My friend auditioned for the Force Awakens, got a callback, and read some of the script in 2014.

It makes sense that they wouldn't use a real script for the first few rounds of casting, but as far as I'm aware, my friend made it reasonably far in the callback process. I don't think he read in front of JJ or anything like that, but he was from a more select group than the countless thousands that initially auditioned, so it doesn't surprise me that he read at least an early version of what seems like a relatively inconsequential scene.

Like I said, i'd be a kind of a troll if I came in here with no proof and an "insider info" story as underwhelming as this.

Personally, I'm just hoping that the scene my friend described, or something similar, is in the final film come December. I imagine I'd feel a little bit vindicated, and I suppose that it's the only way I can conclusively prove I'm not bantha poodooing you fine folks here at the Cantina

If this is all true, my guess would be that they had "Maz Kanata" as a placeholder name for that character, but they decided to use it for the character they had been calling "Rose" up to that point instead. A placeholder names becomes a real one, basically.

You seem really nice so I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt. But can you tell us any more about the casting process itself and what kind of work your friend does? I know that they wanted virtually unknown actors, but did he read with Daisy at any point?

Thanks, dude. Really appreciate the faith.

My buddy isn't a celebrity or anything, I'll tell you that. I don't think he has much on his resume beyond extra stuff and theater, really.

I'm pretty sure he didn't through that massive open audition process they had. I think it was through a more straight forward route, like a casting agency being contacted directly by the studio or something of that ilk.

I don't think he ever read with Daisy, either. Just other young actresses in a similar stage of the casting process.

Gotta say, though it would've been strange having such an old friend of mine be the lead in a franchise that means so much to me, it would've been an (obviously) incredible career launcher for him.

Then again, it wouldn't have hurt to know a guy on the inside, huh?

I remember this. They let fans audition, too. I was one of them. Still got my audition tape somewhere, but boy, was that dialogue absolutely terrible.

    I didn't know that.

He was great as Crashdown in BSG.
