Pop music is getting more and more repetitive to a point where the chorus is only 3 - 7 words long now.

To the music industry, it doesn't matter what the lyrics are as long it has a catchy sound and it's easy to dance to then it'll sell.

And the baselines are so bloody similar and repetitive, I don't know how people enjoy it.

    Pretty much. Mindblowingly illogical.

How is it that 6 people write such basic repetitive lyrics,

Not a huge fan of Queen but I like that song and "Somebody to Love"

The bands I listen to they all write their own music.

Luckily there are still some pop artists out there that do write their own music.

If I was an artist, I know I would write my own music, I am a writer after all (not professionally but as a hobby)

You have written your own music, haven't you? (I remember you mentioning that to me at some point.)

Yeah out of all the pop bands, the band I know of that I think is Robert cool is The Backstreet Boys who have been writing their own music for the last 5-6 or so years...I prefer a lot of indie (sometimes folk) music and there's this piano bar I like to go to in Hollywood every so often where obscure small bands play and it's freakin awesome (also a great date spot).

Signing off with blasting this before bedtime.

I was out for a walk yesterday, and as I was crossing the bridge over the harbor the wind was blowing in my face and I was singing this as loud as the wind's roar and not giving a blast if anyone could hear me.

Honestly, the reason that pop music largely sucks is because the average pop music listener isn't interested in the quality of what they are listening to. Its just something catchy to listen to on the radio while they are doing something else. If someone is a serious music fan, chances are that they rarely listen to the radio by choice when there are so many better ways to find music these days. Even serious pop music fans probably don't like a lot of what is on the radio, there are a million other sources to find even pop music these days.

Basically, the bland pop music that dominates the charts is the product of most music listeners who never really bother to look beyond the surface because they are just casual fans and therefore are unable to see why most of it sucks. This post isn't to say that being a casual music listener is a bad thing if you aren't really that into music, but to explain why the crap almost always dominates the charts. Its the same principle behind why Michael Bay's Transformers films keep making money even though its hard to find anyone who admits to liking them, the casual filmgoers don't care about all the reasons why the films suck, they just want to go to the movies to be entertained by big explosions, dumb jokes and babes, whereas serious film fans tend to hate that film series.

Additionally, it must be stated, bland crappy music has always dominated the charts, seriously, look back at any music year's top 100 or any other list like that and see how many of those songs that you actually recognize. Sure, you'll see the occasional recognizable names like Elton John, Michael Jackson or Madonna, but the majority of what you see will be artists you have never even heard of because they were just bland forgettable pop artists of their time.

I need to do that more often. Maybe on this weekend's hike I'll start singing Sweating Bullets for no reason.

For all of those spinning the classics, the only true classic i keep coming back time after time.... The Who

(Actually i prefer "My Generation" but Patti Smith version is so much better than the original)

And talking about the classic and their covers, never forget this one,

"(I'm Not Your) Steppin Stone" cover from The Monkees by one of the greatest bands of all times "Minor Threat"

(personally i consider this song one of the best Punk Rock songs of all time)

    Nice chord work!!

My favorite Bowie cover is Red Hot Chili Peppers version of "Sufragette City" in a very Punk way

Yeah that guitarist is my favorite on YouTube. He also does Duel of Fates, the Imperial March, and a Star Wars Medley as well as many other themes to movies, TV shows, anime, and video games.
