When Phasma was being discussed in the news before the release of TFA, there was a lot of hype. The talk was mostly about how she will have a significant role, and how she will be a role model for girls. Phasma was featured fairly prominently on most promotional material for TFA, and was being portrayed by a fairly well-established actress(the awesome Gwendoline Christie), so it would make sense that she would have an impactful role in the film.

Well, when TFA was released, Phasma's role was revealed, which unfortunately was not exactly what audiences had been promised. This character that had been built up as a force to be reckoned with only really affects the plot in one way: lowering the shield on Starkiller Base after getting easily captured. One could argue that she serves as an antagonist to Finn, but if so, she is overshadowed by Kylo Ren and General Hux. For most of her scenes, she seems to stand in the background and deliver a line or two of exposition - things that are not really impactful or inspiring of a character. Many fans noticed this, and added to the argument that maybe Phasma should been the one to duel Finn on Takodana. Clearly, what we were told about Phasma and what Phasma was were two different things.

Fortunately, when Phasma was being discussed in the news about TLJ, it seemed that the filmmakers had listened to the dissent of the critics. Many were put at ease when the trailers for TLJ had shown Finn and Phasma clearly having a duel at some point in the film. Also, the book Star Wars: Phasma by Delilah S. Dawson really helped build the character up again as a formidable force. It seemed as if TFA was a trial run for the character, and now in TLJ the audience would see Phasma kick some serious butt.

Well, when TLJ was released, we did get to see Phasma in action again - only to be disposed of easily mere minutes after her introduction. To give credit where credit is due, Phasma and Finn's duel was visually interesting and helped progress the Finn-Phasma conflict. My faith was almost restored in Phasma, but then 2 things happened; 1., The duel lasted approximately 30 seconds and 2., She was incapacitated in one hit by Finn, followed by her falling off the platform with her fate the same as it was in TFA: unknown, but presumably dead. This was the character that was being built up? This was the character that would be inspiring and impactful? Other than her duel, she has literally a few lines of exposition dialogue, but no more. Again, there was an outcry from the fans, which has led me to create this thread to ask this question: what is the point of Phasma?

All of her actions and dialogue could be given to General Hux, Kylo Ren, or even some random First Order officer or stormtrooper (like the guard in Rey's interrogation room), and the outcomes of what unfold in the story would all be the same. Even in TLJ, Finn, Rose, and BB-8 manage to escape to the Resistance despite the efforts of Phasma. If Finn needs an antagonist, let it be Hux or Kylo. Objectively, Finn has more reason to dislike Kylo because of what he did to Rey.

I believe my overall complaint is that is seems that the point of Phasma is to sell toys and look cool. That and the fact that in marketing Phasma is built up as this powerful character (played also by a great actress), and what fans got in the films was clearly not that.

So if anyone can make an argument for Phasma's inclusion in the films, I would love to hear it.

tldr;Phasma has no impact on the plot, despite being built up in marketing as being impactful

You know that actually has been bugging me. I like the actress but all I keep thinking is they are using Phasma as a tribute to Boba Fett (stay with me here). Fans all agree Boba never died (he crawled out of the pit supposedly in the comics which were never written off like the rest of the EU in the books and later comics after EP 6). So I'm thinking she was originally created as a we didn't forget you type tribute. Its liek when the woman who shot the armor had it ricochet off just like all Mandalorian armor is supposed to do with most blaster fire) Then again all TFA was is a Tribute to Ep4 and so why not make EP8 a tribute to such things. Ok thats my ten cents

Maybe she can attain cult status like Admiral Ackbar, with all of approx 20 seconds of screentime in the OT, becomes one of the most beloved characters for uttering a 3 word line.

Ackbar had a lot more than 20 seconds of screentime, and he was crucial in helping take down the Death Star II. But yes, he is famous for his classic line. Unfortunately, I can't really think of anything Phasma will be famous for doing or saying.

OK he had approximately 2.5 minutes of screentime. Total. The same as Sio Bibble, Admiral Piett, or Taun We.

I love Ackbar, don't get me wrong. But the fact that he is a cool fish dude wearing white slacks and shoes has more to his apparent popularity than the depth of his character.

Yeah they really messed up with Phasma. I don't know why they talk about her as if she's one of the greatest characters in the ST when clearly she's a (wannabe) Boba Fett. My best guess is that they wanted a female version of Boba Fett (fan service+diversity), but couldn't say just how useless she really is because...well, she's a woman. These days all female characters have to be described as holy role models, as if their very existence is some great accomplishment for cinematography. Otherwise someone gets offended and has a panic attack.
Just earlier today I came across an article praising Holdo for something like..."shutting down mansplaining" I think. What was the "logic" there you ask? Well, apparently people who criticize Holdo for staying quiet about her plan (when it was in everyone's best interest to disclose it) do so because she's a woman. It has nothing to do with the fact that she displayed a complete disregard for the legitimate complaints of people who were worried about losing their lives. No, apparently it's all because we want women to answer to men. And Holdo's ridiculous attitude towards the people whom she was supposed to guide and reassure is apparently a positive thing, a middle finger to the "patriarchy". Let it be known that when women are in charge, you can't complain. Can't ask questions, can't ask for guidance, just shut up and do as asked. And if you're afraid for your life...Oh well, it doesn't matter. Only a sexist pig would expect a woman to do her job properly. So what if she did nothing to win your trust and loyalty? She's a woman, she can do no wrong.
So of course Phasma is a "great character".

