It's complicated to have a Kenobi standalone film with Maul as the villain. I mean, not everyone watches the cartoons, read the books or comics. We have to assume that the general public doesn't know much about the expanded story and only knows the films.
So they would have to explain a lot of things, like how the heck Maul survived and how he found out Kenobi whereabouts. This could make the film boring and maybe contradict other canon materials and that's something Lucasfilm doesn't want to do.

As much as I love Ewan's Obi-Wan I'm close to agreeing with you.. I hate to say it can't be done, but it would be very difficult to pull off without really screwing up the continuity of the movies we know and love even more than it has already has.. It's time to get some damn good writers in on a Knights of the Old Republic trilogy! It would be a relief to everyone that they can just leave the current time line used in the movies alone and start fresh.

I think you're on the right track, but it could really cause some more continuity issues (which have already been bent quite a bit for the prequels) if it's set much later than a few years after ROTS. Old hermit Ben Kenobi would appear pretty senile and it would take the weight off of the great Alec Guinness's line when he's shocked of Luke calling him Obi-Wan..

The problem with a star wars western, any western in general, is that westerns are never received well at least not since its heyday like 50 or so years ago...then again, it's star wars
    :D.

I personally can't wait to find out the third Star Wars spinoff. I hope it's a Kenobi film, but I will be happy with whatever Lucasfilm and Disney give us. I will still line up at the theater waiting for the film in total anticipation with everyone on opening night.

If they make an Obi Wan story, what kind of timeline do you guys think they would set it? +3 years after ROTS? +10 years? i guess they cannot go any further than 10+ years as it would be too close to Alec Guiness's Obi Wan, and i assume Ewan Mcgregor would be used, maybe with some grey hair?

Also, can someone tell me what the timeline of the Star Wars Rebels is? is it pretty close to ANH? if thats the case i guess having a movie featuring the rematch with Darth Maul would be out of the window as again, he would be Alec Guinness by then. cff924c40074e78a845189f14c39403e.jpg

I think it would be between that period, from 3 to maybe 15 years max after ROTS. There have been so far 3 issues from the Journal of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars comics: I reckon these stories could be revisited, and we could have a better perspective of the life of Obi-Wan via flashbacks: maybe getting a younger actor - a child - to play Obi-Wan when he was taken into Jedi training, and maybe a glimpse of Yoda and Qui-Gon (CGI deageing for Liam Neeson lol). We can also have flashbacks of him and Duchess Satine - if possible, to be played by Cate Blanchett - and I would not mind if they recreate her death from TCW in a live-action movie. This way we could get to know more about Kenobi from being at the center stage, not just a supporting character.

Rebels Season 1: Started 5 years before ANH (Ezra and thus Luke and Leia were 14, we learn Ezra becomes 15 during the season).
Rebels Season 2: About 3-4 years before ANH (Princess Leia appears as aide of Senator Bail Organa, not yet a Senator herself - which we know she becomes at the age of 16).
Rebels Season 3: 2 years before ANH.

That's an absolute possibility. My only concern from seeing this Rebels episode and the Obi-Wan hints is that a lot of canon material (Rebel's and the 'Star Wars' Comics) is using and/or hinting at Obi-Wan either directly or indirectly in context. This leaves me to wonder if there's even enough material left for an Obi-Wan Film - especially when it comes to Maul. Don't get me wrong; I think the Lucasfilm Story Group could definitely come up with something amazing. I'm just a little surprised with the amount of Obi-Wan material we're getting at this stage.

For example; it would be crazy to have Obi-Wan film that had a Maul vs. Kenobi battle in it as most people who'd see the film would never have seen The Clone Wars or Rebels. Normal film-goers would think:

Casual Film Goer (Majority): "ummmmm.... wasn't this guy killed in that film in 1999?"

Star Wars Fan (Minority): "well ummm... yes he was but it turned out that he survived. You should watch the Clone Wars and Rebel's TV Shows.. that way you'll be up to date!"

Naaaaaaah. I don't see it happening unfortunately.

@PrincessLeiaCB3 @Bligh wow thanks for your in depth and informative responses! So i think we can all agree any mention of Darth Maul in a potential Obi Wan movie would be out of the question with what we know from Rebels, and i agree with Bligh that the casual film goer will be extremely confused.

I imagine a story where we see Obi Wan watching Luke from a distance, and a potential explanation of why Obi Wan/Yoda did not train him from a young age ( as personally i find it a bit of a plothole why Obi Wan was not training him from day one)

Also for us to see how Obi Wan learned to become one with the force, so communication with Qui Gon and Yoda, and how Qui Gon felt about Anakin's actions after he pushed Yoda and Obi Wan to train him so much.

