    Yes. Absolutely.

Stormtroopers raze a village to the ground. If they're a joke or incompetent, the emotional stakes with Finn won't make sense. If Finn is a wet behind-the-ears recruit who defects, he'll need a foil (literary term for someone who contrasts that newbie status). Seasoned veterans (likely Phasma) will demonstrate why he wants to leave the First Order.

Dude that is some interesting speculation for sure , god job!. I don't think we will see a full on revolution within the order but í wouldn't bet against seeing some more defectors in the future. Especially in the new canon being built around the movies. Firing the Array is a proper d**K move from the top shelf that might open a lot of eyes within the lower ranks.

(mimicking the voice of Darth Vader) There is NO plot hole!

The stormtroopers stationed on the first Death Star were either rookies or personnel unfit for combat duty deliberately put there (no one expected to really see some action inside the Death Star) or weak units hand picked by Darth Vader to ensure the Princess could escape and lead them to the hidden Rebel base, that was part of his plan!

In contrast we have the Tantive IV boarding party, the Hoth Snowtroopers and - yes - an entire legion of the Emperor's best soldiers on the forest moon. The stormtroopers killed the Rebel "grunts" but were apparently aware that both Leia and Han were VIP rebels that needed to be taken alive. I claim that the stormtrooper wounding Leia did this on purpose - I'd call this precision shooting.

P.S. I correct myself: The troops on the first Death Star were probably pros, too, but under explicit orders to shoot but to miss. A rookie could have scored a "lucky" shot but that was a risk somebody like Vader would probably have excluded.

The First Order TIEs are probably piloted by retired Stormtroopers from the OT era. And besides, blasting running heroes is nothing like bulls-eyeing womprats in your T-16 back home. (Sorry folks, couldn't resist).

It was the writing/plot sequences that made the OT storUnclepers aim bad. The scenes on the Death Star during ANH there were no redshirt rebels to kill. There was no chance that Luke, Han or Leia are going out by getting blasted by TK421 ;). Opening scene in ANH on Leias ship, Lukes Aunt and Unkle, Hoth Attack in ESB provide plenty of redshirts. Star Wars needs a mid level character development. Characters who can be killed but have some development and purpose.

I think the Flametroopers will do well, we know troopers are good at burning stuff.

Have you played Battlefront? They really nail the useless front line soldier bit. You are complete cannon fodder to the hero characters.

After the Stormtrooper landed and shot up the place. Captain Phasma noticed that they managed to not hit one single target so she ordered the Flametrooper in hopes of causing some damage. *smile*

Of course! That's will be the core of TFA: The Empire/First Order has learned from past mistakes.... and big time!

What "past mistakes"? Please indicate OT scenes where stormtrooper accuracy was questionable and where we can be really certain that they had not been under orders to deliberately miss.

Okay, that's the only one I recall where the stereotype might be applicable.

Now what's Vader's objective in Bespin? To capture Luke Skywalker alive so he can freeze and bring him to the Emperor.

I believe it's fair to assume that all stormtroopers were given specific and explicit orders not to injure or kill Skywalker. In the scene where Luke stumbles across Leia and Chewie being escorted away the stormtroopers only shoot to keep him away.

The part where it gets obfuscated, admittedly, is when Lando activates his own escape plan, which must have come somewhat as a surprise to the Imperials in charge. Were the stormtroopers ordered "shoot to kill" or "capture Baron Calrissian, the Princess and the Wookiee"?
