best directors working for Pixar, yet he left his mark on classics such as Finding Nemo or Monsters, Inc. on a position of co-director and directed arguably the best Pixar animation - Toy Story 3. Mexican traditions for Dia de Muertos are a fantastic inspiration for a film in general, especially in visual department and Lee's experience in storytelling are bound to give us another instant classic.
    8. Murder on the Orient Express. I have no idea how Kenneth Branagh collected such a cast. Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Willem Dafoe, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley and the list goes on and on. Do I really need to say anything more?
    9. Star Wars: The Last Jedi. This will come as no surprise. We're, after all, on a Star Wars forum. However, let's forget about that for a moment. I love The Force Awakens and like Rogue One. However, when I watch these films, I feel that something is missing, that previous SW movies had, even the Prequel Trilogy. The problem is that I cannot pinpoint exactly what tha is, it may be related to George Lucas, but if there's a person that has the biggest chance to bring this "something" back, it is Rian Johnson. An acclaimed independent writer-director brought into this massive franchise can bring new quality into blockbuster cinema in general unless the producers intervene in too big of a way. Thankfully, that does not seem to be the case so far, which can only mean positive thing for the film.

I plan on seeing the following in theaters - and I've seen a few of these already, so there's that.
    • Split.
    • All cape flicks based on Marvel and DC properties (The LEGO Batman Movie, Logan, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, and Justice League).
    • John Wick: Chapter 2.
    • Kong: Skull Island.
    • Beauty And The Beast.
    • Life.
    • Ghost In The Shell (I'm kicking myself for missing the recent anniversary screening of the original).
    • King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword.
    • Alien: Covenant.
    • Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
    • The Mummy.
    • Cars 3 (surprisingly enough).
    • Transformers: The Last Knight (surprisingly enough).
    • War For The Planet Of The Apes.
    • Dunkirk.
    • Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets.
    • The Dark Tower.
    • It.
    • The LEGO Ninjago Movie.
    • Flatliners.
    • Blader Runner 2049.
    • Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
    • God Particle.
    • Coco.
    • Murder On The Orient Express.
    • Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi.
    • The Greatest Showman.
I'll probably see other movies in addition to everything (or nearly everything) on this list, but just going off of it, that's 33 movies.

Wow being a huge comic book fan, and a fan of Luc Besson (The Professional, The 5th Element and Lucy - surprisingly enough, thanks Pomo haha) how could I forget Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

Mostly the same as others have said, GotG 2, Thor 3, Kong, The Dark Tower and TLJ.

In another season of sequels, I'm not sure that I can be bothered with Blade Runner 2049 though... the original is one of my favorite films ever and didn't need one sequel, let alone 2047 of them in the past 35 years ;)

We're looking at a terribly uncreative year. Reboots, sequels and adaptations on the top of each other. I'm not really that excited over any movie except ep VIII, JW2 and maybe Blade Runner 2049.

    I'll definitely watch however:

    John Wick 2
    Ghost in the Shell
Alien: Covenant (if it gets good reviews)
PotC 5 (Although I find the lack of Hans Zimmer disturbing. He's around 50% of the franchise's success imo)
    Dunkirk
    Valerian
    The Dark Tower
    Blade Runner 2049
and ofc: Star Wars ep VIII

Yep, such is the way of our global multi-media consumption... it doesn't seem that long ago that there was still some level of genre based creativity amidst the odd sequel (The Matrix and Galaxy Quest both debuted along with TPM in 1999) and adaptations that still felt fresh and different (The Iron Giant). Granted not all were successful or particularly great (eXistenZ, Wing Commander and Wild, Wild West), but there was at least a desire and some level of studio 'gamble'.

Oddly, it was also the turning point for mass sequelisation... The Matrix was a success and bore 2 more vastly inferior chapters, Galaxy Quest 2 has long slummed it in development hell and TPM was pre-determined to have 2 further Episodes follow it. By 2000 Fox had kicked off the X-Men franchise and WB followed up Pitch Black and all up there's been fewer 'new' or original stories out there every year since.

Without this turning into a complete downer-post, these all make me supremely hesitant too... GitS is a seminal anime and (like the new Disney franchise model) I'm not convinced that a live action adaptation can add anything to it, Prometheus was amongst the biggest cinematic disappointments I've ever had the misfortune to witness and PotC has been on a diminishing arc for years.

    Don't sleep on Wind River!
Written and directed by Taylor Sheridan!

Sheridan wrote both Sicario and Hell or High Water, two of the best written movies in their respective years. It's also his directorial debut.

I personally think Hell or High Water is as well.
Sheridan may be the best working writer in Hollywood
