I wasn't sure if it got at least an official American release date. That's why I didn't put it onto my list but I definitely can't wait to see it. I liked both Sicario and Hell or High Water very much and after Windriver's premiere on Sundance and positive reation this film got I definitely keep an eye on it.

    THE MUMMY (2017):

Seeing the 5.9 on imdb, I thought "no way this film can be THAT bad. The trailer looked SO GOOD.". But - sure enough - it is THAT BAD. It was supposed to be so much scarier than the '99 film. It wasn't. The actions, and more importantly, the reactions, we're so SLOOOOWWWWWW. It was like "something bad is happening so let me just stand here with a blank stare for 5 seconds."

The "Dark Universe" concept was a great idea, but Kurtzman dropped the ball - BIG TIME!

    I'll give it a very generous 3/10.

I love the classic universal monster films and the albatross that is the way they treat them now sickens me.

I honestly question why they put him in charge of directing a tentpole like that in the first place. Writing it would be one thing - even though his franchise work tends to leave a lot to be desired - but he only had an indie drama to his name beforehand, and a box office flop at that.

They really should have taken the "small but personal" route of making these things actual horror movies in a shared world as opposed to an MCU knockoff. I'm still interested in catching it while it's in theaters on the cheap side to see if it really is this dumb or if I might find anything redeeming about it.

Same reason WB/DC made Zack Snyder their tentpole director. They have no clue how to do it.
WB didn't get their first big success until they got their first truly good director. Patty Jenkins. (who Marvel had originally picked for Thor 2)

Snyder was primary writer for WW. It was his character design. And it was all part of his plan for the DCEU. So Jenkins gets the largest share of credit. But Snyder had a big part in it also. If he's going to get ripped for his other works, he also has to be given credit for his successes.

But the success in the movie is from Jenkins' direction. The story is the weakest part. And when it gets too Snyder-y the movie really stumbles.
Jenkins makes a lot of bad worn out tropes work.

His plan for the DCEU has been a failure. MoS is divisive. BVS is bad. And SS is bad too.
    Wonder Woman is solid.

Snyder's biggest issue has always been story telling so leaning on him to tell a story that isn't already completely thought out is a mistake.

Writing is the most important foundation of any movie. As they say in Deadpool - "the Real Heroes of this Film". I've never, ever heard of a director overcoming bad writing. IMO that is impossible. Bad writing is the reason Sony and Fox have been failing so miserably lately. Perfect example: Independence Day 2 had very good direction. but he couldn't overcome that abysmal script/screenplay. On the flipside, Lost in Space(1998) is the perfect example of how bad directing can ruin good writing.

I count myself among the majority who considers WW to be an extremely well-written film.

Friendly reminder that Christopher Nolan, and not the studio, picked Zack Snyder for Man of Steel. They wanted Nolan to be their architect but from the sound of things he really wasn't interested and he left Snyder and the others in a crummy situation that Geoff Johns and Jon Berg seem to be in the process of fixing. Everything I've heard regarding Snyder suggests that the people involved love working with him and that he's one of the nicest directors in Hollywood, which is a far cry from the mental image of "edgy Michael Bay but a bigger jerk off-camera" that everyone seems to hold to him. If that's the case, I think that going forward, then I think he should stick to producing a bunch of these projects instead of directing them.

    I don't question Snyder's personality or that he's a good person.
I just don't think he's a good story teller. I think he's fairly bad at it.
He can make a beautiful movie, but there's always something lacking in the storytelling department.

Yes Nolan nominated him for MOS but WB made the call for him to do BVS, JL and JL2.
I will stand by my belief that he needs to be a cinematographer not a director.

So, I see that the Han Solo movie news is eclipsing the less than flattering reviews for Transformers: The Last Knight which have landed this morning

That's probably a blessing for Paramount. From what I can tell it sounds like Transformers 5 is a trainwreck of the highest caliber.

Really bums me out that we Star Wars fans are dealing with something as incredibly concerning as this. :(

I am of the belief that Star Wars is largely fail-proof.
Even if one movie is sub-par, it will make big money and spurn more movies.

So far, they have made 2 billion dollar films that were good yet flawed.

If Han Solo falters big time, then we should be concerned, but it will still in all likelihood make good money and keep the good SW name going.

So far the only movie that I've seen this year is The Lego Batman Movie, but I'll watch GOTG Vol. 2 eventually. (After I watch the first one and get caught up on all the other MCU movies...)

As for movies from June and forward:
    1. The Last Jedi
    2. The Lego Ninjago Movie
    3. Spider Man Homecoming
    4. Cars 3
    5. Coco
    6. Thor Ragnarok

Same here the critical consensus aside but there are people supporting it that have a good taste:

Can't wait for Justice League, Blade Runner 2049, War for the Planet of the Apes, Murder on the Orient Express, Annabelle Creation, Spider-Man....

Oh, and in the first place, a little independent film call The Last Jedi.

    You're right to. It's fantastic.

I really think Hollywood needs to commit to making more movies like this instead of tentpoles that don't have the audience necessary to warrant their massive budgets.
