    There’s a recent rumor going around that Luke Skywalker kills himself though self immolation, or setting himself on fire. If this is how Luke goes out, I think I might cry. Not just because I’ll be sad to see him go, but also because it will be the worst possible exit for one of my childhood heroes and favorite pop culture icons. How will you all feel if this turns out to be the case? Are there some things that are just too dark for Star Wars?

    I don't see it happening. I can see Luke being broken and needing to heal mentally and spiritually, but if they have the one who walked to the edge of the dark side and chose death rather than to succumb to it end up killing himself, they are gonna have a nerd riot the likes of which will make any animosity that EA gets look like romantic flirtation.

    I am thinking there is next to no chance that happens. I would say you have a better chance of the theater you are watching TLJ in being struck by a meteor than that scenario playing out so I wouldnt worry to much about that.

    On Crait, Leia sends out a last distress signal. If nobody picks it up, they're doomed. The First Order breaks into the base. But the signal is heard - by Luke Skywalker. Leia and Rey had a bracelet each allowing them to track each other's positions across the galaxy, and Rey left it behind on Ach-Tho. Luke picks up the signal and learns through the bracelet thingamagog where Leia is. He finally snaps out of his "Jedi-must-end/I'm-a-grouch" modus and goes, possibly with Chewie, R2, a load of Porgs, and the Falcon, to Crait. Here he makes a heroic sacrifice, allowing the heroes - Finn, Poe, possibly Rey after having escaped the Supremacy - to escape with Chewie in the Falcon to fly off into Episode IX.

    I put it in spoiler tags but it's obviously just speculation (but based on the explosive wealth of material cropping up today)

    I thought this thread was about the Men In Black-style Porg Party in the Falcon cockpit. That's probably my biggest nightmare.

    I agree with that possiblity. The rumors that Luke dies are to strong to be entirely discarded, jet In this case I expect him to die like Obi-Wan in a heroic sacrifice.

    He's already confirmed that he'll be in E9, even with the Colin Trevorrow draft (which was to prominently feature the Skywalker Twins together). They haven't changed the film following Carrie Fisher's death, so it can be presumed he is still needed.

    Plus, they already did the "shock everyone by killing the legacy character" twist in TFA. To do it in this one would be expected, and therefore boring.

    If that's the case, and I've been very open with the changes to Luke, I'd hate that. Luke goes up in flames. Merry Christmas.

    After seeing TFA I had speculated that Luke would die in 8, and Leia would die in 9 but I really think I was wrong. I think I was saddened by Han's death and thought that they would do away with the legacy characters in this trilogy and continue the next trilogy with Rey, Finn, Poe or Kylo but things have changed, I doubt Luke will die in 8. He's the only legacy character left...:(

    When was Excalibur released in the 80's? I remember everyone I knew said if you wanted to watch a good sword film thats the film to watch! But now we have GOT...haha

    There is no Rey in the next trilogy.

    Episode 9 is her last appearance. Maybe she sacrifices herself in episode 9.

    Or maybe she ends up the villain

    Agreed, I think it'd be kinda lazy to kill off Luke or Leia at the end of this film. I really hate the idea- it just seems to formulaic.
