Wait Kylo is really the best of the best in the Knights of Ren....the hits keep coming if this whiny failure is the best they got then my god Luke must suck balls as a teacher if they lost to an even weaker Kylo Ren years ago. If Rey can do this I expect Luke to be able to murder them all.

The redditor seems to have deleted their post, for whatever reason. Does anyone have a copy of it? Really curious to see what new stuff is in the novel that wasn't in the film.

Do we know at what point the Jedi purge took place? Rey is 19. Kylo can't be older than 30. She looks at least 3 and at most 6 when dropped on Jakku. That would mean kylo would have been 14-17 at the time she is left there...

I wonder if we'll ever see the Poe/Rey meeting scene on the Bluray or whatever, or what I'm assuming are now 'alternate' scenes featuring Maz Kanata on D'Qar.

Yeah, I heard it as "Master".

I thought that too! :) Lol I wish they'd specified if "that voice" was male or female.
Like the way this is framed made me wonder if on some subconscious level Rey knows who the voice belongs to, even if the rest of her mind hasn't caught on, so when she's following and calling out to it, out pops Kylo Ren from behind a tree. I know it might be weird if Kylo/Ben is saying "sweetheart" but remember that was one of Han's favorite phrases, so one wonders if his son might have had a habit of saying it at some point. Lol *shrugs*

Right, I never thought Rey could have really been left on Jakku by caring parents, adopted or otherwise, moreso after we got to see a glimpse of it, how small and desperate Rey was and how she was being manhandled by Unkar, almost like she'd been sold into indentured servitude. I think this is more likely to have been a decision made by a stupid, desperate teenage boy who was in over his head.
If we're going to get any kinds of dramatic revelations in VIII similar to ESB, something to basically throw a wrench into the Kylo vs Rey dynamic, this theory would probably be a pretty good one.

I had to step away from it for a couple hours but I'm diving back in for the night. Enjoying the novel as much as the film. Very happy they brought Alan Dean Foster on for this.

Can you check in the novel if Snoke says to Kylo 'last of the Knights of Ren' or 'Master of the Knights of Ren' when he says he has not faced such a test?. Maybe even get a picture of it?. Thanks.

Anyone know if ADF is doing the Episode VIII novelization? Did they let him read a draft of the EVIII script to at least get an idea of where things are headed? Or was that only the story Lucasfilm group giving pointers on the TFA novel. Else there could be a future where the novel contradicts the upcoming films in various ways.

I don't imagine the Episode VIII script was even finished by the time ADF was writing this one. Wasn't it just recently finished by Rian Johnson? I guess they could have given him the same notes/outline that they gave to Rian regarding where they thought the story should go.

Agreed. I assume they would have him write it again but I wouldn't guess they would have him start until they had a rough idea of what sequence scenes occur in the film. Also wouldn't be surprised if they had a different author for each novelization. James Luceno, Claudia Gray, or Greg Rucka would be my picks. Hell, bring back James Kahn, too. He said he'd love to write in the SW universe again.

Watched the film for the seconmd time after seeing the original post questioning about 'master' or 'last'.

To my ears, it was definitely MASTER. And I was listening out specifically at that point.

I should point out that although the novelization is canon the movie is the final version. Apperantly there are things that differentiate from the movie because the novel was written before the movie was finalized. So, we're supposed to take the movie's words over the novel when we see differences.

I found it, it says "master."

I thought it might be interesting to give people an idea of the difference between the novelization and the film, so here's the dialogue from the same scene in each:

HUX: Supreme Leader, I take full responsibil—
SNOKE: General! Our strategy must now change.
HUX: The weapon, it is ready. I believe the time has come to use it. We shall destroy the government that supports the Resistance: The Republic. Without their friends to protect them, the Resistance will be vulnerable, and we will stop them before they reach Skywalker.
    SNOKE: You. Oversee preparations.
    HUX: Yes, Supreme Leader.
SNOKE: There has been an awakening. Have you felt it?
    KYLO REN: Yes.
SNOKE: There's something more. The droid we seek is aboard the Millennium Falcon, in the hands of your father, Han Solo.
KYLO REN: He means nothing to me.
SNOKE: Even you, master of the Knights of Ren, have never faced such a test.
KYLO REN: By the grace of your training, I will not be seduced.
SNOKE: We shall see. We shall see.