    Fascinating.

I agree. I guess my complaint is that they bring Ackbar back in TFA and TLJ, and they give him even less to do and say. Especially in TLJ, where I believe he only appears in the background.

I could go on, but my complaints about the use of Ackbar are perhaps best saved for a more "Ackbar-centric" thread.

To sell merchandise probably. Her "character" is among the few valid criticisms against TLJ.
RJ brought her back for two (!) dramatical entrances and a lackluster demise (?).
We can blame the promotion for overhyping her before TFA, but can not for TLJ...

Plus, Jango at least had a point and part in the story... Phasma is only there to look cool.

Rian called her the Kenny of SW in a recent podcast. So there is a chance she'll be back for Episode IX.

That would be dumb if she was back. If she was though she better have a least a slightly important role in the story. I mean Kenny is a main character in south park and actually is interesting. (I know im getting off topic here) but Kenny is awesome just saying.

Well, Phasma was written into The Force Awakens later on, and I believe they based her look on concept art for Kylo Ren. She also serves as an antagonist to Finn. That being said, I think it was understandable that she had a smaller role in that film, given her late addition to the story. However, with The Last Jedi, I was truly disappointed that they didn't do more for the character after hyping her up to be somewhat important.

Yes, I understand The Last Jedi is a long film and didn't necessarily have time for it, but increasing her role could've drastically improved Finn and Rose's storyline as opposed to the lackluster Canto Bight one we got. I really enjoyed The Last Jedi, but as a big fan of Gwendoline Christie and Captain Phasma, it was truly disappointing to see that the character was given the shaft yet again.

I know Rian isn't ruling her out of being in Episode IX, so I would love for her to reappear as long as she has some significance. If Kylo Ren is redeemed or is betrayed by the First Order (as we know there is tension between him and Hux), it might allow for Phasma to pop up again and become a more prominent villain.

I don't know. I think the idea of the character is great and Gwendoline is wonderful in the role, but they have got to stop giving her character the shaft if she's going to be a part of the next film. She has so much potential and I'm sick of it being wasted the way it was with Boba Fett.

For as many accolades as LFL got for making a female the face of Star Wars, it’s bizarre they made their first big screen female villain be a complete nothing character. Her job is to literally stand around, look pretty, and do whatever the male characters tell her to. Strange choice. Where’s that SJW/feminist agenda I’ve been hearing so much about?

Phasma is the foil to Finn's character, and is there to represent the First Order as his primary antagonist. She fills the physical role of the First Order's ideology; physically menacing (in both appearance and ability), loyal to the bone, unquestioning attitude... that being said, the idea behind her character is spot on but the execution is flawed.

In order for Finn and Phasma to fully realize this conflict, they need to meet in one-on-one combat, right? That's almost impossible given Phasma's position and the whole idea of Stormtroopers; for the most part, they aren't designed (er-- programmed?) for hand to hand combat. Though we are starting to see more "melee" specialists in their ranks, generally speaking Stormtroopers are supposed to be the cavalry. The "stay in your rank and file, fire on the enemy until either you're gone or they're gone." Of course it doesn't always happen this way, some battles require different tactics of course, like Takodana.

Here, I think Phasma should have been the one to confront Finn, instead of TR-8R. There is the history between them established at the beginning of TFA, and this continues that rivalry. Also it would add to Finn's character; immediately after he has decided to run, he is forced to face his fears. Although he doesn't win, he does come out of alive, thanks to Solo (who, instead of ending Phasma with the souped-up bowcaster, just disables her to some extent). As for the ending on Starkiller Base, I didn't have much problem with that. Personally I liked the whole trash compactor bit. Maybe she did give in and let the shields down too easily, but hey. What would you do if you were being held at gun-point and wookiee-point?

As for TLJ Phasma, I would have preferred to see her "win" this round. Maybe she captures / kills Rose, right before Finn and Phasma are forced to abandon their fight and flee the crumbling hangar? (And no, before you go there, I love the character of Rose. I'm not looking for ways to get rid of her.) This would motivate Finn in entirely new ways to seek vengeance. And set up a final showdown between them in IX. Mostly, I just wish they didn't really leave the door open for another "surprise" return. Personally, I think she is gone, but at the same time it wouldn't surprise me to see her in IX.

    Wearing blaster-proof armor?
Can you imagine the negative feedback if a female character were killed off or imperiled just to serve as motivation for the male character? In this day and age? Not very likely.

Well, that’s a pretty impossible claim to substantiate, yeah? I’m responding to your premise. If I were a highly trained soldier, covered in impervious armor, faced with a senior citizen, a janitor and a carpet monster - I don’t know if complying without any resistance would be my response. That’s just me though.
It’s called ‘getting fridged’. It’s a very old and very maligned fiction writing trope. If RJ killed a new female character in his story just to service a more significant male character, there would absolutely be tremendous backlash. That’s not a ‘fake’ issue. DIS/LFL would not want to kick that hornet’s nest when they’re trying to broaden this franchise’s appeal.
