    I've tried to post this information a couple times on the Star Wars Leaks subreddit, but I'm getting caught in their spam filter. I'm posting this here, in a forum that I only occasionally visit, because I ultimately just want this info to be available to the community.

    My friend auditioned for Episode VII back in 2014. I believe he was in the running for the role that was eventually revealed as Finn. He made it through the first couple rounds of casting, though ultimately didn't get the part. I initially expected that the studio would use some sort of temporary script or stock lines, but recent leaks and official announcements have made me change my mind. He mentioned to me back in Spring of 2014 that his character crashed on a desert planet, and also mentioned (by name) somebody named "Maaz Kanada" (sic). Of course, both of those ended up carrying over into the final film.

    I've asked my friend to try harder to remember any details, and I will update when he responds to my texts.

    Here is what I can remember from the last time we spoke about it:

    • He crash landed on the desert planet, wandered for several days.

    • He had to read lines opposite a female character (who we can probably assume is Rey).

    • The girl seemed to be pretty knowledgeable. He said she seemed to be street smart and have local knowledge, and he got the impression that she is already kind of a badass.

    • My friend who auditioned for the role isn't black, so I highly doubt that Finn is the son of Lando or nephew of Mace Window or brother of Willrow Hood or something, unless the studio decided to make that change after casting.
    Again, I'll keep this updated as I learn more.

    Also, if I'm breaking any forum rules or anything, please let me know.

    Sam Witwer said he auditioned for Finn, so it is true that he was not a black character from the beginning.

    It's well known that several white actors auditioned for Finn, well obviously not as well known as I thought.

    Interesting information none the less though

    So here's an update.

    I was able to exchange a couple of texts with my friend. He's definitey not a big enough fan to keep up with the leaks, and he doesn't want to have much of the movie spoiled, so I would've felt bad running in with loaded questions like about her acting like she knew how to use to force or anything. Here is what I did get.

    -"Maaz Kanada" (as he originally spelled it) was a man in the audition script.

    -My friend was having a conversation with the girl, telling her that he needed to see "Maaz."

    -From how my friend remembers the lines, it seemed like this "Maaz" was his best hope of getting off the planet.

    -The girl knew of Maaz Kanada and feared him.

    My personal guess, given what my friend told me and what we know, is that Maz Kanata was the original name for whatever gangster or whoever runs the show locally on Jakku (Unkar?).

    Maz supposedly had the code name "rose" in the script, right? Why then would they use her real name in audtion sides where there's a ton more potential for it to leak? They wouldn't. Because of that I'm 99.8 sure this is a troll.

    Like I said in my last post, I think they might have switched some names around at some point, because everything my friend had to say about Maz Kanata, even down to the gender, doesn't seem to be in line with what we know about Luptia's character.

    I also get how you think I'm a troll, since I can't really offer anything in the way of proof (other than time stamped texts with my friend from 2014, but those could be easily faked). Ultimately, though, if I was a troll, wouldn't I pick something a little more interesting to go on about for my fifteen minutes of Internet fame?

    I understand that but what I am saying is that they wouldn't use ANY real names in open casting calls like this. Doesn't matter if a different character had the maz name or not... It wouldn't be used. It would be "alien 1" or "gangster 1" or whatever other generic name they felt like. They wouldn't use the maz name then for any character. Exactly for the reason that you're here posting about it. They'd use generic names to cover leaks. Not use a real name.

    I wouldn't read too much into this. The audition clips in the "Empire of Dreams" documentary for Episode IV show that the script used at audition is significantly different to the final version e.g. character and planet names changed, plot changes and so on. Given that the OP's report doesn't include anything not revealed by official sources, they must have opted to use parts of the script that weren't going to ruin the movie if leaks got out.

    What is interesting to me is that Finn is looking for Maz - how would he know to do that? is it something Poe tells him to do when they are together?

    Well, you just answered your own question. They were using fake script to do the auditions. Finn may very well be not looking for Maz in the film. And I agree with
    garbonzonia. They were already using Rachel and Thomas as fake names in the casting calls. Why use Maz, even for a different character?

    this is the early test script for the auditions

    Rachel labors to bear Thomas’s weight as they inch their way down a deserted road, blood dripping from his leg.

    He’s trying to stomach an apple

    THOMAS (kidding): Can’t you go any faster?

    RACHEL: Shut up and eat your apple.

    He enjoyed that, but every step is sheer agony on the leg.

    RACHEL: There’s a barn a little farther up the road…

    A big barn, dark and damp. Rachel covers the floor with hay, then lays out her sleeping bag. Thomas looks through her backpack for anything he can use as a bandage.

    RACHEL: You need rest.

    She lowers him down – which puts her face mere inches from his open wound. She cringes without meaning to.

    THOMAS: Sorry. I know it’s -

    RACHEL: It’s fine. I’m just not a big fan of blood.

    THOMAS: You know, for such a tough girl, you’re kind of squeamish.

    RACHEL: Your fever’s still up. And we have to get some more food in you.

    THOMAS: I’m not hungry.

    RACHEL: It wasn’t a request.

    She sits down next to him and takes out a loaf of bread.

    THOMAS: Rachel, thanks for coming to get me.

    RACHEL: Family has to stick together, right?

    She starts to rise. He grabs her hand, dead serious.

    THOMAS: Listen, if I don’t make it -

    RACHEL: Sssshh.

    THOMAS: But if I don’t…

    Before he can finish, she drops down next to him and looks him dead in the eye.

    RACHEL: You’re not going to die. I forbid it. Okay?

    THOMAS: Okay.

    RACHEL: Get some sleep.

    THOMAS: What about you?

    RACHEL: I will. In a bit.

    I always thought that the script for Thomas and Rachel was based off of a scene in the Hunger Games with Katniss and Peeta. So @pjvader makes sense. As to @tearsofmalakili it's within the realm of possibility that his friend got the working script to audition. Early concept art according to MSW actually has two species of Maz's alien race working side by side in the same scene and we know that JJ and Larry were literally still changing the script as production happened. However I find it very unlikely with a movie of this magnitude that someone simply auditioning for a role would be given an actual page from the movie with real names. I don't think that happens with major movies very often and thus am calling BS.