Did Obi Wan ever leave the planet in 20+ years? he did seem to know exactly where to find a pilot at Mos Eisley who would take him to another system.

What knowledge did he have of the Rebellion? and the Empire? how did he discover Anakin was in fact alive? and how to recognise him fully armoured in ANH?

or did he have more of an involvement with things happening on Tatooine? obi_wan_desert_nomad_tatooine_by_ashleyclapperton-d4wh2u1.png

If they ever do a Kenobi film. My inner Clone Wars fanboy wants them to sneak in a force back scene of Ewan wearing the Clone Wars armor.

I think an Obi Wan Kenobi anthology film would be the best thing Disney has done since purchasing Lucasfilm in 2012. Not only is this a story millions of fans want to be seen on film, but there are several reasons why this is not just fans' pipe-dream:

    1) Ewan McGregor's closeness with Lucasfilm. He willingly contributed his voice to TFA, and has openly expressed interest in reprising his role. Kenobi has noticeably aged since Episode III, so he will fit the Alec Guiness role that much better.

    2) Darth Maul's return. Why bring back a guy killed by Kenobi unless there isn't going to be a final showdown between the two characters? At the end of a previous Rebels episode last week, Maul appeared to be seeking knowledge of Kenobi and was giddy with job when discovering that he was alive. This is a showdown too big for a mere cartoon. It seems to point towards a live action film.

    3) Ray Park's interest in reprising his role as Darth Maul.

Now, if I were to make a bet right now on what the third anthology film will be, I will say that (unfortunately) it will be the Boba Fett film. But let's hope that in the future we will see this Kenobi film.

Ewan Mcgregor is 100% up for it:

"Whilst conceding that nobody has approached him about an Obi-Wan film, he told Premiere “I’ve always thought there was a story to tell between my last one and Alec Guinness’ first one” and it's a story he'd be up for bringing to the screen
    .
“It would be fun to film that story now I’m older,” McEwan explained, “I’d be the right age. I’m forty-five, Alec Guinness was what, sixty? I could do two of them (laughs)!”

On the future of the franchise, he concluded “I hope that they’re going to explore different genres under the Star Wars banner. And one of those could be an Obi-Wan Kenobi feature film. Or two! The Obi-Wan Kenobi Story Part 1 and Part 2!”

It didn’t take much to nudge McGregor to talk Star Wars, a universe he clearly loves, says Premiere, though he does find it annoying that every time he’s asked about returning to the franchise “it seems as though I’m begging for work!”

Can anyone tell me if this is still considered Canon? and if so is it worth reading?

Agree. All we see in the comics and then in ANH is that Uncle Owen has not allowed Luke to be trained by Obi-Wan and we see this confrontation in one of the comics where Owen blames Kenobi for what happened to Anakin.

My guess is that he had certain contact with the exterior, maybe just right before ANH. I want to think he was contacted before by Bail Organa or even Ahsoka. Hopefully we will learn more about it in Rebels Season 3. I would not mind having Kanan meeting again with Obi-Wan.

    Yes, please!!!

Hope not. I've always thought Boba Fett is so overrated.

And it does not have to be necessarily a confrontation pre-ANH from what we have seen in Rebels Season 3. It could be maybe a flashback from TCW - as I mentioned before, I would not mind they reprising that from the animated series into live-action - when Maul kills Duchess Satine.

It's not canon, but it's close enough to the take over of the new canon that if they go this way, I am sure elements would be used. Meaning, that a lot of authors and people on the Lucasfilm committees were involved when this novel was created.

Agree. I mean, when they did the Great Wipe they did in order to give creative freedom for the ST but at one point I guess they will rescue all the elements that still could make sense without contradicting the current canon.

If only I had Force powers like the real Obi Wan I would give the Disney execs some jedi mind tricks to get this movie made. More than anything else, an Obi Wan Kenobi will tie the trilogies together and make EVERYONE happy. Not to mention:

    1) the final showdown between Darth Maul and Obi Wan Kenobi on the sands of Tatooine, something fans wanted to see since the Vanity Fair promo pic in 1999.

    2) Obi Wan Kenobi conversing with Obi Wan, learning how to spiritually become a Force Ghost. They can include Liam Neeson's voice and everything (read the novel Kenobi for more details on how these conversations can be brought to life.)

    3) Obi Wan guarding over young Luke, only to be chased out of town by Owen, Clieg, and Beru. This will add tremendous weight to the dialogue in Episode IV when Owen describes Obi Wan as a crazy old man.

    4) Ewan McGregor is itching and ready to go. All he has to do is sign the contract, put on his jedi robes, and we're off!