HUX: Supreme Leader, I take full responsibility for th—
SNOKE: Your apologies are not a strategy, General. We are here now. It is what happens next that matters.
HUX: I do have a proposition. The weapon. We have it. It is ready. I believe the time has come to use it.”
    SNOKE: Against?
HUX: The Republic. Or what its fractious proponents choose to call the Republic. Their center of government, its entire system. In the chaos that will follow, the Resistance will have no choice but to investigate an attack of such devastating scale. They will throw all their resources into trying to discover its source. So they have no choice but to investigate fully, and in so doing…
    SNOKE: Reveal themselves
HUX: And if they don’t…we’ve destroyed them.
SNOKE: Yes. Extreme. Audacious. I agree that the time for such measures has come. Go. Oversee the necessary preparations.
    HUX: Yes, Supreme Leader.
SNOKE: I have never had a student with such promise—before you.
REN: It is your teachings that make me strong, Supreme Leader.
SNOKE: It is far more than that. It is where you are from. What you are made of. The dark side—and the light. The finest sculptor cannot fashion a masterpiece from poor materials. He must have something pure, something strong, something unbreakable, with which to work. I have—you.
SNOKE: Kylo Ren, I watched the Galactic Empire rise, and then fall. The gullible prattle on about the triumph of truth and justice, of individualism and free will. As if such things were solid and real instead of simple subjective judgments. The historians have it all wrong. It was neither poor strategy nor arrogance that brought down the Empire. You know too well what did.
    REM: Sentiment.
SNOKE: Yes. Such a simple thing. Such a foolish error of judgment. A momentary lapse in an otherwise exemplary life. Had Lord Vader not succumbed to emotion at the crucial moment—had the father killed the son—the Empire would have prevailed. And there would be no threat of Skywalker’s return today.
REN: I am immune to the light. By the grace of your training, I will not be seduced.
SNOKE: Your self-belief is commendable, Kylo Ren, but do not let it blind you. No one knows the limits of his own power until it has been tested to the utmost, as yours has not been. That day may yet come. There has been an awakening in the Force. Have you felt it?
    REN: Yes.
SNOKE: The elements align, Kylo Ren. You alone are caught in the winds of the storm. Your bond is not just to Vader, but to Skywalker himself. Leia…
REN: There is no need for concern. Together we will destroy the Resistance—and the last Jedi.
SNOKE: Perhaps. It has come to our notice that the droid we seek is aboard the Millennium Falcon, once again in the hands of your father, Han Solo. Even you, master of the Knights of Ren, have never faced such a test.
REN: It does not matter. He means nothing to me. My allegiance is with you. No one will stand in our way.
SNOKE: We shall see. We shall see.

The novelization has so much more!
I think of special mention, is the revealing comment Snoke makes about watching the rise and fall of the Galactic Empire... this may start limiting theories about the character. The idea that he came from beyond known space looks less likely.

Also... right after this scene in the novel, is the scene where Poe wakes up after the crash. He is discovered by a "blarina" scavenger by the name of "Naka." If you remember the MSW leaks, "Naka" was the name of the character who found the lightsaber after it crashed from space...

That's true... but I do feel that it provides some valuable insights into things.

I took the "that voice" stuff in the novel to be Rey hearing her mother's voice, as she leaves her on Jakku. Rather than having her just hear the voice while in the forest setting, they made it more explicit in the movie and actually showed Rey being left on Jakku with Plutt instread.

I don't think any of this stuff implies Kylo Ren knows Rey.
To me it simply suggests Kylo and Snoke are anticipating someone or something emerging - something is causing a disturbance in the Force - and that something just happens to be Rey.
That is why Ren is disappointed to find she is just a scavenger; and why - as she begins to show her power - his doubts are set aside: "It is you".

I figured. It sounded like the aerial battle at the end was vastly simplified in order to put the focus on the emotional crux of the narrative (which was definitely the right call to make). There's no EMP blast from Hux, either. There was also supposed to be a speeder bike chase on Starkiller Base to make the sequence longer, but it also got cut.
